3 A PLAN FOR SHS STUDENT'S FUTURE Seminole ISD 1:1 Technology Handbook ISSUING OF TECHNOLOGY DEVICES Parents and students must sign and return the Technology User Agreement, the Student Pledge and pay the non-refundable user fee before the device will be issued to the student for off campus use. Please read carefully and make sure you understand these documents before signing them. Any failure to comply with this agreement may terminate your rights of possession effective immediately and the District may repossess the property. Devices will be collected at the end of each school year for maintenance, cleaning and software installations. Students will be reassigned the same device each year until devices are replaced according to our current technology refresh schedule. All outstanding fees must be paid before device will be granted off campus use. TAKING CARE OF YOUR DEVICE Students are responsible for the care of the device they have been issued by the school. Devices that are broken or fail to work properly must be taken to the Technology Department. Never try to repair the computer yourself or have someone outside the District work on it, as this could void our warranty and cause you to incur additional charges. General Precautions No food or drink is allowed next to your device. Spills incur costly repairs that are not covered by warranty or insurance. Cords, cables and removable storage devices must be inserted and removed carefully. Students should never carry their laptops while the screen is open. Do not bend your screen back too far or carry your laptop by the screen. Devices should be closed or turned off when not in use to conserve battery life. Students must not add any writing, drawing, stickers, or labels to the device. Students are responsible for keeping their devices battery charged for school. Carrying Devices The protective carrying cases provide the device with sufficient padding to protect them from normal treatment and provide a suitable means for carrying the technology within the school. The following guidelines should be followed: The device should always be inside the protective carrying case when being transported, even in the halls between classes. Students will only be allowed to use the protective carrying case provided by the school District. Do not purchase different cases for the school device.

4 Screen Care The screens can be damaged if subjected to rough treatment. The screens are particularly sensitive to damage from excessive pressure on the screen. To avoid damage and costly repair charges, please adhere to the following rules: Do not lean on the top of the laptop when it is closed. Do no place anything near the device that could put pressure on the screen. Do no place anything in the carrying case that will press against the cover. Keep all objects (finger, pens, pencils, etc.) off of the screen. Do not place anything on the keyboard before closing the lid. Clean the screen only with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use Windex or other harsh chemicals to clean the screen. USING YOUR LAPTOP AT SCHOOL Technology should be used at school each day. In addition to teacher expectations for device use, school messages, announcements, calendars and schedules will be accessed using the laptops. Students are responsible for bringing their issued device to all classes. Students may provide their own lock for their locker for security. Devices Left at Home: If students leave their device at home, they must immediately tell a teacher and phone parents to bring it to school. Repeated violations of this policy may result in loss of take-home privileges or other disciplinary action. Device Undergoing Repair: Loaner devices will be issued to students when they leave their device for repair at the Technology Department, if needed. If the repair is/was covered under warranty, a loaner will be immediately issued. If repair is due to negligence, a loaner will not be issued for off campus usage until the charges incurred are paid. Charging the Battery: Technology devices must be brought to school each day fully charged. Students need to charge their laptop each evening. Screensavers and Backgrounds: Inappropriate media may not be used as a screensaver or background on your computer. Presence of weapons, pornographic materials, inappropriate language, alcohol, drugs, R-rated, or gang-related symbols or pictures will result in disciplinary actions. Sound: Sound must be muted at all times at school unless permission is obtained from the teacher for instructional purposes. At Home Use: If you encounter any issues/problems when using your home Internet connection, please call your Internet service provider first.

