These qualifications reflect the requirements of professional organisations and meet the National Occupational Standards for each sector or industry. With their strong emphasis on developing practical skills alongside specialist knowledge and understanding of the sector, BTEC Higher Nationals are recognised internationally by employers as providing learners with the key concepts and practical skills for direct progression to, or within, employment. WHAT IS A HIGHER NATIONAL CERTIFICATE? A Higher National Certificate (HNC) is an internationally recognised Level 4 vocational qualification. Many HNCs cover the same subjects as an HND, however, an HNC is a level below an HND and two below that of a bachelor s degree (it is generally equivalent to first year of university). WHAT IS A HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA? A Higher National Diploma (HND) is an internationally recognised Level 5 vocational qualification that provides a vocational alternative to degree-level learning. An HND is equivalent to second year of University and can be converted into an Honours degree with additional study at a University (HNDs can allow entry into the second or third year at University). HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE AN HNC? Full time: One year Part time: Two years HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE AN HND? Full time: Two years Part time: Four years HOW ARE HNC/HNDS ASSESSED? HNC/HNDs are mainly assessed through assignments, projects and practical tasks that you complete throughout the course, not via exams. 4 HIGHER EDUCATION: EXPLAINED WHAT ARE THE ENTRY REQUIREMENTS? To study for an HNC/HND, you will need a relevant qualification or substantial work experience in a relevant area. Most HND courses require at least one A level (or equivalent Level 3 qualification) with a minimum of 60 UCAS points (some courses request a higher number of UCAS points, see individual course pages for details). You will also need to possess a good standard of literacy and numeracy, interviews are likely to include an initial assessment. It is worth noting that mature applicants (21 years and above), with suitable experience may be accepted without formal qualifications. All mature applicants will be expected to attend an interview prior to an offer being made. FEES, CHARGES & FUNDING TUITION FEE LOAN Every new learner is entitled to a Tuition Fee Loan (from Student Finance England) of up to 9,000 to cover tuition fees. This is not repayable until you are earning over 21,000 per year. MAINTENANCE GRANT A grant of up to 3,354 is available to help with living costs (amount available to you depends upon your household income). This does not have to be repaid. The amount of Maintenance Grant you secure will affect the amount of Maintenance Loan (described below) that you can borrow usually, the amount of Maintenance Loan you can borrow is reduced by 0.50p for every 1 of Maintenance Grant entitlement. FEES, CHARGES AND FUNDING WHAT CAN HNC/HNDs LEAD TO? HNCs and HNDs are designed to equip you with the skills needed in a particular field of work, so they can lead straight to a career. You can also use the qualifications to progress within your current career, for example as a stepping stone to gaining professional status. You can also convert your HNC or HND to a degree at university with additional study. Once you complete your course, HNCs can allow entry into the second year of a degree, while HNDs can allow entry into the second or third year. HOW MUCH DOES AN HNC/HND COST? At Kidderminster College, HNC/HND course fees are 5,900 or 7,450 per year (full-time) dependent on the subject you are studying. Tuition fees can be paid via a student loan or personal finance. See FEES, CHARGING & FUNDING opposite for information on student loans and grants. Annual fees for part-time HNC/HNDs are 50% of the cost of the full-time fee e.g. if a full-time course fee is 5,900 per year, this is 2,950 per year on a part-time basis. HOW DO I APPLY? If you are applying for HNC/HND in Dance or HNC/HND in Urban Electronic Music, you must apply via the UCAS website If you feel you would benefit from some help with your Personal Statement, please contact Learner Services on to make an appointment. Contact Learner Services on or [email protected] to request an application form or visit MAINTENANCE LOAN You can receive up to 7,675, dependent upon your household income, where you are living and where you are studying. The basic rate of a Maintenance Loan (65% of the maximum rate) doesn t depend on your household income the remaining 35% does. This is not repayable until you are earning over 21,000 per year. DISABLED STUDENT ALLOWANCES (DSAS) Disabled Student Allowances are available to learners who incur extra costs because of a disability, long-term health condition, mental health condition or specific learning disability. Disabled Student Allowances do not depend on household income how much you secure depends entirely upon your individual circumstances. Disabled Student Allowances do not have to be repaid. CHILDCARE GRANT The Childcare Grant helps with childcare costs if you have dependent children under 15 years of age (17 years of age if the child has special educational needs) in registered and approved childcare. You may receive up to per week for one child or up to 255 a week for more than one child, depending upon your household income. This does not have to be repaid. PARENTS LEARNING ALLOWANCE Parents Learning Allowance is to help with course-related costs if you have dependent children. You may receive up to 1,508 per year dependent upon your income and the income of your dependents. This does not have to be repaid. ADULT DEPENDENTS GRANT Adult Dependents Grant helps students who have an adult who depends on them financially. You may receive up to 2,642 per year depending on your income and the income of your dependents. She started her career in a bank at a time when no computerised systems were utilised. Part of Tracey s responsibility was to see the implementation of a new, fully computerised system as well as staff training, nationally. When Tracey left the bank, she decided to return to full-time education she completed a Higher National Diploma in Computing to allow her access to university, where she studied a BSc in Information Technology and Business. For Tracey s thesis, she developed an online booking system for a local therapy centre and managed the entire project development, implementation, evaluation and training. Since graduating, Tracey has taught in various colleges teaching HNC and HND courses and in this ever evolving field, she keeps updated with new software developments and information via conferences, contacts and training. NAME: MEHBOOB CHAUDHRY Mehboob is one of our IT Lecturers, he specialises in many computing fields including programming, networking, graphics, security and hardware/software. 8 DANCE HIGHER NATIONAL DIPLOMA (HND) IN DANCE Run in partnership with the University of Worcester. Learners will study at Kidderminster College. Please contact Elizabeth Winter on , or [email protected] TUTOR PROFILES NAME: ANNA LINES Anna Lines graduated with a BA (Hons) in Dance Performance from Middlesex University (2001). After training, Anna toured nationally with London based companies Adrenaline and Base Dance and has taught freelance for numerous schools, colleges and agencies including BSSD, Magpie Dance and the DanceXChange. Having trained with Anne Went (Principle Dancer for LCDC) in Cohen based Graham Technique, she currently lectures in Graham Technique and Performance and is passionate about maintaining this style as a fundamental part of British dance training. Anna is also Artistic Director and Choreographer for Translucent Dance Theatre, a company which is committed to creating honest work, which makes a connection with its audience regardless of age, race, gender or culture. She is currently working on a new work Maelstrom which will be toured in the coming year. NAME: TRACY SADLER Tracy has studied Dance from a very young age. She has been involved in a large number of dance performances, festivals and examinations in all styles of dance including Ballet, Jazz, Contemporary, Tap, African and Urban Dance. In 2011, Tracy completed her HND in Dance at Kidderminster College, she then completed a BA in Classical Ballet and Dance Performance at Ballet West in Scotland. Tracy graduated in 2012 and has returned to Kidderminster College to share her dance knowledge and experiences by teaching on the BTEC and HND dance courses. NAME: MARCIA EDWARDS Marcia Edwards first studied Performing Arts at Harrogate College, she then studied at the Northern School Of Contemporary Dance in Leeds. After graduating, Marcia trained with R.J.C (Reggae, Jazz, Contemporary), a male dance company, then went on to work with Ace Dance and Music (Birmingham), State of Emergency (London) and Dida Dance Company (Norway). She has toured nationally and internationally for performances, collaborated with other dance companies for productions for The National Trust and has performed at Croom Court on occasions. Marcia was a leader for the Big Dance in Birmingham, and has also been involved in Channel 4 s African Roots documentary. Some of the choreographers Marcia has worked with are Motionhouse Dance Theatre, Tavaziva Dance, Vincent Mantsoe, and Zeze