BBC Multimedia Workpacks For Science Holdsworth Associates Use your e-learning credits before they run out! Available on DVD and/or as MPEGs for your school computer network The excitement and controversy of science is captured within these multimedia resources, which aim to provide a real world context for the science curriculum. NEW Objective BBC film footage has been carefully selected to explain the latest scientific developments. The treatment is both informative and thought provoking to challenge pupils and stimulate debate about the role of science in society. The resources are applicable to a wide range of curricula. This includes the new science KS4 curriculum introduced in England in 2006, in which there is an emphasis on providing pupils with a broad understanding of science, equipping them with the necessary understanding to make informed decisions on science based issues. The worksheets, available for print and photocopy, ensure that pupils gain an understanding of the key points. They can be tailored by the teacher as required. The broadcast material is also available in MPEG, a compacted version which allows the films to be shown on an interactive whiteboard or put on to the computer network for pupils to view themselves as they work on the questions. Each Multimedia Workpack contains: Supporting news and documentary footage available on DVD and/ or MPEG Worksheets that cover the important teaching points in each subject that can be completed by pupils by hand or on computer included on CD ROM with full site licence Model answers for each worksheet PowerPoint templates for students to create their own presentations highlighting the main issues Aimed particularly to meet the needs of students at Key Stage 4, but also suitable for Key Stage 3 and 5. The resources are rigorous enough for science and geography, but are also topical and accessible for citizenship and PSHE courses. Great value at (excluding VAT) see inside for more details. Our website has specimen worksheets and answers. Tel Fax publishing@holdsworth-associates.co.uk

Drug discovery and development Students are introduced to the complex challenges involved in the discovery and development of new drugs: How do researchers identify potential new drugs? What is involved in testing these new compounds in preclinical and clinical trials? Why is the cost of developing new drugs so high? How will the sequencing of the human genome influence the development of future medicines? Students are challenged to debate the ethical issue of the use of animals in experiments, invited to consider how drugs and vaccines can be provided to developing countries and how development of drugs for neglected diseases can be funded. The environmental and ethical implications of the renewed interest in traditional medicinal plants so-called biopiracy are discussed and the difficult decisions that have to be made by NICE about the funding of drugs given the limited resources of the NHS are explored. The series of worksheets is supported by film clips that investigate some of these topics. What is a drug? Drug categories Drug discovery Animal testing Clinical trials Drug development costs NICE and the NHS Future medicines Infection and immunity Superbugs and MRSA, immunisation and the development of vaccines, the MMR controversy, and the rise of HIV/AIDS are all highly topical with new research emerging all the time. This multimedia workpack aims to capture the latest thinking and provide pupils with an insight into the scientific basis of infection and immunity. The worksheets and film clips cover contemporary scientific issues, including antibiotic development and resistance and the growing threat of malaria as an example of a vector-borne disease. The issues arising from the programmes are developed in the worksheets: Pathogens and infection Preventing infectious diseases Antibiotics Superbugs and MRSA Vaccine development The MMR controversy HIV/AIDS Malaria: A vector-borne disease The workpack also provides a useful resource for citizenship and PSHE courses. Other subjects in the Multimedia Workpack range... Business Studies Design Technology ICT Citizenship See inside flap for order form

