1 DEPARTMENT / PROGRAM Health Studies Program, Faculty of Human and Social Sciences Honours BASc Health Studies TYPE OF CHANGE Other (describe below) Change to program name and requirements. MOTION On the recommendation of the Senate Academic Planning Committee, that Senate approve changes to the Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science Health Studies program, including a change in the name of the program to Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science in Public Health, and changes to required courses. APPROVED AT: Health Studies Program Committee February 18 th, 2015 FHSS Curriculum Committee February 23, 2015 FHSS Divisional Council March 9, 2015 Senate Academic Planning Committee March 23, 2015 EFFECTIVE DATE: September 1, 2015 DESCRIPTION OF THE CHANGE: Provide a brief description of the proposed curriculum change. The proposed changes include: (1) A change to the name of the degree program, from the current Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science in Health Studies, to Honours Bachelor of Arts and Science in Public Health. 1
2 (2) Changes to the courses required for completion of the degree. RATIONALE FOR CHANGE: Explain the rationale for the major modification. The BASc in Health Studies is intended to provide students with a broad understanding of health and health care, with an emphasis on both the social and physical determinants of health. The content of the degree program as it currently exists is already compatible with the foci of public health as a discipline, as opposed to the more generic moniker studies. The modifications proposed herein fill the gaps necessary in order to refer to the degree as explicitly emphasizing public health. The proposed name change provides greater clarity with respect to the focus and content of the program, which should assist in attracting those students who are most suited to the program s strengths. Coupled with modifications to the degree requirements, this change has the potential to further differentiate the degree from, and eliminate potential brand confusion with the Health Sciences program. The new name should provide greater clarity to prospective students with respect to the content of the program, aid in student recruitment efforts, and offer graduating students a degree that is better understood by prospective employers. ALIGNMENT WITH UNIVERSITY ACADEMIC PLAN: Comment briefly on how the proposed change aligns with the Academic Plan. A BASc in Public Health fits exceptionally well with the core principles and domains articulated in Wilfrid Laurier University s Academic Plan Specifically, the program is intended to allow students an opportunity develop expertise related to the determinants health, gain knowledge of the unique needs of groups at risk within the broader population, cultivate an understanding of the multifaceted health and social services sector, and acquire research skills necessary to identify, understand and address a complex of health- and health care-related problems. As such, this program falls under the core principles of civic engagement, integration, and sustainability; and under the domains of governance and health and well-being. As well, the Public Health program is consistent with WLU s strategic mandate agreement, given its focus on health and well-being. IMPACT ON PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES: Comment on how the proposed change impacts the learning outcomes of the program. These changes do not substantively impact upon the learning outcomes of the program. 2
3 IMPACT ON RESOURCES: Comment on the impact of this change on the human, physical, and financial resources of the program. These changes do not substantively impact upon the resources required for the program. Four new courses have been developed for this iteration of the program, two of which will be offered on a cyclical basis. Two of the new required courses will also be available to students in the BA Community Health, which will assist in maintaining acceptable levels of enrolment in those courses. The addition of these courses is also offset by a number of recent course deletions made by the host unit.
