2 What do School Social Workers do? School social workers are mental health professionals licensed to provide services that promote social, emotional and behavioral adjustment in school and in society. School Social Workers are employed by school districts to enhance the academic mission by providing services, which strengthen child/home/school/ and community partnerships.

3 The School Social Work Profession Requires a Masters degree in Social Work Is a specialized practice area beyond the masters degree requiring additional educational credits specific to school social work Includes licensing from the State of Michigan Department of Community Health

4 The School Social Work Profession Requires approval from the Michigan Department of Education following 1 year of successful supervised employment by another fully approved SSW Mandates Continuing Education credits for maintaining licensure and approval in all areas of mental health, ethics, and pain management MDE R School Social Workers must gain and maintain professional licensure initially through the university from where they obtained their MSW and continuously through the State of Michigan

16 How do SSW services support content standards? Through direct and collaborative services, GLCE s, HSCE s, EGLCE s, and EHSCE s are addressed Provide a continuum of services from global (all the standards/umbrella) to specific (direct skill) standards

17 How do SSW services support content standards? Example of Global support: ssw helping the family improve child s attendance so that they are in school and ready to learn daily Example of Direct/Specific standard intervention: teaching expression of feelings and needs tied to GLCE S.CN.02 ( speak clearly and audibly in complete, coherent sentences.. ) SSW provides unique perspective on instructing in these domains including specialized curricula, social stories, role playing, art, games, and other interventions