Drug use and misuse This multimedia workpack explores the effects of commonly misused drugs on the brain. Students are introduced to interesting new developments that give insights into the short- and long-term effects of drug misuse and explain how genetic makeup can influence a person s response to these drugs. The worksheets and film clips also investigate how drug dependence and addiction develop and look at the science underlying rehabilitation strategies. The social and economic implications of drug misuse are covered too and students are challenged to evaluate drug education and awareness campaigns. The workpack also provides useful informative material to stimulate debate and discussion in citizenship and PSHE courses. The issues arising from the film clips are further developed in the series of worksheets. Drug misuse Drugs and society Smoking Alcohol Cannabis Drugs and sport Drug awareness and education Drug addiction and rehabilitation BBC film clips include: Drug misuse is a News report on the results of the 2006 Drugscope survey on patterns of drug misuse. It focuses on the dangers of the increase in the combined use of cocaine and heroin and the use of anabolic steroids for sport and body building. The social consequences of the increase in drug misuse, such as the associated increase in crime, are also highlighted. Teenagers and cannabis is a Newsround item that highlights the main findings of the Panorama programme on the dangers and harm of smoking cannabis. Alcohol awareness and education is a News report on the extent and consequences of alcohol abuse in Britain. It also investigates whether warnings on drinks bottles would be effective in making people aware of the dangers. What every teenager needs to know about alcohol is a film clip from a Panorama programme that reports on the high incidence of binge drinking in young teenagers and the strain that this puts on the emergency services. The film clip includes interviews with teenagers and considers long-term health and social consequences of binge drinking in the light of new scientific research presented in the programme. Science of addiction is a film clip from a Horizon programme that reports on the progress that scientists are making in understanding the changes in the brain that lead to addiction to drugs such as heroin, cocaine, nicotine and alcohol. The film clip also follows the stories of addicts who are trying to overcome their addictions and investigates how particular genes can make people more vulnerable to becoming addicted. Cannabis and pain relief is a news report on a clinical study of the effectiveness of cannabis in treating some types of pain. Drug testing, a Newsround item, looks at the use of drug testing kits by parents and teachers to detect whether teenagers are taking drugs and asks whether it is a good idea or an invasion of privacy. What every teenager needs to know about cannabis, a film clip from Panorama reports on the latest scientific research on the effects of cannabis on the developing brain and looks at the growing evidence of the link between cannabis and psychotic illnesses. The film clip shows the techniques that scientists use and interviews teenagers who discuss their use of cannabis. Coming soon: Brain and behaviour This workpack is in development and will include the following topics: Nerve transmission and reflexes Brain function Conditioning Learning Communication and language development Intelligence Short- and long-term memory Memory and ageing

Human genetics: The secret of life Infertility, designer babies, cloning and genetic engineering are some of the issues covered in this versatile resource. A series of short film clips helps students to understand the scientific background to new developments in human genetics and to consider the ethical issues that this new knowledge raises. The worksheets covering ethics also provide useful resources for citizenship courses. Issues arising from the programmes are developed in the worksheets, which cover the following subjects: The genetic code The human genome Genetic engineering Human genetic diseases Genetic testing Uses and abuses of genetic information Fertilisation and in vitro fertilisation (IVF) Cloning and human embryo research Designer babies and saviour siblings A healthy lifestyle The relationship between diet, exercise and health is investigated within this lively workpack. It helps pupils to understand the scientific background to the media stories and provides a good basis for science, citizenship, PSHE courses and health promoting schools initiatives. A series of worksheets focuses on the science behind heart disease, cancer and diabetes and the influence of lifestyle on these diseases. The worksheets are supported by a series of news film clips looking at healthy lifestyles, focussing on a healthy diet and the importance of exercise. The effects of obesity on the individual and on society are investigated and the role of schools in providing healthy meals, opportunities for exercise, and health awareness education are explored. Topics include: A healthy diet Exercise and health Obesity School meals A healthy heart Prevention and treatment of heart disease Diabetes Cancer Prevention and treatment of cancer The real food debate Organic, intensive, genetically modified, pesticides and food additives are words of great emotive value, but what is the science behind them. This workpack looks at contentious issues in food production. The worksheets and film clips cover contemporary scientific issues in food production. They compare organic and intensive farming methods, consider the welfare of farm animals, investigate the benefits and drawbacks of fish farms, and assess the effects of chemical and biological pest control. Topics include: Intensive and organic farming Animal production Farm animal welfare Fish farming Fertilisers Chemical and biological pest control Genetically modified food Local and organic food Food additives Food safety

Energy sources and recycling This resource helps students to understand the scientific background to the current energy debate.
