WELCOME TO HAYWARD HOUSE Introduction Hayward House is a Specialist Palliative Care Cancer Unit in the grounds of the City Hospital campus, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust. We provide high quality holistic care centred on the needs of patients and their families. Our aim is to enrich the quality of life through the skills of an experienced and caring team. This booklet is an introduction to the team, services and facilities available on the inpatient unit. Hayward House was opened on 3 October 1980 by Her Royal Highness, The Duchess of Kent. The funding for the unit came from the Hayward Foundation, the Macmillan fund and the people of Nottinghamshire. If you have any worries or questions at any time, please do not hesitate to speak to a member of staff. We will be very pleased to help you. Admission and referral Admission may be required for patients who have a more complex mixture of physical, emotional, social or spiritual needs. Referral to Hayward House is usually through your own GP. If you are in hospital, referral is usually done through your consultant. Admission is determined by your needs, and the needs of your family and carers, and is decided by the team at Hayward House. 2
What happens when I arrive at Hayward House? Please come directly to Reception. You will be welcomed by a nurse and shown to your bed. We will show you and your family around the unit and show you all the facilities. Things to bring Please bring a choice of clothing including day and nightwear, toiletries, slippers, and comfortable flat shoes. Please feel free to bring any family photos or personal items that may make you feel more at home during your stay. Patient services Meals Approximate mealtimes: Breakfast am Lunch pm Tea pm We have protected meal time from 11.45am 12.45pm. Please let staff know if you require a special diet (diabetic, gluten free, vegetarian, Halal, Kosher). Hot drinks are also provided in the morning, afternoon and evening. If you would like a snack at anytime please ask the nursing staff. If relatives wish to bring you something extra, there is a small kitchen where they may prepare snacks. If you 3
would prefer to eat your meal at a dining table rather than at the bedside, please let one of the nursing staff know and we will arrange for you to have your meal using the dining facilities in Day Care. A dietician is available to discuss your dietary needs. Clothing and laundry A small wardrobe and locker will be available for your own personal use. We hope you will be well enough to be up and dressed while you are here, so please bring some day clothes. Unfortunately, we cannot undertake to wash personal clothing. The majority of patients send their laundry home with their relatives or carers. Money and valuables You are strongly advised not to bring valuables or any money into Hayward House other than a small amount for day to day spending. If you do bring valuables you are advised to hand them to a staff nurse in charge for safekeeping. Hayward House cannot accept responsibility for loss of, or damage to, items of property unless they are handed in. You will be given a receipt when this is done. To get your money or valuables back please inform a staff nurse. Interpreting Service If you, or a member of your family, require an interpreter one can be arranged through the Interpreting Service at City Hospital Campus. 4
Mobile phones Mobile phones may be used on the unit by patients and their families, but we would ask you to use them with consideration for other patients. Day Sitting Room There is a sitting room for patients and visitors in the inpatient area. Day Care If you are feeling well enough you may have the opportunity to go to Day Care to take part in day care activities. This includes artwork and crafts. A member of staff can discuss this with you. The Day Care area is open until 5pm to inpatients and visitors when Day Care patients have gone home. It contains a conservatory and a quiet area. Gardens Hayward House has attractive, easily accessible gardens with seating areas where patients and their visitors can spend some time (weather permitting of course!) 5
Newspapers Newspapers are available daily. A member of staff will be pleased to collect your order and payment on a daily basis. Hairdressing A hairdresser is available most days during the week. There is a charge for this service. Please let a member of staff know if you would like to see the hairdresser and they will make an appointment for you. Pets Pets may be brought into Hayward House provided they are well behaved and do not disturb other patients. If you would like to do this please ask a member of staff. At times the unit has access to a pat dog. If you would like to see one please let a member of staff know. They can organise for his owners to bring him in to visit you. Entertainment TV/DVD sets are available at each bedside. Radio/CD players are available from staff on request. There is also a supply of CDs, talking books and DVD s. We would ask that you respect other patients' need for quiet when using this equipment. In shared rooms the use of earphones will prevent other patients being unduly disturbed by noise. A laptop with internet access is available. Please ask a member of staff. 6