5 MANAGING FILES AND SAVING WORK Saving to the Home Directory: Students will be logging into our network in order to back up their work. Students will have their own user account and folder on the network with ample space to back up any school related work. Saving Data to Removable Storage Devices: Students will be responsible for backing up their work daily to their network drive. It is the student s responsibility to ensure that work is not lost due to mechanical failure or accidental deletion. Device malfunctions are not an acceptable excuse for not submitting work. Students may also use other removable media (thumb drives). Students who use a thumb drive to load inappropriate programs or games on the laptop will be subject to disciplinary actions including but not limited to losing the privilege of using removable media devices such as thumb drives. COMPUTER SYSTEMS Students are prohibited from downloading and/or installing files or software unless permission is granted by the Seminole ISD Technology Department. All users must respect the legal protections provided by copyright license to programs, books, articles and data. Installation of unlicensed software will not be permitted under any circumstance. Students are not allowed to use personal devices (including, but not limited to, PDA s, laptops, cell phones) to access the Seminole ISD network unless the campus Technology Department grants prior approval. Students shall not attempt to write, produce, generate, copy, propagate or introduce any computer code designed to self-replicated, damage, change or otherwise hinder the performance of any computer s memory, file system, or software. Such software is known as a bug, virus, worm, Trojan, or similar name. Vandalism is defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy district issued equipment and/or data of another user or of any other networks that are connected to the system. Deliberate attempts to degrade and/or disrupt system performance are violations of District policy and may constitute criminal activity under applicable state and federal laws. Any vandalism will result in the cancellation of system use privileges and will require restitution for costs associated with system restoration, as well as other appropriate consequences. INSPECTION Students may be selected at random to provide their laptop for inspection to check for restricted images, settings, etc. Also, while logged in to the school s network, technology staff will have the ability to view the desktops of all, to capture images from them, and to freeze or take over control of the device if they are being used in a manner contrary to school policy and the Acceptable Use Agreement. This will be used to ensure that devices are being used for educational reasons and that students are staying on task.

6 RE-IMAGING AND RESETTING Occasionally, it will be necessary to re-image a laptop s hard drive and/or re-sync a device to it s original settings. It may be required in order to repair software or hardware issues, or to remove inappropriate content from a device. If reimaging is required due to misuse by a student, there will be a $15 reimaging fee charged. Reimaging the laptop could result in the loss of all personal data. The school does not accept responsibility for the loss of any software or files due to a reimage. ACCEPTABLE USE General Guidelines: Student will have access to all available forms of electronic media and communication, which is in support of the educational goals, and objectives of Seminole ISD. Students are responsible for their ethical and educational use of the technology resources of SISD. Access to SISD technology resources is a privilege and not a right. Transmission of any material that is in violation of any federal or state law is prohibited. This includes but is not limited to: confidential information, copyrighted material, threatening or obscene material, and computer viruses. Any attempt to alter data, the configuration of a computer, or the files of another user, without the consent of the individual, campus administrator or technology staff, will be considered an act of vandalism and will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Cyber bullying will not be tolerated and the campus principal will take appropriate disciplinary action immediately. Privacy and Safety: Do not open, use or change computer files that do not belong to you. Do not reveal your full name, phone number, home address, social security number, credit card numbers, password or passwords of other people. Remember that the information stored on your computer is not guaranteed to be private or confidential. If you inadvertently access a web site that contains obscene, pornographic, or otherwise offensive material, you must notify a teacher or an administrator immediately so that such sites can be blocked, and you will not be disciplined for breaking the Acceptable Use Agreement or Student Code of Conduct. This is not a request it is a responsibility. When using the Internet at home you will be filtered through the schools web filter, any attempt to use proxy sites and or get around the filter will result in disciplinary action action in accordance with the Student Code of Conduct. Legal Property: Comply with trademark and copyright laws and all license agreements. Ignorance of the law is not immunity. If you are unsure, ask a teacher or parent. Plagiarism is a violation of the SISD Student Code of Conduct. Give credit to all sources used, whether quoted or summarized. This includes all forms of media on the Internet such as graphics, movies, music, and text. Use or possession of hacking software is strictly prohibited, and violators will be subject to severe disciplinary penalties. Violation of applicable state or federal law

