Galiev, the President of OSTU, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Professor, the Honoured Worker of Science and Engineeing of the Russian Federation Omsk State Transport University (OSTU) is one of the oldest educational institutions in Siberia. The OSTU establishment is closely connected with the great Trans-Siberian Railway construction that created the demand in qualified railway transport specialists. Training of engineers for locomotive and passenger cars enterprises started in Tomsk in From 1961 it continued in Omsk. Today OSTU is a multi-disciplinary higher education institution providing training in a wide range of higher education study programs with the period of 4 years for obtaining Bachelor s degree, 5 years Specialist s degree, 2 years Master s degree, 3-4 years Postgraduate study. The high quality of our graduates theoretical and professional training is achieved due to the University s teaching staff high level of scientific potential, modern training facilities, good accommodation conditions, catering, sports and recreation facilities for the students as well as scientific researches for industrial and transport enterprises carried out at the University. On the basis of these indicators OSTU takes the leading position in the Russian Federation Ministry for Education and Science rating among Russia s technical universities. The University quality management system in 2006 was certified in ISO 9001: 2000, GOST-R, EVROCERT, OQS, IQNet, in the subsequent years the system has been twice recertified. OSTU has been rewarded with the diploma of the Russian Federation government and the diploma and the medal in the quality field 100 the Best Russian Universities. Among our graduates there are directors of regional railroads, major industrial and transport enterprises and banks both in Russia and abroad. 2

3 Currently OSTU has a branch in the town of Taiga, which includes in its structure the Secondary Vocational School of Railway Transport, 3 institutes (Institute of Automation, Telecommunications and Information Technologies, Institute of Management and Economics, Institute of Railway Workers Advanced Training and Retraining), 5 faculties (Faculty of Mechanics, Faculty of Heat and Power Engineering, Faculty of Electromechanics, Faculty of Distance Learning, Faculty of Pre-University Training and Professional Orientation), Medical School of the Railway Transport, Omsk Secondary Vocational School of Railway Transport and 28 chairs providing quality training for more than 14,500 students including over 800 foreign students. The University Alumni Association (including foreign nationals) consists of approximately 5,000 people. The Association members take part in diverse activities of their Alma Mater contributing to OSTU development and prosperity. The Volunteer Center was opened in OSTU on May 14, OSTU volunteers help children s homes, boarding schools and war veterans. They take part in carrying out sport competitions both in Russia and abroad. 6 Today the University is a leading teaching, research and production complex with modern experimental facilities and experimental production, which deals with specific practical challenges that railway transport industry faces. The main fields of University research are the improvement of reliability and efficiency of the rolling stock functioning, improvement of electrical railways power systems, development of effective methods of service and production of automation devices, communication paths and systems, energy and resource saving technologies and equipment, improvement of the rolling stock repair etc. Students from Mongolia in front of the OSTU main building Students from Korea National University of Transportation taking an internship at OSTU In OSTU foreign nationals study Russian language at the preparatory department firstly, and then take the courses (programs for Bachelor s) they select. Individual and group teaching of Russian language to foreigners is organized during both the academic year and the summer holidays in July - August. More than 800 foreigners are obtaining higher professional education at the University. The Russian Language Summer School is organized at OSTU in 2010, because of the increasing demand for studying Russian as a foreign language. Approximately 30 foreigners study there annually. Students studying in the Summer School want to improve their language level for further successful studying at the University or to get communicative skills which can be used for their work in Russia or in their native country (for example in hospitality sphere). The Summer School students receive knowledge not only using books in lecture rooms, but also directly communicating with the Russian-speaking people during sightseeing programs. 7 City of Omsk, Omsk Region and Omsk People Omsk is the principal city and administrative center of Omsk region. It is situated in the center of Russia (2,555 km from Moscow) at the confluence of the rivers Irtysh and Om. Omsk was founded in 1716 as the fortress for protecting Russian frontier in Siberia. It acquired the town status in It had been the administrative center of Siberian Cossack Army until The construction of Trans- Siberian Railway in the late 19th century and the presence of the port on the river Irtysh river contributed to the development of industrial production and trade development in Omsk. From November 1918 to November 1919 the Russian Government, headed by the High Regent of Russia admiral A.V. Kolchak was stationed in Omsk. His headquarter was located in Omsk Railway Administration Building. In 1961 Omsk State Transport University was moved from Tomsk to Omsk and it occupied the building. Currently this building is under governmental protection as historic landmark. During World War II a lot of major industrial enterprises were evacuated to Omsk from European part of Russia. It was the time when Omsk population increased threefold. Today Omsk is a home for about 1,100,000 citizens. 2,100,000 people live in Omsk region on the territory of 139,700 square kilometers (that equals to the territories of Austria, Belgium and Netherlands together). There are a lot of freshwater and saline lakes in Omsk region. In the south the forest-steppe landscape is prevailing, in the north dark coniferous taiga. Oil and gas is extracted in the northern part of the region. The multinational population of Omsk region (counting more than 100 nationalities) consists mainly of Russians, Kazakhs, Ukrainians, Germans and Tatars. 7

