UM/Jackson Memoria Medica Center was ranked No. 6 in Forida and was recognized as high-performing in cancer, gastroenteroogy and GI surgery, nephroogy, neuroogy and neurosurgery, psychiatry, and uroogy. Hotz Chidren s Hospita at UM/Jackson has been ranked in six pediatric speciaties in the U.S. News Best Chidren s Hospita rankings, making it one of the nation s top medica centers for chidren: cardioogy and heart surgery (No. 40); diabetes and endocrinoogy (No. 45); gastroenteroogy and GI surgery (No. 22); neonatoogy (No. 32); nephroogy (No. 22); and uroogy (No. 38). 6 CONTINUING Goa by 2016: $1.6 biion $ 1.2 biion Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami By the end of 2013, the University of Miami raised $1.2 biion from more than 133,450 donors to Momentum2: The Breakthrough Campaign for the University of Miami. More than 40 endowed schoarships have been created through gifts to Momentum2 from donors who support student enrichment and success. More than 2,800 young aumni stepped up to support Momentum2 in FY13, a record eve of participation. Young aumni those who graduated within the ast ten years were caed to action by the GOLDStein Famiy Chaenge. Sean Godstein, a young aumnus, and his parents made a pedge to donate $35,000 toward schoarships if at east 2,400 young aumni made a gift by May 31, THE MOMENT UM

7 BREAKTHROU GH The Mier Schoo of Medicine cimbed to No. 38 in Nationa Institutes of Heath funding in 2012, soidifying its position as the top NIH-funded medica schoo in Forida. Mary Bartett Bunge, professor of ce bioogy, neuroogica surgery, and neuroogy at the Mier Schoo of Medicine s Miami Project to Cure Paraysis, was eected to the Nationa Academy of Sciences Institute of Medicine. In another remarkabe achievement, Bunge aso received a five-year renewa of NIH funding for her 39-year-od individua research grant. The Office of Nava Research awarded the Center for Southeastern Tropica Advanced Remote Sensing (CSTARS) a three-year, $16.5 miion contract to continue coecting, processing, and furnishing data from commercia sateites. Operated by the Rosenstie Schoo of Marine and Atmospheric Science, CSTARS radar images hep scientists understand oceanographic and terrestria processes and aid in humanitarian reief operations during natura and manmade disasters. The University instaed its first fuy research-dedicated functiona MRI (fmri) for human brain imaging. The fmri, ocated in the new Neuroscience Annex on the Cora Gabes campus, paces researchers from the Coege of Arts and Sciences and Mier Schoo of Medicine at the forefront of schoarship in brain function and neuroogica heath. Amishi Jha, associate professor of psychoogy in the Coege of Arts and Sciences, is using the University s new neuroscience fmri to expore how mindfuness training may hep the brain become more resiient, attentive, and happier. Jha s ab has received more than $3.5 miion in funding from the U.S. Department of Defense and donor support. Her artice on mindfuness training was the cover story for the March 2013 issue of Scientific Mind. The Coege of Engineering s new Fortinet CyberSecurity Lab, funded by the Caifornia-based Internet security provider Fortinet, is designing revoutionary ways to keep digita information safe. RESEARCH

8 ACCELERATING A record nine students from five UM schoos and coeges received Fubright schoarships to conduct research and teach during the academic year in eight different countries: Ecuador, Germany, Mexico, Maaysia, Poand, Sweden, Tanzania, and Waes. One of the Fubright recipients, Juan Pabo Ruiz, B.S.B.E. 13, aso was the first UM student to be awarded the prestigious NIH Oxford-Cambridge Schoarship and is a recipient of the Giiam Feowship for Advanced Study through the Howard Hughes Medica Institute. ACADEMICS The University aunched a new undergraduate curricuum caed the Cognates Program of Genera Education, which aows students to expore the University s array of schoos and coeges by choosing cognates (sets of at east three reated courses) that tap into their individua interests and career goas. The UM Debate Team, which won a nationa championship at the University of Forida in March, advanced to No. 8 in the 2013 Nationa Debate Tournament Rankings. UM hods court over more than 100 other schoos, incuding Northwestern, Harvard, Vanderbit, and Emory. For the second time in three years, the University of Miami won first pace at the highy competitive Nationa Student Advertising Competition, besting 17 other district-winning universities from around the country with a vibrant campaign for Gidden Paint at Wamart. Five UM students were seected as 2013 NOAA/Ernest F. Hoings Schoars, joining a group of 127 recipients from universities across the country who are interested in studying oceanic and atmospheric science, technoogy, and education. For the fourth time, the Schoo of Nursing and Heath Studies received a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation New Careers in Nursing grant, which supports ten Acceerated B.S.N. students in the academic year. Sonia Chao, director of the Schoo of Architecture s Center for Urban and Community Design, was awarded a major grant from the W.K. Keogg Foundation to conduct a community panning process in the commune of Arcahaie, Haiti, a region that may hod the potentia for sustainabe architecture and urbanism due to its distance from faut ines.

