4 GRC : Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete Glass fibre Reinforced Concrete (GRC/GFRC) is a cement-based composite material reinforced with glass fibres. It is a mixture of cement, fine aggregate, water, chemical admixtures and glassfibres. The fibres add flexural, tensile and impact strength and the resulting material allows the production of strong, yet lightweight, products used in architectural, civil engineering and many other applications. There are a number of different manufacturing processes; the most common are Hand-Spray and Premix. GRC is a material which today is making a significant contribution to the economics, to the technology and to the aesthetics of the construction industry worldwide. This environmentally friendly composite, is being formed into a great variety of products and is widely used amongst designers, architects, engineers and end users for its flexible ability to meet performance, appearance and cost parameters. 4

5 GRC : Glassfibre Reinforced Concrete Lightweight Products Although GRC has a similar density to concrete the products made from it are many times lighter due to the thin 10-15mm skin thickness used. A cladding panel manufactured from 100mm thick precast concrete would weigh 240kgs per m2 compared to a similar GRC panel of 40-50kgs/m2. In fact many GRC products can be lifted and carried by hand. Corrosion and Rot Proof GRC products do not contain problems associated with corrosion of steel reinforcement. GRC is unaffected by external exposure and will not rot. It is completely unaffected by exposure to UV light. Incombustible Most GRC formulations comply with noncombustible criteria for EU standards. Polymer GRC conforms to the requirements of Class O defined by the UK Building Regulations. Appearance GRC has a wide flexibility in design and manufacture, which enables it to reproduce most architectural styles and features. It can replicate virtually any surface detail and reproduce the appearance of materials such as stone, slate, terracotta and marble. Cost Effective GRC Products have been shown to provide economic solutions. Although the manufacturing costs may be higher than say concrete when the reduced handling, transport and fixing costs are considered there can be an overall saving. 5

8 PRODUCTS: GRC Wall Panels Fibercast GRC Wall Panels are available as wall units, window wall units, spandrels, mulions and column covers. Custom designed in sizes to suit the modular planning of the building. Their largest dimensions may be vertical or horizontal. Fibercast cladding wall panels are capable of accepting and transferring wind and self-weight and their own inertial seismic loads to the building s load resisting system. 8

9 PRODUCTS: GRC Wall Panels Fibercast wall panels are delivered to the site with steel studs integrated into the panels. The low weight of Fibercast Wall Panels decreases superimposed loads on the building s structural framing and foundation. The light weight of panels allows the contractor to quickly and efficiently erect panels even in hard to reach areas with smaller, less expensive cranes. The reduced construction time also results in faster enclosure of the building allowing quicker access by other trades. This faster completion time reduces interim financing costs, often resulting in earlier cash flow. 9
