11 SURREY CAMPUS FACULTY OF COMMUNITY & HEALTH STUDIES ND Ave. Surrey, BC Canada V3W 2M8 TO: FROM: Senate Standing Committee on Curriculum Jean Nicolson-Church, Associate Dean, CAHS Carolyn Robertson, Chair, CAHS Standing Committee on Curriculum CC: Tru Freeman, Dean, CAHS DATE: September 27, 2011 SUBJECT: Name change for Bachelor of Science in Nursing (second degree) program, formerly the Bachelor of Nursing program. The following name change for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (second degree) program, formerly known as the Bachelor of Nursing program, was approved by the CAHS Faculty Council s Standing Committee on Curriculum on September 20 th, Proposed name of program: Bachelor of Science in Nursing Former name of program: Bachelor of Nursing Background: The Full Program Proposal for the Bachelor of Nursing program was approved by Senate March 29 th, The Program also received recognition from the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia in February 2010, pending Ministry approval. The Ministries of Health and Advanced Education have reviewed the program and recommend that the name be changed to Bachelor of Science in Nursing. This is consistent with all other Nursing degrees in British Columbia. Rationale: There is a concern that a nursing degree with a different name will result in confusion for employers, other health professionals, and the public. This name change will comply with the recommendations of the Ministries of Health and Advanced Education.
12 Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) second degree program The BSN (second degree) program at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU) is being offered in recognition of the current severe worldwide nursing shortage. This BSN program will help to alleviate this demand by graduating approximately 40 students each year from an accelerated second degree nursing program. Students will complete their nursing education and be in the nursing workforce 18 months earlier than graduates from the current BSN program. The BSN second degree program is an alternative to the traditional four-year entry level nursing program. It serves a distinct group of mature, successful learners and recognizes their prior learning. The number of accelerated second degree nursing programs has increased dramatically in North America in recent years. Graduates of these programs are widely accepted and are becoming valued members of the nursing workforce (American Association of Colleges of Nursing as cited in Penprase and Koczara, 2009). The goal of the BSN second degree program is to educate and prepare students to be independent, caring, creative, reflective, and competent professional nurses who will apply their life experiences and critical thinking skills in basic and advanced nursing roles. Graduates will meet the standards and competencies required by the College of Registered Nurses of British Columbia (CRNBC) for entry into the nursing profession and will be able to effectively address population health care needs and priorities. The impact of the BSN second degree program on the university and the need for additional resources to support this program has been assessed. Although some expansion will be needed, the necessary physical resources are largely in place. Approved changes to the curriculum of the current BSN program will facilitate clinical placements for the required residency consolidation. There is wide-spread stakeholder support for the program both inside
13 and outside Kwantlen. The program was reviewed by the Education Program Review Committee of CRNBC in November 2009 and received tentative CRNBC recognition until Anticipated implementation of the BSN second degree program is September, Key features of the BSN second degree are: 1. The BSN second degree program will be delivered in a blended or hybrid curriculum model, taking advantage of the well-developed critical thinking skills of a baccalaureate graduate. Most theory components of the program are delivered online with a twelve week lab and practice residency consolidation in Semester Students may be able to complete the other practice experiences in their own communities as appropriate and available. 3. The structure of this program will provide access to people throughout British Columbia and will allow them to learn and work in their own communities. 4. There will be an advanced entry point for graduates of the Kwantlen Bachelor of Psychiatric Nursing program. 5. Portfolio-based assessment and program planning where the mapping of coursework reflects student individuality in terms of abilities, interests, needs, and prior learning will be used throughout the program. 6. Professional and faculty mentorship processes for students will be implemented to provide orientation, social support, and networking partnerships with clinicians and researchers. 7. Praxis, a process of critically reflecting on, examining, and improving nursing practice, is a central focus of the proposed program.
14 Program Information The BSN second degree program is designed to provide highly effective, efficient, and meaningful learning experiences for students. Program learning experiences satisfy the requirements of academic rigour, meet divergent learner needs, capitalize on the skills and abilities of this specific group of learners, and promote nursing practice relevance. KPU will admit forty students to the BSN second degree program each year in September. The students who are admitted will have completed a university degree.