9 EXCLU S I VE EVENTS Two U.S. Supreme Court justices, Sonia Sotomayor and Anthony Kennedy, visited the University in February. In a conversation with UM President Donna E. Shaaa, Sotomayor tod poignant stories from her ife and book, My Beoved Word. Ten days ater, Kennedy deivered the Robert B. Coe Distinguished Jurist Lecture. During her March visit to the University of Miami, MSNBC host Rache Maddow addressed some of the topics in her new book, Drift: The Unmooring of American Miitary Power, and offered students advice on activism. Evoutionary bioogist Richard Dawkins in March shared with the UM community his thoughts on The Science of Beauty and the Beauty of Science. Famed primatoogist Jane Gooda, Hon 93, spoke to an audience of thousands in Apri about her groundbreaking studies of chimpanzees in Tanzania and the chaenges our panet faces in the future.

10 TRANSFORMING THE CAMPUS The University s continued evoution reached new heights in 2013 with the opening of four new buidings on the Cora Gabes campus the Student Activities Center, Schwartz Center for Athetic Exceence, Neuroscience Annex, and Toppe Career Center.

11 CONT D TRANSFORMING THE CAMPUS The Student Activities Center, made possibe through a ead $20 miion Momentum2 gift from the Fairhome Foundation, has become the foca point of student ife and the Student Center Compex, which aso comprises the Whitten University Center, UC Patio, Rock, Foote Green, and the poo aong Lake Osceoa. The Theodore G. Schwartz and Todd G. Schwartz Center for Athetic Exceence, named by father-and-son donors, is a mutipurpose buiding that is part of the Isadore Hecht Athetic Center and showcases enhanced footba faciities, incuding a footba ocker room, payers ounge, Gaery of Champions ceebrating the egacy of Hurricane Athetics, and a new academic center for student-athetes. The 37,000-square-foot Neuroscience Annex adjacent to the Cox Science Center is an interactive hub for interdiscipinary heath research based on neuroogica imaging. Funded by a $14.8 miion federa stimuus grant, the faciity houses a cooperative group of research personne from the psychoogy and bioogy departments, as we as other UM departments and the Mier Schoo of Medicine. The Patricia and Harod Toppe Career Center, made possibe by a generous gift from UM aumna and trustee Patricia Toppe, B.Ed. 58, M.Ed. 59, features innovative technoogy and space for entrepreneuria workshops and interview rooms. The 12,000-square-foot center doubes the amount of space from the origina Toppe Center. The Rosenstie Schoo of Marine and Atmospheric Science s Marine Technoogy and Life Sciences Seawater Compex, a faciity that wi enabe scientists to conduct research on cimate, marine animas, and the Earth s oceans, opens in spring Work aso continues on the Patricia Louise Frost Music Studios at the Frost Schoo of Music, providing cassroom, teaching, and practice space. Continuing its commitment to maintaining a safe and heathy Canes community, the University of Miami on August 1 adopted a tobacco-free poicy on the Cora Gabes campus. The Breathe Freey initiative is the resut of steps put forth by undergraduate Student Government, the Graduate Student Association, and the Student Bar Association.

12 ATHLETIC ACHIEVEMENTS The year was one of the most successfu in Miami Hurricanes history, with 15 of our 18 programs advancing to NCAA postseason pay. It was a championship year for men s basketba and women s tennis, with both teams cinching their first Atantic Coast Conference tite. The Internationa Tennis Association named women s tennis head coach Paige Yaroshuk-Tews Coach of the Year for the Southeast Region. Men s basketba head coach Jim Larrañaga cosed the season as ACC, Associated Press, Naismith, and Henry Iba Coach of the Year. He aso ed the team to its second Sweet 16 appearance in program history. According to the NCAA s Academic Progress Rate statistics, two teams women s gof and women s cross country earned perfect scores of 1,000. Every Hurricanes program registered an APR score of at east 945, and 38 studentathetes from 16 teams were seected for A-ACC Academic teams. Hurricane student-athetes recorded a Graduation Success Rate (GSR) of 92 percent, marking the ninth year the University of Miami has exceeded the NCAA average. Eight UM teams men s diving, gof, women s tennis, baseba, women s track and fied/cross country, rowing, women s swimming, and voeyba recorded GSR marks of 100 percent. Bake James was named director of athetics after serving as interim director since October Before joining the Hurricanes, James was director of athetics at the University of Maine. Miami Hurricanes sophomore efthander Chris Diaz earned one of 24 coveted roster spots on the USA Baseba Coegiate Nationa Team. He is the 22nd Hurricane to earn this honor, the second-most of any program in history.
