2 HOW IT WORKS Mobile Device Perspective (MDP) uses real smartphones to monitor mobile apps. These smartphones are electrically integrated at the hardware level by tapping the keypad or the touchscreen to drive the phone. The LCD of the mobile device is also electronically tapped to capture the screen output of the device in real time. With this integration, the phone can be controlled by a script that monitors the mobile app s performance. The MDP scripting tool can record any action, input, or gestures, such as taps and swipes, that are required to interact with the mobile app. Once the script is recorded, it is played back on the device over and over again to monitor the app s ongoing performance. Every time the script is executed, MDP captures the app s screens and measures the time it takes to go through the different pages of the application. On-Device Monitoring Mobile Device Perspective lets you monitor the responsiveness and availability of mobile apps after they are deployed in production. MDP monitors mobile apps by continuously performing typical user actions from the locations and wireless networks you choose. This helps you track the responsiveness and availability of mobile apps from an end-user perspective. Because monitoring is performed 24/7, MDP provides insights into realworld issues at the instant they start occurring. Monitoring on real devices gives you the direct feedback you need to understand and resolve customer issues. Once the monitoring scenario is defined, you can script the use case in the MDP console or have Keynote do it for you. The script is then provisioned for monitoring and MDP starts collecting measurements at the frequency you determine. Measurements can be taken from any device in any location. Because measurements run on real devices connected to live mobile networks, they provide the most accurate visibility into quality of service from the end-user s point of view. Electronically integrated real smartphone MDP measures response time for every action/step in the scenario being monitored. Key metrics that are calculated for every step include: Response Time: The total time taken to complete the step of the scenario. Availability: The percentage of successful scenarios completed based on the total number of scenarios measured for the selected time interval. Every step has a threshold time to complete. If a step takes longer than that threshold time, the measurement is marked as a failure. 2

Graphing in MyKeynote MDP results are viewable at any time in MyKeynote, a unified Web portal for all Keynote measurements. MyKeynote provides a high-level dashboard view of how your mobile apps are performing, as well as the ability to drill down into more detailed analysis of any individual measurement. MyKeynote graphs let you analyze and trend MDP performance data over time and break it down by location, mobile carrier, or device. 3

4 Troubleshooting with Application Activity MyKeynote also provides additional diagnostic information to help you troubleshoot issues with mobile apps. Application Activity provides a list of the servers involved in the mobile app transaction. With this information, you can immediately see how many connections are opened by the app and the times of each connection. Application Activity also provides the data and packet information uploaded and downloaded for each connection. This networklevel information lets you know if the server is overloaded and responding slowly, or if the cached content has expired, or simply if the network bandwidth has degraded. With Application Activity you can reduce mean time to diagnose (MTTD) and mean time to resolution (MTTR) for mobile app performance issues. 5 Network and Device Details MDP also captures the health of the device and the network conditions under which the measurement was taken. Within MyKeynote, you can see the average CPU and memory utilization of the app. In addition, MDP also reports network conditions such as signal strength, network type, location area code, and the cell ID to which the device is connected. 6 MDP deployment options Private Agents Keynote will deploy a private MDP test and measurement network based on your requirements building, operating, and managing the entire infrastructure dedicated to you. Your private test and measurement network can be deployed in any location, with any set of devices you choose. With private agents you also get remote access to the MDP device for interactive troubleshooting. Remote access allows you to completely control the device interacting with it as if it were in your own hands. You can perform touchscreen gestures such as taps, swipes, and zooms; orient the device in landscape and portrait mode; and play MDP scripts on demand. When you are connected to the remote device, you can see MDP in action as it monitors your app. You can see the different pages of our app being loaded while the MDP script runs, letting you quickly identify issues with your app. Public Agents MDP is also available on Keynote s public test and measurement network.
