Hungarian Heritage Foundation of the San Francisco Bay Area Our Mission To promote, share and educate the public about Hungarian culture, language and art; by building on the cooperative and creative energy of the SF Bay Area Hungarian-American community. 1
Our Roots Jövö Alap ( Future Fund ) The Jövö Alap committee was established in 1992 after the sale of the San Francisco Hungarian Center It s purpose is to manage proceeds (and settle debts) resulting from the sale and to secure another location if possible. Local non-profit Hungarian organizations selected representatives to participate on the committee. In 2009, the Jövö Alap committee members voted to form a non-profit organization: The Hungarian Heritage Foundation of the San Francisco Bay Area. 2
Partnership and Cooperation Why HHF? Over the years, representatives from the various organizations built cooperative partnerships through their participation on the Jövö Alap committee. The committee discussed the future of the local Hungarian- American community and the possibility of another center. The committee decided non-partisanship and an all-inclusive organization was needed to: Promote continued participation in Hungarian community Determine the level of support for a new Hungarian Center (logistical, moral, physical, financial, and social) 3
What makes HHF unique? An All-Inclusive Focus We are non-denominational We provide an organization not aligned to a particular church, sport, or socio-demographic group We do not limit our audience to Hungarians We seek to increase awareness of our culture among not only Hungarians, but among Americans and Hungarian descendants that have lost touch with their roots We encourage partnership and cooperation among local Hungarian organizations and promote local talents 4
Hungarian Heritage Festival Last year s festival boasted attendance of over 1700 people Expanding our audience through our flagship event This year we expect to host over 2300 people We are doubling the number of performances, expanding the footprint of the festival, extending our hours, and adding content All vendors, performers and exhibitors enthusiastically agreed to return this year and to increase their participation. We received very positive feedback from the Hungarian community and the public at large. 5
Promoting and sharing our culture Hungarian Heritage Festival Increases awareness of our culture and Hungarians in the Bay Area Shares our culture, language, art, music and cuisine with the general public Expands fundraising opportunities for non profit organizations outside the local Hungarian American community Markets our local Hungarian proprietors and organizations and expands their audiences through our annual Eszterlanc membership increased 30% Performers boast of their participation on their own websites 6
Our Future Will there be a Hungarian Center? We would like to purchase or lease a building to be shared by all partner organizations A center takes moral and social support The local community (both Hungarian and non Hungarian) would have to support it right place, right time, right features A center takes financial support Initial capital expense building cost minimally $1MM Sustenance minimally $20K per year Festival; community cooperation; legacy endowments 7
In the Meantime We plan to: Continue our support of the national holiday commemorations Support cultural events across the organizations logistically and financially Spearhead the Hungarian Heritage Festival to build a sustainable model Keep a pulse on the community s support for a center and look for an opportune time to purchase or lease a location Encourage donations to build a legacy 8