Alcohol A small selection of drinks is available on the unit. Alternatively, you may bring alcohol to the unit for your own consumption, under the direction of staff. Smoking Due to changes to the legislation and NUH being a smoke-free site, patients and visitors are requested not to smoke. Alternatives such as patches are available for patients. Provisions can be made outside the building for patients who do continue to smoke, however this is under medical authorization and with the assistance of friends and relatives. Patients are asked not to smoke outside other patient s room windows as the smoke can enter their rooms. Smoking is not permitted at the front of the building or at night time between the hours of 11pm and 6am. Visitors are not permitted to smoke anywhere at all on the campus. 7
Visitors Visiting hours 10.45am 11.45am and 2pm 8pm Protected meal time 11.45am 12.45pm We encourage visiting as it can be very helpful for patients. However, we would ask that visitors do not visit until after am if possible, as before this time patients may be receiving nursing care. If you wish to see patients outside visiting hours please discuss with a member of staff. To help reduce infections visitors are encouraged to use the antiseptic gel available throughout the unit. If at any time during your stay, you do not wish to receive visitors please inform your nurse who will ensure your wishes are respected. Children Children are very welcome at Hayward House. There is a children s area in the sitting room. Unfortunately, as we are unable to take responsibility for children in the building, we would ask that a parent/guardian supervise their children at all times. Meals for relatives We are not able to provide meals for visitors, but a snack bar is open in Day Care between 10am and 3pm on weekdays. A small kitchen is also available to make 8
drinks and snacks. Visitors may also bring sandwiches and snacks. If you wish to use the fridge to store your food please use the date labels provided. Drinks and snacks Drinks and snacks can be obtained from the vending machines in reception. A hot drinks machine is to be found near the relatives room, not far from the entrance to Day Care. City Side Restaurant Meals and snacks are available at the City Side restaurant seven days a week. This can be found opposite the main entrance to the hospital on the North Road. Coffee City and WVRS shops WRVS and Coffee City shops sell snacks and sandwiches and are to be found throughout the hospital. The nearest WRVS shop is found at the medicine south entrance (S7). The nearest Coffee City is to be found at south entrance (S1) (see hospital map). Car parking A pay and display car park for visitors is available in close proximity to the Unit. It is possible to drop passengers off at the main entrance to Hayward House but the car would then need to be parked in the pay and display car park. There are designated car spaces for 9
disabled badge holders at Hayward House and near medicine south entrance. For relatives who need to stay for prolonged periods of time, please ask the nurse in charge about car park passes. Please do not leave any valuables in your car and ensure it is securely locked. Overnight accommodation This is available for a relative or carer wishing to stay overnight. Please discuss this with a staff nurse if you would like more details. Professional care Medication Please bring all of your medicines and tablets with you into Hayward House so that the doctor can see them. With your permission, there may be times when we use those medications you have brought in from home. If there have been any recent changes to your medication, please let the doctor know. It is important that during your stay at Hayward House you do not take tablets or medicines other than those prescribed for you. 10
The nursing staff need to concentrate when administering tablets. Please ask an alternative member of staff if you need assistance during this time. When you go home you will be given a seven day supply of medication. You will also be given an information chart explaining what the medication is for and when to take it. We will try to make your medication as simple as possible. Nursing services The matron is in overall charge of nursing services. The nursing staff on the unit are lead by the Ward Sister /Charge Nurse. They are divided into two teams, a red team and a blue team. Each team is led by a team leader. The following is a guide to help you recognise staff by their uniforms. 15 Social work service Hayward House can arrange for a social worker to see patients, relatives and carers. The Social Worker will work with you to identify your social, practical and financial needs and offer appropriate help and support. This may include, for example, welfare rights advice or assistance with arranging practical help at home. They are here to listen and talk things through with you at any stage of your stay. Please feel free to get in touch. Spiritual care Each patient is cared for with respect for personal belief, religion or culture. Spiritual care is part of the care offered at Hayward House. We can ask for a representative of your faith to see you while you are at Hayward House. Your own clergy are also most welcome to visit you during your stay. A chaplain is based part time at Hayward House and would be very pleased to see you whether or not you have a particular faith. There is a small chapel between reception and Day Care that you are most welcome to visit. On Thursdays at 11.30am in the Chapel there is a short Service at which all are welcome regardless of denomination. Holy Communion can be brought to the bedside by a Chaplain on Sunday morning (or any day of the week). We also keep a collection of sacred books from all major faiths which are available on request. 14