10 Today s Omsk is one of the main industrial centres of Russia with such welldeveloped industries as mechanical engineering, machine-tool construction, electrical engineering and electronics, instrument making, petro chemistry, woodworking and foodstuffs manufacturing. Space rockets, engines, agricultural machines, oil-and-gas equipment and construction materials are also made in Omsk. Railway enterprises located in Omsk locomotive and car sheds, enterprises of power supply and transportation management are among the best in Russia in terms of equipment and efficiency. There are about 30 universities in Omsk. The most known are Omsk State Transport University, Omsk State Technical University, Omsk State University n.a. F.M. Dostoevskiy, Omsk State Pedagogical University, Siberian State University of Physical Culture and Sport, The Siberian Automobile and Highway Academy, Omsk Academy of the Ministry of the Interior of Russia, Omsk Law Academy and Omsk State Medical Academy so Omsk is often referred to as the city of students. Every fourth citizen of Omsk is a student. The city of Omsk is a culture and sports centre of Siberia. The history of the city is associated with the names of great Russian writer F.M. Dostoevsky and famous artist M.A. Vrubel, who was born there. The Omsk Symphony Orchestra and The Omsk State Russian Folk Choir are very famous both in Russia and abroad. Ice hockey team Avangard and volleyball team Omichka are among the leaders in national championships. There are a lot of sights in the city such as historical monuments, culture and architecture monuments, theatres, museums, concert-halls, a circus, exhibition halls, sport complexes, swimming pools, clubs, cafes and restaurants. Areas of such cooperation are: participation in TEMPUS, Erasmus Mundus and Georgius Agricola Programs for academic mobility of University of Vienna and Anton Fedosov students, postgraduate and lecturers; Master, University of Rome writing textbooks, establishing new laboratories; designing joint programs of bachelors and masters training; student groups exchange for educational and introductory practice; holding student scientific conferences in Russia and abroad; training candidates of science and further training courses for lecturers, transport and industrial enterprises workers; joint writing of scientific works and joint reporting at conferences. The foreign students studying at OSTU annually participate in All-Russian Review of Scientific Papers and Creative Works of foreign students in Tomsk Polytechnic University. OSTU is a leader among Transport Universities in Russia and other Universities of Omsk in terms of foreign students number. Dozens of OSTU students participants of international educational programs have studied in Wroclaw University of Technology, University of Wroclaw (Poland), Technical University of Dresden (Germany), Vienna University of Technology (Austria), Czech Technical University in Prague, Erfurt University of Applied Scences (Germany), and Lisbon University Nova de Lisboa (Portugal), training in Siemens AG (Germany). 12 Students of OSTU at International Transport Conference in Dresden The best participants of international programs obtained Master s degree of Halmstad University (Sweden), Czech Technical University in Prague, Rome University La Sapienza (Italy), successfully completed their postgraduate studies, obtained PhD degree (Candidate of Science) and are successfully pursuing their careers in Russia in OSTU or in industrial enterprises are studying and working in Europe and America. VII International symposium of Transport Universities of Europe and Asia in Dalian Among AMO members are Universities of Belarus, Bulgaria, Germany, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Slovakia, Czech Republic, Ukraine and Finland. Participation in AMO annual conferences and regular communication with colleagues from international departments of other high school members of AMO allows carrying out such work in the University more efficiently. OSTU is a member of the International Association of Transport Universities of Asian-Pacific Countries and the International Association of International Departments of Technical Universities in Eastern and Central Europe (AMO). 13 Weightlifting gym Dormitory Students of OSTU have an opportunity to go in for sports: football, volleyball, basketball, powerlifting, weightlifting, athletics, tennis, badminton, rhythmic gymnastics, swimming, skiing and chess. There are 7 academic buildings, a training ground of active railway equipment, 8 dormitories, a refectory, a clinic, a culture and recreational complex, sports grounds and gyms on the OSTU campus in the centre of Omsk. The core staff of the University is about 500 lecturers, among them 74% have academic degrees and ranks: 12% are Doctors of Science and professors and 62% are Candidates of Sciences (PhDs) and associate professors. 15 Living Conditions Omsk is located in the central part of Russia. Cold winters and hot summers are caused by continental climate. Average winter temperature is about 22 C, average summer temperature is about +22 C. Maximum temperatures can reach 35 C in winter and +35 C in summer. The water temperature in the Irtysh river often exceeds +22 C in summer. There are a lot of sunny days in Omsk on the average of 2,100 hours per year. The most attractive periods are spring and early summer with sunny weather and warm rains and September.
