1 BBC Multimedia Workpacks For Science Holdsworth Associates Use your e-learning credits before they run out! Available on DVD and/or as MPEGs for your school computer network The excitement and controversy of science is captured within these multimedia resources, which aim to provide a real world context for the science curriculum. NEW Objective BBC film footage has been carefully selected to explain the latest scientific developments. The treatment is both informative and thought provoking to challenge pupils and stimulate debate about the role of science in society. The resources are applicable to a wide range of curricula. This includes the new science KS4 curriculum introduced in England in 2006, in which there is an emphasis on providing pupils with a broad understanding of science, equipping them with the necessary understanding to make informed decisions on science based issues. The worksheets, available for print and photocopy, ensure that pupils gain an understanding of the key points. They can be tailored by the teacher as required. The broadcast material is also available in MPEG, a compacted version which allows the films to be shown on an interactive whiteboard or put on to the computer network for pupils to view themselves as they work on the questions. 2 Drug discovery and development Students are introduced to the complex challenges involved in the discovery and development of new drugs: How do researchers identify potential new drugs? What is involved in testing these new compounds in preclinical and clinical trials? Why is the cost of developing new drugs so high? How will the sequencing of the human genome influence the development of future medicines? Students are challenged to debate the ethical issue of the use of animals in experiments, invited to consider how drugs and vaccines can be provided to developing countries and how development of drugs for neglected diseases can be funded. The environmental and ethical implications of the renewed interest in traditional medicinal plants so-called biopiracy are discussed and the difficult decisions that have to be made by NICE about the funding of drugs given the limited resources of the NHS are explored. 3 Drug use and misuse This multimedia workpack explores the effects of commonly misused drugs on the brain. Students are introduced to interesting new developments that give insights into the short- and long-term effects of drug misuse and explain how genetic makeup can influence a person s response to these drugs. The worksheets and film clips also investigate how drug dependence and addiction develop and look at the science underlying rehabilitation strategies. The social and economic implications of drug misuse are covered too and students are challenged to evaluate drug education and awareness campaigns. The workpack also provides useful informative material to stimulate debate and discussion in citizenship and PSHE courses. The social consequences of the increase in drug misuse, such as the associated increase in crime, are also highlighted. Teenagers and cannabis is a Newsround item that highlights the main findings of the Panorama programme on the dangers and harm of smoking cannabis. Alcohol awareness and education is a News report on the extent and consequences of alcohol abuse in Britain. It also investigates whether warnings on drinks bottles would be effective in making people aware of the dangers. What every teenager needs to know about alcohol is a film clip from a Panorama programme that reports on the high incidence of binge drinking in young teenagers and the strain that this puts on the emergency services. The film clip includes interviews with teenagers and considers long-term health and social consequences of binge drinking in the light of new scientific research presented in the programme. Science of addiction is a film clip from a Horizon programme that reports on the progress that scientists are making in understanding the changes in the brain that lead to addiction to drugs such as heroin, cocaine, nicotine and alcohol. The film clip also follows the stories of addicts who are trying to overcome their addictions and investigates how particular genes can make people more vulnerable to becoming addicted. Cannabis and pain relief is a news report on a clinical study of the effectiveness of cannabis in treating some types of pain. Drug testing, a Newsround item, looks at the use of drug testing kits by parents and teachers to detect whether teenagers are taking drugs and asks whether it is a good idea or an invasion of privacy. What every teenager needs to know about cannabis, a film clip from Panorama reports on the latest scientific research on the effects of cannabis on the developing brain and looks at the growing evidence of the link between cannabis and psychotic illnesses. The film clip shows the techniques that scientists use and interviews teenagers who discuss their use of cannabis.
