5 Student Voices Kurtis Hanlon (From the U.S.A) International Master s Program in Japanese Humanities Graduate School of Humanities Kyushu University truly offers a unique opportunity to study in Japan. Fukuoka is a vibrant area full of historical significance and cosmopolitan amenities. As a student of the humanities, my prior studies had centered on the Kyoto and Nara area, but one of the greatest joys I have had is discovering all the culture this area has to offer. The campus and libraries are wonderful resources that allow students to deepen their knowledge about their chosen field, and the ability to take classes in both English and Japanese is perfect for students with a future in or connected to Japan. Campus Locations Ekenechukwu Okafor (From the Federal Republic of Nigeria) International Doctoral Program in Mechanical Engineering Graduate School of Engineering My over four years of graduate school experience at Kyushu University have been fulfilling. The well-equipped laboratories with advanced research facilities, the international students-friendly university system and campus environment, and the location of the university in one of the world s most livable cities make Kyushu University a choice institution for oversea graduate studies. I m impressed with the curriculum of the international graduate program taught entirely in English, the highly experienced and supportive teaching staff, and the international students support system of the university. The large international student community with their extracurricular activities has also contributed in making my life here quite blissful. Junjun Ni (From China) International Doctoral Program in Dental Science Graduate School of Dental Sciences The quiet atmosphere, strict professors and kind staffs of Hospital Campus give me a great impression. During the past two years, I enjoyed studying and living in this place. Moreover, the advanced science and technology are deeply attracting me. In every discussion and seminar, I am always learning a lot from my professors and laboratory friends. They guide me, inspire me and enrich my experience in both research and personal life. The greatest changes are I m more interested in my research and becoming loving sashimi. I just feel proud to be a student of Kyushu University. Hope to see you here. Kyushu University has five campuses in all, with most in Fukuoka City. Students study on different campuses according to each major. Most students in science courses will study on the Ito Campus, where the latest equipment and facilities are available. The Program is designed to provide students with the skills required to complete high-level research in law. A core part of the Program is the Annual Law Conference. Initiated in 2006 and organized by LL.D. students, its reputation for thoughtfully addressing cutting edge legal issues has grown, and it will continue to serve as a valuable educational opportunity for our students. IEBL Program (LL.M. in International Economic and Business Law) In the fall of 1994, the Graduate School of Law established Japan s first Master s Program taught entirely in English, the LL.M. in International Economic and Business Law. Drawing upon the support of a Faculty with particular strengths in the fields of economic and business law, the IEBL Program is designed to provide international and Japanese students with the ability to confront the challenges of international economic affairs and commercial transactions. BiP (Bilingual Master s Program in Laws LL.M.) Launched in 2009, the BiP offers students the unique opportunity of graduate level legal study in a bilingual environment at a Japanese law faculty. The Program seeks to overcome one of the major obstacles to graduate legal education in Japan, namely that of the language, by providing students with the option of taking classes and writing a thesis in English or Japanese. As such, the Program facilitates rapid improvement in Japanese ability whilst allowing students to engage in classroom study and supervised research across a wide range of legal subjects. YLP (Young Leaders' Program LL.M.) [email protected] For inquiries concerning Student Offices [email protected] (International Programs) : [email protected] The Young Leaders' Program was established in 2001 by the Japanese Government in the fields of Public Administration, Business Administration, and Law. In recognition of the success of the graduate programs, Kyushu University was entrusted with the responsibility of offering the Law YLP. The IFS was created with the dual aims of offering a mechanism for intellectual exploration and education to open up new scientific frontiers, and helping to restructure and integrate scientific knowledge. The IFS seeks to broaden intellectual horizons by exploring and integrating advanced and specialized scientific knowledge, as well as by producing highly skilled experts. The IFS consists of three Departments: (1) Kansei Science, which studies human sensitivity (kansei) from the standpoint of users, the main beneficiaries of knowledge; (2) Automotive Science (AMS), which explores automobile technologies and the kinds of automotive societies to come in the near future; and (3) Library Science, which seeks to provide solutions to such emerging issues as how to manage information and knowledge properly, and how to secure access to information. Programs Offered in English International Master s Program in Automotive Science International Doctoral Program in Automotive Science Developing comfortable, safe cars that are also energy and resource efficient is a goal of great urgency for the car industry. Instead of just manufacturing them, however, characteristics such as their relationship with people, society, and environment must also be considered. We also need to make use of knowledge and insights from both the humanities and social sciences, and integrate all these aspects to create a new body of knowledge. The AMS is the first knowledge hub designed for this purpose in Japan, and there is nothing like it anywhere else in the world. Through the integration of knowledge, the AMS seeks to create a new automotive society and educate highly capable experts who are able to innovatively resolve a variety of issues involving automobiles and frontier technologies. The trip from Tokyo to Fukuoka takes around 90 minutes by plane. With its mild climate, Fukuoka is said to be one of Asia s most pleasant cities to live. In fact, the Newsweek magazine s international edition selected Fukuoka as one of the World s 10 Hottest Cities, along with Las Vegas (USA) and Munich (Germany) in While the streets of Tenjin, the commercial center of the city, are lined with modern buildings and department stores, students can also enjoy natural beauty of the nearby seaside and mountains. All these sites are located in the suburbs, and numerous cultural and historical buildings such as temples and shrines are also readily accessible. Fukuoka serves as a gateway to Asia, both geographically and historically, and it has a dynamic, cosmopolitan atmosphere. There are abundant information sources for visitors from overseas, including free English publications, FM radio stations broadcast in various languages, street signs in four languages, and shops selling foods from abroad. International students have few difficulties living in Fukuoka. The city is welcoming to many cultures, as evidenced by the establishment of Kyushu s first mosque. It is true that Japan is prone to earthquakes. However, Fukuoka is said to be one of the most earthquake-resistant cities in Japan. Moreover, Fukuoka is over 1,000km away from Fukushima where a 9.0-earthquake struck in The levels of radiation in the city remain essentially the same as before the crisis.
