3 International Programme in Addiction Studies (IPAS) Collaboration between: Virginia Commonwealth University King s College London University of Adelaide Launched in 2008 with faculty from: Pharmacology, psychology, public health, addiction science Leads to M.S. in Addiction Studies

4 Curriculum Term 1 (August to October): Addiction Policy Biological Bases of Addiction Term 2 (November to February): Treatment of Addiction: Psychosocial Interventions Research Methodology in Addictions Term 3 (February to May): Public Health Issues and Approaches to Addiction Treatment of Addiction: Pharmacotherapies Term 4 (May to August): Treatment of Addiction: Critical Issues Research Project in Addictions

5 Proposed work 1. Needs assessment of students and faculty 2. Curriculum mapping 3. Design / implement information literacy modules 4. Create virtual library 5. Develop specific information literacy competencies for addiction studies 6. Memorandum of understanding for coordinated library services

6 Funding VCU Global Education Office Quest Global Impact Awards Virtual Global Classroom Award Proposals for academic units to develop new and innovative programming in support of internationalization goals: Recruit and retain highly qualified students from other countries Provide high impact learning experiences for students in a global environment Contribute to research, scholarship, creative expression, and clinical practice in a global context

7 Milestones - Summer 2014 Summarize VCU Libraries involvement with IPAS *Conducted student / faculty needs assessment Begin IPAS library design Project planning meeting at VCU

8 Summer 2014: Needs Assessment ~90% accessing resources through VCU journals and databases tied for most used resources Still, students wanted more help using print and electronic books, databases, and journals 46% said they would feel somewhat confident finding academic literature , telephone, and video tutorials were the preffered methods of delivery

10 Fall / Winter : Curriculum Mapping Examples of library-related assignments: Biological Basis of Addiction - essay to demonstrate skills in searching, appraising informaiton, [and] analyzing the information. Addiction Policy - position paper on a recent piece of international legislation providing evidence in support of position Psychosocial Interventions essay on intervention [demonstraiting ability] to carry out a scientific literature review. Research Methods research project protocol planning assignment including a literature search that demonstrate understanding and ability to use index terms, truncation and wildcards, boolean operators, and limits

11 Fall / Winter : Info Lit Modules Using Blackboard learning modules system New and old content Based on faculty and student feedback So far include: library orientation, citing / referencing, grey literature

16 Lessons Learned program level Creating introductory module to establish baseline solves problems on multiple levels: Familiarizes students with each librarian Familiarizes librarians with variations in students knowledge, skills Frontloads content so students know where to find it when they need it Foreshadows expectations for searching the literature

17 Lessons Learned virtual library Good usage, but content needs to be continually refined Moving, removing, reconfiguring pages based on use / input Administrative structure prevents students from accessing all available resources from the start Earlier system registration and credentials May depend on program administrator
