7 Foreword This list of high-quality learning resources has been recommended by the Ministry of Education to assist students and teachers in Sharing What It Means to Be Healthy, which is the grade perspective in Health Education 4. This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of additional learning resources can be found on the Ministry of Education website. (CAN) indicates that a Canadian person/organization contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person/organization contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. (FNMI) indicates that a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes First Nations, Métis, or Inuit content. The Recommended Online Video Education Resources (ROVER) offers video programs that have been purchased by the Ministry for use in PreK-12 schools. Each recommended program contains a hyperlink directly to the program and accompanying resources (if provided). Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support the curriculum, Health Education 4. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best support curricula and meet the needs of their students, school, and community. Educators should choose these resources in accordance with their school division s learning resources selection policy. 12 Jenneli s Dance Author: Denny, Elizabeth Illustrator: Auchter, Chris (CORE, CAN) This picture book tells the story of Jenneli, a young girl who felt she was not special until her grandma taught her the Métis Red River Jig. Jenneli had fun dancing until the day that Grandma Lucee entered her in a jig contest. Jenneli was terrified, but with encouragement from her grandmother, she managed to participate in the contest and to feel good about her accomplishment. Colourful cartoon-style illustrations complement the text. Jenneli s Dance includes an information section on the Red River Jig. The leader knows that each child has talents, skills, and special qualities; therefore, in order to boost the children s self-esteem, she organizes a special program where the children have an opportunity to do or show an audience something that makes them proud. The children experience difficulties at first, but all of them manage to share something special. A teacher s guide is available. 17 Slim Goodbody s Life Skills 101 Author: Burstein, John (CORE) The two following books are from the Slim Goodbody s Life Skills 101 Series. Illustrated with appealing photographs, both books include a table of contents, a glossary, a bibliography of books and websites, and an index. Can We Be Friends?: Buddy-Building Strategies offers helpful advice on making friends, keeping friends, and ending friendships. This book is useful for teaching USC4.3 regarding healthy interpersonal and conflict resolution skills. What Should I Do? Making Good Decisions focuses on helping young students to make good decisions about important matters such as whether to tell the truth, even though it may have negative consequences. It offers information on eight decision-making skills that students should practise. This book is useful for teaching DM4.1 regarding personal responsibility and communication in making informed decisions. What Should I Do? also complements the Grades 3 and 5 curricula. Each vignette demonstrates nonviolent ways to deal with anger such as taking deep breaths, counting to 10, and talking about feelings of anger. The video stresses that while it is acceptable to be angry, it is never acceptable to hit, yell, or break things. A teacher s guide is available. (CORE) Written by a psychologist, this user-friendly book addresses emotions that everyone can relate to fear and worry. It discusses common childhood fears and worries, where these fears and worries originate, and it suggests coping skills for handling these emotions. What to Do When You re Scared & Worried also addresses bigger fears and worries that children may need counselling to handle (e.g., phobias, separation anxiety, generalized anxiety disorder, panic attacks, obsessive compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder). Cartoon-style illustrations, case studies, charts, and information bubbles help to make this resource appealing to students. Kids Health at (CORE) Developed by the Nemours Foundation, this website offers valuable information on numerous healthrelated topics to help children address challenges that life brings. Kids Help Phone at (CORE, CAN) The mission of Kids Help Phone is to improve the well-being of Canadian children and youth by providing them with anonymous and confidential professional counselling, referrals, and information through technologically-based communications media. Children can phone a counsellor directly at or communicate with a counsellor online. The service is available in French and English 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. Health Education 4 13

HIV/AIDS at provides excellent information for educators relating to HIV/AIDS including causes, protection, testing, treatment, care, and much more.