7 including the Texas Penal Code, Computer Crimes, will result in criminal prosecution and/or disciplinary action by the District. and Chat Rooms: Personal and chat rooms are not to be used at school. Exceptions will be made for school-safe accounts authorized by Seminole ISD. If you choose to from your computer while at home: s and documents on school-owned equipment are part of the public domain, are not private and are subject to inspection. Always use appropriate language. Do not transmit language/material that is profane, obscene, abusive, or offensive to others. Do not send mass s, chain letters, or spam. Students should maintain high integrity with regard to content. Consequences: The student whose name is on the account and/or the student who the device is issued to will be responsible at all times for its appropriate use. This means if someone else uses your computer to break the rules, you are still responsible. Non-compliance with the policies of the Laptop Handbook and Technology Acceptable Use Agreement will result in disciplinary action as outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. Electronic mail, network usage, and all stored files shall not be considered confidential and may be monitored at any time by a designated District staff member to ensure appropriate use. The District cooperates fully with local, state or federal officials in any investigation concerning or relating to violations of computer crime laws. The Texas Open Records Act governs contents of and network communications. Music, Games or Programs: Any music downloaded must be appropriate as per District policy. Any games streamed over the Internet must be appropriate as per District policy. Decisions regarding appropriate music and games will be at the discretion of the Campus administration and the SISD Technology Department. All copyright laws will be enforced. There is a $15 dollar reimaging charge to remove any of the above items. PROTECTING AND STORING YOUR LAPTOP Laptop Identification: Equipment will be labeled in the manner specified by the school. Labels are NOT to be intentionally removed from the device, chargers or bags. Devices can be identified in the following ways: Record of serial number Individual User account name and password Password Protection: Students are expected to keep their password confidential. Remember that if someone logs into your computer and breaks the Acceptable Use Agreement, you are still responsible for

8 all inappropriate items found on your laptop. It is in your best interest to keep your password secure. Transporting Your Laptop: Devices must be transported in school-provided cases. To prevent system damage, laptops need to be closed and placed in school provided carrying case. Devices do NOT have to be shut down (turned off) between classes. Devices should be shut down daily. Batteries must be charged prior to arriving at school each day. Students will be allowed to recharge their device each day during classes that are conducive to this. Very FEW classes will have this capability. Laptops Left in Unsupervised Areas: Under no circumstances should issued devices be left in unsupervised areas. Unsupervised areas include but are not limited to the school grounds and campus, the cafeteria, computer labs, hallways, library, unlocked lockers, classrooms and unlocked dressing rooms. Any computer left in these areas is in danger of being stolen. Unsupervised laptops will be confiscated by staff and taken to the Campus Principal or Technology Department. There will be a recovery fee for leaving your laptop in an unsupervised location. Loss or Damage: If the property is damaged, lost or stolen, you are responsible for the reasonable cost of the repair or its fair market value on the date of loss. Loss or theft of the property must be reported to the District by the next school day after the occurrence. In case of theft, vandalism, and other criminal acts, the student or parent must file a police report within 48 hours of the occurrence. Incidents happening off campus must be reported to the police by the parent and a copy of the report is to be brought to school. Seniors must clear all records and pay all fees before participation in graduation ceremonies. REPAIRING OR REPLACING YOUR LAPTOP Apple Warranty: Apple warrants the device from defects in materials and workmanship. This limited warranty covers normal use, mechanical breakdown, or faulty construction and will provide replacement parts necessary to repair the device or replace it. The Apple warranty does not warrant against damage caused by misuse, abuse, accidents, or computer viruses. If this happens, the device must be sent off for repair. This will incur charges for the full cost of the repair and/or fair market value cost of the laptop. Loaner devices for off campus use will only be provided after the repair cost has been paid. If repair/replacement costs are not paid an administrative decision will be made regarding the student s further take-home privileges.

9 Loss of Replacement Computer Parts/Accessories: If a student loses or destroys any of the following components, they will be charged full replacement costs for those items. Currently those prices are as follows and are subject to change: Laptop Replacement Fair Market Value Power Module/Cord - $80.00 Laptop Carrying Case - $25.00 Broken Screen - $ Damaged Keyboard - $ Recovery Fee - $10.00 TECHNICAL SUPPORT The Technology Department coordinates the repair work for devices. Services provided include the following: Hardware maintenance and repairs Password identification User account support Operating system of software configuration support Application information Reimaging hard drives Updates and software installations Coordination of warranty repairs Distribution of loaner devices and batteries REQUIRED COMPUTER USER FEE Parents/guardian of students identified as economically disadvantaged may request a full or partial fee waiver from the superintendent or superintendent designee. 1 student: $ students: $ students: $ students: $ TERM OF AGREEMENT Your right to use and possession of the property terminates not later than the last day of the school year unless earlier terminated by the District or upon withdrawal from the District. Your failure to return the property in a timely manner and the continued use of it for non-school purposes without the District s consent may be considered unlawful appropriation of the District s property.