Kolsted. Commercially, Marcia has worked alongside Britain s Got Talent Winners Diversity and George Sampson and has performed at the o2 arena and continues to perform in Switzerland, Paris and Zurich. Her teaching has also allowed her to take auditions for companies such as 2Faced Dance Company and she has taught at various schools, colleges and universities in the UK. NAME: GIUSEPPE MARCARELLI Guiseppe Marcarelli originally trained in Performing Arts and through this, developed a passion for Dance. He completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Dance while performing with Map Dance. During this time, he collaborated with international dance artists including Gregory Maqoma, Shobana Jeyasingh, Colin Poole, Matthias Sperling and Kiera Martin. On completion of his Post Graduate Diploma, Guiseppe danced for Mobius Dance Theatre Company touring for Such is Life in England and Scotland. Whilst working with various dance companies, Guiseppe has also taught throughout the country within art centres, schools, colleges and universities. Simon has worked for a number of small and large companies including Sega, EA games, Vivendi and Codemasters, and was a member of the BAFTA winning Formula 1 and DiRT2 teams. He has had a multitude of roles including a Senior Designer, Lead Artist and Concept Designer for a range of well known titles, from SpongeBob Square Pants to Sega Rally. NAME: DAVE CHIPP Dave graduated from Teesside University in Since then, he has taught Computer Games Development at Kidderminster College specializing in 3D modelling, 3D Animation and the development of captivating game worlds in 3D Game Engines. Dave s expertise lies in AutoDesk Maya, Pixologic ZBrush, Adobe Photoshop and the Unreal Development Kit. He has worked freelance with International Developers and has worked for the National Space Society of America. NAME: STEVE RICH After studying Computer Science at University, Steve worked as first line ICT support before taking on a role as the E-Systems Development Officer for a North West Development Agency project. Steve has experience managing IT systems including desktop hardware, software and websites and has also developed and delivered short computing courses. He has previously lectured at a college in Cheshire before moving to Kidderminster College. In his spare time, Steve consults and provides ICT support for individuals and small businesses. 10 MUSIC TUTOR PROFILES MUSIC EMERGING ARTISTS ACADEMY (RSL DIPLOMA FOR MUSIC PRACTITIONERS) The main focus of the course is on artist and repertoire development. You will be encouraged to explore yourself as an artist, manager or producer, evolving your music, your image and your brand. You will learn to develop yourself professionally in the context of the music industry today. Case studies NAME: Lauren Wright Lauren (pictured right) secured a record deal with Right Recordings and distribution via Universal. Her debut single Kiss Me was released September Lauren completed the Level 4 Rockschool Diploma for Creative Practitioners and gained a Distinction. Murphy McCaleb received his doctorate in Performance Studies from Birmingham Conservatoire (Birmingham City University) in March Previously he has received degrees in trombone performance and chamber music from the University of Alaska and the University of Michigan. A classical and jazz bass trombonist, Murphy has performed and given presentations around the United States, Canada, the UK, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Greece and Brazil. As a performer, Rob has shared the stage with the likes of Richie Havens (who opened the original Woodstock festival!) and Midge Ure (Visage, Ultravox, Band Aid). Jon has written reviews and features for many music technology magazines and is currently a design consultant for music software. Aged 16, he was signed to EMI Publishing and within three years Jon played the keyboard on over eight worldwide tours, working with legendary Tamla Motown and Stax artists. These relationships were re-ignited recently when Jon was approached and asked to be Music Director for several Motown Legend tours. He has worked with many international artists, has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Music, many qualifications in Music Technology and composed music for theatre, dance, film and television including a short that won a BAFTA award. NAME: JAY GARRATT Jay is a respected Lecturer and specialist in Music Technology but, like all of the team, he has a very strong proven track record within the industry which underlines his expertise that he shares with our learners. Under the moniker The Force, he enjoys a wide reputation as both a Drum and Bass Producer and DJ.
