Position of the NAEYC The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) recommends that programs construct comprehensive systems of curriculum, assessment, and program evaluation that fit together into a coherent educational system linked to child outcomes and/or standards.
Recommendations for Early Childhood Assessment To assess young children s strengths, progress, and needs - early childhood educators should use assessment methods that...
Recommendations for Early Childhood Assessment 1. Developmentally appropriate 2. Culturally and linguistically responsive 3. Tied to children s daily activities 4. Supported by professional development 5. Inclusive of families
What is Work Sampling? The Work Sampling System is an authentic assessment tool designed for children 3-years old through the 6 th grade.

Types of Assessment Screening Tools Diagnostic Tests Readiness Tests Achievement Assessments
Achievement Assessment Norm-Referenced Performance-Based On-demand Curriculum-Embedded/Authentic
Authentic Assessment Meaningful and relevant to the context of each child s life. Based on classroom experiences and activities. Allows children to demonstrate learning in many different ways.

Authentic Assessment Sensitive to a wide continuum of development. A good match for multi-cultural and multi-lingual populations. Uses children s authentic work as the basis for assessment.

Research Pittsburgh Work Sampling Achievement Study WJ-R (Woodcock-Johnson Revised) administered in F & S to measure achievement. Regression Analyses used to determine whether WSS Checklist and Summary Report ratings made a unique contribution to the child s performance on the WJ-R. Students in WSS classrooms surpassed children in non-wss classroom in Math and Language and went on in 3 rd grade standardized tests to also surpass non-wss children and all other students in grade level in Pittsburgh Public Schools.
Research An Analysis of Parents Reaction to Authentic Performance Assessment of 350 surveys were collected, representing a 70% return rate. 79% of parents rated WSS highly in helping them understand more about how their children learn. 69% of parents wanted to continue to receive Summary Reports.
Research Assessing language, literacy, and mathematics skills with Work Sampling for Head Start (WSHS) Reliability and validity of the language, literacy, and mathematics examined from Checklist data for 112 children. Results indicated very high reliability of WSHS subscales. Moderate correlations between WSHS and the outcomes and unique contributions to assessments of reading and mathematics by WSHS, over and above demographic variables. The ROC curves showed that WSHS can be used accurately by teachers to predict children s early mathematics and reading performance.
Benefits: Work Sampling Evaluate students individually rather than comparing them to one another. Emphasize higher order thinking skills. Encourages student involvement.
Benefits: Work Sampling Provides information on how children learn as well as what they are learning. Guides classroom instruction. Evaluates the whole child.
How Are We Reporting Child Progress? Infants and Toddlers Up to Age Three Developmental Profiles from The Ounce Scale Preschoolers Developmental Checklists from The Work Sampling System All Data to be Reported through WSS and Ounce Online Systems
How Often is Child Progress Data Collected? PKC, Head Start SAP, ABG PreK, and Star 3 & 4 programs will collect data 3 x each year October 1, February 1, and May 15 Early Intervention will collect data at the child s entry to and exit from the program Annual data will be collected starting in July 2009
