The course combines private study, collaborative discussion tasks and live classrooms. You are required to complete a series of individual and group tasks as well as pass three assessed tasks based on the following: Introduction and orientation You will focus on the nature of online learning and how to foster an online community. Supporting online learners You will look at how learners develop online, compare common online learner profiles and learn how to identify and support learners in difficulty. You will examine the skills and qualities needed to be an effective academic manager and how to manage and develop teams working both face to face and remotely. Topics include theories of staff motivation and their application, managing performance and managing educational change. The course is suitable for experienced teachers who are now involved in teacher training courses or teacher support or who want to move into this area. Participants will have a nearfluent level of English, C2 minimum level. You will look at approaches to teacher training, running seminars and workshops, the role of observation in your context and ways to support teachers continuing professional development. During the course you will be able to evaluate and develop training approaches and materials relevant to your own context. You should consider this programme if you want to: Develop your skills in line managing teachers Gain a range of practical ideas and techniques to help you be a more effective academic manager Network and share ideas and best practice with other academic managers globally Entry requirements You will have a minimum of five years teaching experience, preferably in an ELT context. You will also need access to an ELT institution for information gathering and research. Course content Orientation Module The Orientation Module starts one week prior to your programme start date and participation is compulsory. It is delivered entirely online. Module One Introduction to Academic Module Two Observation and Giving Feedback Module Three Setting up INSETT Assessment and workload Active participation in all aspects of the online course (80% participation) is a course requirement. Course participants also submit a 2,500 word assignment at the end of each module. Course participants can typically expect to spend about 6-8 hours per week studying, both on and offline. Lessons are released on a weekly basis by the tutor and course participants are expected to work in lock step with their tutor group on each week s lesson. Each module lasts eight weeks, and participants then have a further two weeks to research and write the module assignments. The Certificate in Academic is a great course for newer managers. It gave me so many ideas, which I can try out in my school. It really gave me the support I needed.

The Diploma in Academic is for experienced academic managers (5+ years in post). You will currently be operating at a senior level in your institution, or will be planning to equip yourself to move to a more senior position. You should consider this programme if you want to: Have a clear understanding of the more strategic aspects of academic management Be equipped to function at a senior management level Undertake focused and supported research on a specific aspect of your organisation s operations Entry requirements You will already have at least five years academic management experience to at least Senior Teacher level. You will also need access to an ELT institution for information gathering and research. Course content Orientation Module The Orientation Module starts one week prior to your programme start date and participation is compulsory. It is delivered entirely online. Module One Managing Change Module Two Effective Communication Module Three Managing Customer Service Module Four Business Module Five Extended Assignment Assessment and workload Active participation in all aspects of the online course (80% participation) is a course requirement. Course participants also submit a 2,500 word assignment at the end of Module 1-4, and an Extended Assignment of 3,500 words at the end of Module 5. Course participants can typically expect to spend about 6-8 hours per week studying, both on and offline. Lessons are released on a weekly basis by the tutor and course participants are expected to work in lock step with their tutor group on each week s lesson. The Diploma in Educational is credit-bearing towards the MSc in TESOL offered by Aston University. Each module lasts eight weeks, and participants then have a further two weeks to research and write the module assignments.
