For data on national, indigenous, and religious appeals I gathered and preformed a content analysis on 15,000 campaign posters and hundreds of local newspaper articles from elections in Indonesia from During two years of field research I attended campaign events, did over 100 interviews, and gathered data on thousands of candidates. Findings show that Indonesia s move towards a more candidate-centric electoral system has resulted in an increased politicization ethnicity during elections. In addition, candidate s decision to appeal to their own ethnic groups or reach out to other ethnic groups is largely determined by their party ideology, the size of ethnic groups in their district, and the degree to which the electoral rules are candidate-centric or party-centric. 1
