1 1 Eas tern Kentucky Unive rsity Department of Counseling and Educational Psychology SYLLABUS for COU 849: Addiction Disorders Counseling 3 CREDIT HOURS COURSE DESCRIPTION: The course will cover addictive disorders and behaviors with a foc us on the biopsychosocial model, 12 step model, and assessments, prevention and interventions for adolescent and adult populations. A. Texts: Required: Doweiko, Harold E. (2007). Concepts of Chemical Addiction, 7th Edition. Brooks/Cole, Cengage Learning. B. Student Learning Outcomes: 1. Understand the history, philosophy and trends in addiction counseling. 2. Understand ethical and legal considerations specifically related to the practice of addiction counseling. 3. Knows the roles, functions and settings of addiction counselors as well as the relationship be tween add iction counselors and o ther mental health professionals. 4. Knows professional organizations, competencies, preparation standards and state credentials that are relevant to the practice of addiction counseling. 5. Understands a variety of models and theories of addiction related to substance use and other addictions. 6. Knows the behavioral, psychological, physical health, and social effects of psychoactive subs tances on the user and s igni ficant others. 7. Demonstrates the ability to apply and adhere to ethical and legal standards in addiction counseling. 8. Knows the principles of addiction intervention, consultation, education, and outreach. 9. Know the philosophies, practices, policies, and outcomes of models of treatment, recovery, relapse prevention, a nd continuing c are for add iction and o ther substancerelated problems.
2 2 10. Recognize the importance of family, social networks, and community systems in the treatment and recovery process. 11. Understand the role of spirituality in the addiction recovery process. 12. Know a variety of helping strategies for reducing the negative effects of substance use, abuse, and dependence. 13. Understand the principles and philosophies of addiction-related self-help p rograms. C. COURSE GOAL: Students preparing to work as addiction counselors will demonstrate the professional knowledge and skills/practices necessary to work in a wide range of addiction counseling, treatment and prevention programs as well as within a mental health counseling context. D. EVALUATION METHODS: Attendance and Participation Article Review Group Presentation Reaction Papers Wellness Plan Diagnosis and Treatment Plan Self-Help Group Attendance Paper Examinations 200 points Total points possible 900 Grades will be determined on a percentage basis based on number of points earned divided by 900. A % B % C % D % F 59 0 % E. STUDENT PROGRESS: You will be provided with written information on your progress at midterm via Blackboard. You may at any time during the semester inquire about your current grade. F. ATTENDANCE POLICY: Attendance is required. Poor attendance may adversely affect your grade. In case of emergency absence, please phone as soon as possible. If more than 5 class hours are missed, the student may be dropped from the class. Each class meeting This being a 5 hour class for each meeting date, missing one class may result in significant lower grade. Students are responsible for all work during absences.

Attendance and Participation: Due to the nature and structure of this class, attendance, punctuality, participation, and discussion are essential to the learning process. Your absence prevents full participation in this learning process, even if you do your best to find out what was presented in a class you missed. Therefore, attendance will be a part of your grade in this course. 2. Article Review: You are required to read one article from the Journal of Addictions & Offender Counseling (articles must be research based, either quantitative or
4 4 qualitative) and written within the past 5 years. Your review should be four-five pages and inc lude name of the jour nal (vol, issue #, etc) author, a br ief review of the article, describe why you are interested in the topic, share any experience you may have in the area, of the topic, and how the article did or did not confirm and/or expa nd your knowledge on the top ic, and your perceived limitations of the study. 50 points 3. Group Presentation: Students will be required to participate in a group presentation reflecting current issues in Addictions. Topics will be discussed during the first class meeting. Topics may include, but are not limited to: Opiate treatment approaches, Methamphetamine use, family problems related to addictions, Intervention programs that work, legalization and medical issues related to addiction, or other related topic approved by the instructor. 4. Reaction Papers: Stude nts will write 4 two page reaction papers to 4 different chapters in the book. The chapters are of your choosing, but must be spread out through the book. (25 each) 5. Wellness Plan: Students will develop and implement a wellness plan or 12 step plan to be used in their daily lives. Plan should be a 4-5 page paper developing a personal wellness plan addressing the following components: (100 po ints) a. Physical wellness.physical activity, weight loss goals b. Emotional/mental wellness addressing unresolved emotional issues from childhood or victimization, methods of identifying areas of insecurity and high risk behaviors. c. Social/relationship wellness methods of improving social relationships with significant others, siblings, parents or friends d. Personal Spiritual growth/development developing a sense of spirituality to create purpose in life. e. Personal/self care putting it all together with specific goals and objectives including methods to achieve each component. 6. Addiction Diagnosis and Treatment Plan: Dur ing the course of the term, students will watch two movies, and create a multiaxial diagnosis of one of the characters in the movie. In addition, students provide a treatment plan. (50 each) 7. Self-Help Group Attendance Paper: Each student will attend two open meetings of either AA, NA, Al-Anon or ot her instructor app roved group self help meeting. Each student will submit a 4 page paper written in narrative form describing their reactions to the meeting and their beliefs concerning the relevance of self-help groups in benefitting clients with addiction issues. (50 each) 8. Examinations: There will be two exams that will be taken on Blackboard. 200 points (100 each)
