In an individual world as pigeon racing, fanciers are mostly opponents and act like it. However sometimes respect results in friendship; like for Gerard Koopman and Marcel Sangers. Gerard knows I am willing to put as much energy in my pigeons as he does and also on personal matters we are on the same level. Therefore I know he always gave me pigeons of which qualities he was totally convinced. Since Marcels first visit in Ermerveen they spend many hours discussing pigeons and more... Gerard and Marcel even spend several vacations. Our friendship is more than pigeons, says Gerard Koopman. We share the same humor and interests. On occasions the subject pigeons does not even appear in our conversations. Because of our close friendship I feel very dedicated to Marcel s success. Whether you are pro or against, it s simply a fact that you cannot neglect. In the mid 20th century, almost every family in Belgium had pigeons: colonies of 10 old and 20 young pigeons at the most and they were played mainly on the nest... those days have passed. Widowhood made its entry, first cocks and later-on hens as well. Many top racers of this moment are using the method of total widowhood : cocks as well as hens are put into the basket.
