3 ASSYRIAN SCHOOLS ENROLMENT PROCEDURE At the commencement of Term 2 of each school year the enrolment period is declared open. During this time all those parents who seek to enrol their child / children in year 7 are advised to obtain an enrolment package from our school office. Please complete the application form and return it with COPIES of the relevant documents to the office before the end of the enrolment period, Friday 26 th June Documents to include with Enrolment Form: Passport Photo of Student Copy of Passport if not born in Australia Copy of Baptism Certificate Copy of Immunisation Certificate Copy of any Parenting Court Order (if applicable) Who is eligible for enrolment? In order to meet the demand of our community s need for enrolment, The Assyrian Schools board has developed an Enrolment policy which our schools follow. According to this policy, acceptance of children will depend on a number of criteria which have to be met by the applicants. These criteria are called an Enrolment Priority List. The students who will receive priority for enrolment are: (a) Siblings of students presently enrolled in any Assyrian school whose parents/guardians have shown a commitment to meet their financial responsibilities to the school. (b) Children from families who are financial members of the Holy Apostolic Catholic Assyrian Church of the East. (c) Children from families affiliated with other Assyrian Churches. (d) Children from Christian families. (e) Children from non-christian families. At the end of the Enrolment period, the enrolment committee will examine all applications and advise the Principal of the number of students eligible for enrolment according to our policy. The Principal will write to all successful applicants to invite them to an interview with the members of the enrolment committee. All successful enrolments for St Narsai Assyrian Christian College will be invited to a special orientation evening where more information and students handbooks will be given to parents. Enrolments of Children with Special Needs Parents applying for enrolment are strongly advised to provide full disclosure of any learning difficulties that their child may exhibit, including physical and intellectual disabilities. This is important for us to know so that we may be able to implement special programs to assist your child. If the school cannot cater for the needs of your child we may be able to advise you and provide you with better options. Parents, please note that the Enrolment Panel s decision is final and no discussion will be entered into.
4 INTRODUCTION Every nation is recognised by its history, customs, literature and intellect. Similarly, every Church is recognised by its Christian doctrines. This places an immense responsibility upon every generation to strive in preserving their culture, heritage and religious heritage. Failure to do so may result in the deterioration of that culture s ancestral and historical faith. Among its descendants its language will die. Such a generation will be guilty of great negligence for breaking the long chain of its natural history and would be severely judged by its succeeding generations. Thus, we the Assyrians in general and the Assyrian Church of the East in particular, accept the responsibility to shoulder and safeguard our priceless heritage. We will endeavour to work together to nurture and preserve a generation rich in Christian faith and national consciousness, so that those who follow us will have pride in their diligent forefathers, history and faith of their beloved nation. This way, we will be safeguarding our language, culture, heritage, literature and faith from dispersion and dissolution. Our Vision Lighting the Way Preserving our Faith, Culture and Heritage Our schools are dedicated to educational excellence, encouraging students to reach their potential in a nurturing environment so as to become productive Australian citizens, reflecting the Christian faith of the Assyrian Church of the East, Assyrian language and culture. In our schools we endeavor to: Our Mission Provide a continuum of education rooted in a rich tradition of faith, family and community values. Commitment to academic excellence cultivated alongside a Christian faith-filled environment. Offer a broad and diverse curriculum endorsed by the NSW Board of Studies, based on educational programs incorporating productive and coordinated planning. Continuously evaluate the quality of our courses to ensure their excellence is maintained, and enables holistic student development in spiritual, intellectual, physical and social aspects of being, reflecting the diverse needs of a life-long learning process.
5 Assyrian Schools Prospectus Provide a complete academic program in an environment that integrates learning, cultural heritage and religious instruction, Gospel values, and spiritual formation into all aspects of a comprehensive and challenging curriculum and the practice of faith in Jesus Christ lived out in the daily experience of our dedicated staff and students. Provide excellent education, directing students towards their fullest potential, fostering in each student a sense of unique identity and tangible self-esteem; hence creating a better future for themselves and the society they constitute. Foster generations of students, academically and morally who can become responsible citizens and leaders of the future Direct students toward their fullest potential creating a better future. Provide the best educational experience possible for our students in well-resources schools. Provide an effective learning environment resourced by dedicated teachers and staff who value and espouse the Christian faith of the Assyrian Church of the East ethos. Maintain a safe, supportive, caring and disciplined environment which balances firmness and fairness We Value Education is a lifelong process that fosters the worth of the individual; it is a process involving a partnership of students, home, school, Church and community. The Assyrian Schools have an effective learning environment that fosters, in each student, a sense of unique value, selfesteem and importance to society. Commitment We value educational excellence, and sustenance of this commitment in our dealings and relationships with students, teachers and parents, the Church and the community. Integrity We value honesty, trust and fairness Respect We value a safe and cooperative work environment where individuals care for each other and grow through open communication. Excellence We value working together to develop and continuously improve processes that support the creative pursuit of new ideas in everything that we do. CURRICULUM
6 Qualified staff, who are eligible to join the NSW Institute of Teachers, will teach the NSW Board of Studies curriculum in all Key Learning Areas. In addition, students will be educated in the Assyrian language, Assyrian culture and Christian faith and values of the Assyrian Church of the East. BUS TRAVEL M.B.T Transport Pty Ltd run a private bus service to transport students to and from school at a separate cost to school fees. If you wish to use this service, please contact the proprietors: Angela or Oshana GRIEVANCES Families are asked to raise all grievances at school level first. This will give those most closely involved an opportunity to address any issues in the light of a detailed awareness of the everyday issues faced at the centre and a detailed knowledge of the family and child. Families are asked to remain aware that at any stage of a grievance procedure, they may ask any other person to act as an agent, support, advisor or intermediary on their behalf. If appropriate, and if family members feel comfortable doing so, the family may approach the staff member involved and if needed set a time where the matter can be discussed appropriately. Grievances at this level will normally be resolved by discussion and clarification of the needs or wishes of the family or by clarification by the staff member of the centre procedures or polices. If the family member does not wish to speak with the particular staff-member involved, then they may approach another staff-member with whom they do feel comfortable. With the family's consent, this staff member may then approach the original person and explain the grievance. The Principal or person in charge will be notified about the grievance prior to approaching the other member of staff. The family may raise their grievance with the Principal, (if the previous step does not produce a satisfactory outcome to the parties involved or if the person concerned feels it is not appropriate). The Principal will research the grievance/situation and work towards reaching a satisfactory outcome for all parties involved. Again grievances at this level will normally be resolved by discussion and clarification of the needs or wishes of the family or by clarification by the Principal of the School s procedures or polices. Resolution may also involve the development of new policy or procedures if the matter or point of view raised has not previously arisen or been considered at the School. Families are entitled to appeal any decision made by the Principal at any previous step. Such appeal will be made, in writing, to the Board. The Board or its nominee will determine an appropriate mechanism for dealing with any appeal.