10 INTERNET SAFETY TIPS FOR PARENTS LOCATION The device should be in a central location in the home where you can see it and monitor use. You should be able to see their screen while the student is online. If the student takes the device to a friends home, talk with their parents about how they monitor online access. Spend time with your child online. Have them teach you about their favorite online destinations. MONITOR Monitor your child s usage. Limit Internet, , instant messaging, and chat room access. Make sure you know where your child is going online, where he/she s been, and with whom. Closely monitor your child s participation in any chat room. Make sure you understand how your children are using the device, what web sites they are visiting and who they are communicating with online. Always maintain access to your child s online account and randomly check his/her . Be upfront with them about your access and the reason why. COMMUNICATE with your child about your expectations and what you consider appropriate for him/her while they are online. TIPS TO DISCUSS WITH YOUR STUDENT: Never give out any type of personal information to anyone on the Internet. (Including name, address, phone, age, family income, friend s names, school location, photos, etc.) Never use your parent s credit card on the Internet without their permission or supervision. Credit cards should never be used on sites that are not secure. Never share passwords with anyone. When selecting passwords to use on the Internet, do not pick something that could easily be figured out or deciphered or is a common term. Never arrange a face-to-face meeting with anyone you have met on the Internet. People you meet in a chat room may not be who they appear to be; Sally who says she s 12 can really be Bob who is 45. Never open s if you do not know whom they are from or if they make you feel uncomfortable in any way. Unsolicited that is opened could give you a virus and be the cause of unwanted mail (spam). Never click on banner ads in a site. Most of the time, they will add your address to a database and you will receive unwanted spam . Never use bad language or send mean or threatening . Never joke around about inappropriate things when ing others. Likewise, never respond to messages or bulletin board postings that are suggestive, obscene, belligerent, or harassing. Never upload (post) pictures of yourself or your friends/family to the Internet or online services to people you do not personally know. 11 Student Pledge for Device Use I will take good care of my device and know that I will be issued the same device each year. I will never leave the device unattended. I will never loan out my device to other individuals or share my password with anyone. I will know where my device is at all times. I will charge my device battery daily. I will keep food and beverages away from my device since they may cause damage to the device. I will not disassemble any part of my device or attempt any repairs. I will protect my device by only carrying it while in the carrying case provided by the District. I will only use my device in ways that are appropriate and educational. I will not deface the device. (stickers, markers, writing etc.). I understand that my device is subject to inspection at any time without notice and remains the property of Seminole ISD. I will follow the policies outlined in Seminole ISD s Acceptable Use Policy while at school and any other place I use my device. I will file a police report in case of theft, vandalism, and other acts covered by insurance. I will be responsible for all damage or loss caused by neglect or abuse. I agree to pay for the replacement of power cords or carrying case in the event any of these items are lost or stolen. I agree to return the District devices and power cords in good working condition immediately upon request by the District. Student Signature :

It is my responsibility to care for the equipment and ensure that it is retained in a safe environment. This equipment is the property of Seminole ISD of Seminole, TX and is herewith being loaned to the student member for educational purposes for the academic school year or until further notice. The equipment may not be defaced or destroyed in any way. Inappropriate material on the machine may result in the student losing his/her right to use this computer or disciplinary action. The equipment will be returned to the school on a date to be requested or sooner if the student is discharged from the school prior to the end of the school year. Borrower acknowledges and agrees the Borrower s use of the District Property is a privilege and that by Borrower s agreement to the terms hereof, Borrower acknowledges Borrower s responsibility to protect and safeguard the District property and to return the same in good condition and repair. BY SIGNING THIS FORM I ACKNOWLEDGE THAT I HAVE READ ALL PAPERWORK INCLUDED IN THIS PACKET AND AGREE TO ALL TERMS AND CONDITIONS THEREOF.
