2 Forward InJanuaryof2009,EnterpriseFlorida sstrategycouncilissuedadiscussionpaperthatoutlineditsfindingsrelativetothecurrentstateofstem science, technology,engineeringandmathematics educationandtheneedforastemproficientworkforcetoadvanceflorida sinnovationeconomy.thefindings indicatethat15ofthe20fastestgrowingjobsthrough2014willrequiresubstantialmathandsciencepreparation,andthatflorida,aswellastheunited Statesmoregenerally,isfailingtodevelopanadequatesupplyofSTEM capableworkers.florida sincreasinglyknowledge basedeconomyisdrivenby innovation,whichhasasitsfoundationadynamicandwell educatedworkforceequippedwithstemknowledgeandskills. Whiletheeconomycallsfora largerandmoreproficientstemworkforce,enrollmentandsuccessinthosecoursesisdeclining.asastateandnation,wearelosingground. Inresponsetothisinformation,leadersfromthebusiness,education,policy,andresearchcommunitieshavepledgedtoworkcollaborativelytocreateand implementabusiness led,evidence based,stemplanthatwillpositionfloridaasaleaderinmarketrelevantstemtalentdevelopmentandretention.this planwilllinktheneedsoftargetedindustrieswitheducationandtrainingtocreateandsustainaseamlesssystemforstemeducationinflorida. WesubmitthisreportofthecurrentstateofSTEMinFloridatoserveasaresourcedescribingachievementandperformancebaselinedatatobeusedinthe developmentofastrategicstemplan.asaresultofadvancementsintechnologyandanincreasinglyglobaleconomy,floridianstodaycompeteinan internationaljobmarket.therefore,webeginthisreportbycomparingtheperformanceofk 12studentsinournationtothatofstudentsinothernations, usingfindingsfromboththetrendsininternationalmathematicsandsciencestudy(timss)andtheprogrammeforinternationalstudentassessment(pisa). SourcesofinformationontheachievementofFlorida sk 12studentsincludetheNationalAssessmentofEducationalPrograms(NAEP),theFlorida ComprehensiveAssessmentTest(FCAT),studentenrollmentinupperlevelcourses,andstudentachievementonAdvancedPlacement(AP)exams.Withinthe FloridaStateUniversitySystem(SUS)andIndependentCollegesandUniversitiesofFlorida(ICUF),weexaminemetricsincludingcourseenrollment,majors chosen,anddegreesawardedacrossavarietyofstemfields.additionally,weutilizethesesourcesforevidenceregardingtherelativeperformanceoffemales andminorities.inordertoadvanceourstate seconomy,wemustfocusonimprovingthestemproficiencyofallfloridians.toachievethisaim,floridahas adoptedthenextgenerationsunshinestatestandards,identifyingthedeepcontentknowledgeandskillsthateachstudentmustdemonstrate,andisrevising thefcataccordingly.finally,weindicatesourcesofinformationfordescribingthecurrentstemworkforceinflorida.scienceandengineeringindicators 2010,producedbienniallybytheNationalScienceBoard,containsstatetrendsinscienceandtechnology.TheseindicatorsareusefulinexaminingFlorida s STEMprogress,andindeterminingitsnationalrankings.WehopethatthisSTEMeducationandworkforceinformationmaybeofusetobusinessleadersas theydefinetheregionalandstatewideneedsofflorida thedemandsideoftheworkforceequation.