There is a Muslim Prayer Room on the South Corridor of the main hospital. Please ask your nurse if you wish to visit. Cancerbackup A Cancerbackup information centre is located in the main hospital building near Oncology Outpatients. It is run by staff who can help patients, relatives and carers find useful sources of information Complementary therapy Complementary therapies such as massage, aromatherapy, reflexology and hypnotherapy are provided by trained practitioners for both inpatient and Day Care patients. Therapies are provided either in the Complementary Therapy unit near Day Care or at the bedside. Please discuss this with a member of staff if you would like more details. Volunteers Volunteers freely give their time to help in many areas of Hayward House. They are fully aware of the need for confidentially. Counselling The counselling service is available for patients as well as for relatives and friends. If you feel support is needed in this way, please ask a member of staff for a counselling referral or for a member of the counselling team to contact you. 15
Education We are actively involved at Hayward House in educating and in sharing our skills with other health care staff. We do this both on the ward itself and in the Study Centre near Day Care. We sometimes have students, other health care staff and overseas visitors at Hayward House who would like to know more about what we do. They are supervised at all times by an appropriate member of staff. While patients assistance with education is much appreciated, there is no obligation to help. No explanation would be necessary and would not affect any subsequent care or treatment. Research We are keen at Hayward House to improve our knowledge and understanding of the kinds of problems patients have. To do this we have a research department at Hayward House. The research office is based in Day Care. The research team is headed by Dr Wilcock and includes research nurses and a specialist registrar. Occasionally, patients are asked for their help with research that is being carried out. While patients participation is much appreciated, there is no obligation to help. No explanation would be necessary and would not affect any subsequent care or treatment. 16
Cardiopulmonary (heart and lung) resuscitation (CPR) It is very rare for the heart or breathing to suddenly stop unexpectedly (a cardiopulmonary arrest). If it were to happen though, experience tells us that in people with conditions such as advanced cancer, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR; giving mouth-to-mouth breathing and pressing on the chest over the heart) is rarely successful in restarting the heart and breathing. Given that for the vast majority of people admitted to Hayward House CPR is unlikely to help, we do not routinely carry it out. If it is thought to be of some possible help to you, the doctor will discuss this with you. If you would like more information, please ask your doctor or nurse. A detailed leaflet available called Decisions about Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation can be found in the leaflet stand near reception. Other issues Advanced Directives If you have an Advanced Decision to Refuse Treatment (ADRT) form, please let us know. Information on ADRTs can be found on If you would like more information on ADRTs, please inform a member of staff. 17
Lasting Power of Attorney If you have appointed a personal welfare Lasting Power of Attorney, please let us know. Organ Donation If you have made any arrangements for organ donation, please let us know. If you would like to know more about organ donation please ask a member of staff. Please also let us know if you have made any arrangements around donating your body to medical science. Discharge and follow-up services Hayward House is a short stay unit with most patients staying an average of two weeks. A few days after your admission, staff will talk with you and your carers about your discharge and any help and support you may need when you go home. There are many different forms of help available in the community. If you are having problems at home, do please talk to a member of staff so we can try and arrange the appropriate help. Gratuities Staffs at Hayward House do not expect gifts or gratuities of any kind. If however you feel especially pleased with the care you receive, a card or note is always appreciated. 18
Donations We are very grateful for donations to Hayward House. Should you wish to make a donation, this can be done through the Hayward House Cancer Care Trust (charity registration no ). Further information on donations can be found in the leaflet entitled Hayward House Cancer Care Trust which can be found in the leaflet stand near reception. Staff will be happy to advise you on this. Suggestions Our aim is to provide care of the highest standard. Please feel free to make any suggestions that you feel would help improve the service. Suggestion boxes can be found in both the day-care and inpatient units. All suggestions are handled in confidence. 19
