1 Crosswalk of Common Spine ICD-9-CM Codes to ICD-10 Codes As of October 1, 2015, all health care entities covered by the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) will be required to use ICD-10 codes in place of the existing ICD-9-CM code set for medical diagnoses. ICD-10 is a more detailed system that will allow for collection of more specific data about patient diagnoses. ICD-10 codes are 3-7 digits compared with the 3-5 digits in ICD-9-CM. Following is a crosswalk of ICD-9-CM codes commonly used in spine care to the new ICD-10 codes. These recommendations reflect the opinions of the NASS Coding Committee and do not constitute an official position or statement by NASS. Watch the NASS website for additional information as the transition deadline approaches. Additionally, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has numerous resources designed to assist in implementing ICD-10: ICD-9-CM Descriptor ICD-9-CM Code ICD-10 Descriptor ICD-10 Code Cervical Pain, Neck Cervicalgia M54.2 Disc degeneration Other cervical disc degeneration, cervical region M50.30 Disc herniation Other cervical disc displacement, cervical region M50.20 Disc herniation w/myelopathy Cervical disc disorder with myelopathy, cervical region M50.00 Disc space infection Other cervical disc disorders, cervical region M50.80 Cervical disc disorder,, cervical region Dislocation, vertebral Dislocation of cervical vertebrae, initial Fracture Fracture of neck,, initial Fracture compression Collapsed vertebra, not elsewhere spontaneous classified, site, initial for Age-related osteoporosis with current pathological, vertebra(e), initial for Pathological, other site, initial for Pathological in other disease, other site, initial for Fracture w/paralysis upper Unspecified displaced of first cervical vertebra, initial for closed Unspecified nondisplaced of M50.90 S13.101A S12.9XXA M48.50XA M80.08XA M84.48XA M84.68XA S12.000A S12.001A
