2 Welcome Greetings from Martin Luther King High School! We hope you are enjoying your summer. There are plenty of changes and lots of new faces at King. As the staff prepares for the upcoming school year the Guidance Department has put together the enclosed packet for all students (new to King and returning) to facilitate your registration. It includes information on registration dates, ASB card and combo packages, Life Touch Pictures, and ways to get involved for both parents and students. Each student will receive a comprehensive Student Handbook in September. Please make sure you review the contents with your student in order to become more familiar with school guidelines, procedures, activities, and any changes for the new year. For additional information and to keep up with everything that is going on at King High School, please check out our website at Once again please be sure that you review all the information included in the registration packet and that you bring all the required items. The Senior Photo is taken by appointment during SUMMER at Countryside Photography. If you have not received an appointment for your Senior Photo please call Countryside at Students not registering at their assigned time will be directed to wait until all students in the designated hour have been served before being allowed to register. Students participating in practices for KHS athletic or band practices may register from 8am 8:30am on their assigned day only if the practice conflicts with the student s registration time. Coaches and advisors must make arrangements in advance to ensure that there is adequate registration staffing. Be aware that California state law requires all students entering grades 7 through 12 to provide proof of having had the T-Dap whooping cough (pertussis) vaccine prior to the start of the school year. Students who do not have proof on file will not be permitted to start school. 13 Optional Form MARTIN LUTHER KING HIGH SCHOOL PARKING PERMIT APPLICATION Students are required to register every year any vehicle they intend to drive to school and park in the student lot. The student parking lot is located adjacent to building D. To receive a parking permit, students must be sixteen years of age, hold a valid California Drivers License, show current vehicle registration, and proof of vehicle insurance. Should students anticipate driving more than one vehicle they must register each vehicle separately, but will need to purchase only one parking permit. Parking on campus is considered a privilege and may be revoked if students violate the vehicle code set forth in the Parent/Student Handbook. When you apply for a school permit, please complete this form and attach a copy of your driver s license, vehicle registration, proof of insurance, and $7.00 and return it to the ASB room, G-106. All students will be required to display a Martin Luther King Parking Permit on the lower front side of the drivers window of their vehicle at all times. There will be a $7.00 replacement fee for lost parking permits. The fee will enable King s Student Services and Security Support to work with the Riverside Police Department in providing service beyond the school day to students and the community. 15 Martin Luther King High School School Site Council Optional Form Martin Luther King s School Site Council provides a forum for involvement and cooperation between school, home and community. The Council recommends, assesses and plans positive and systematic change at King High School. At the secondary level, the Council is composed of the principal, five teachers, four parent/community members, four students and two other school staff. We currently have four parent openings. If you are interested in serving a two-year term beginning September 2013 and ending June 2014, please complete the bottom portion of this form and turn it in at the Fish Bowl Office during registration. 23 Riverside Unified School District Acceptable Use Policy for Student Use of the Internet Students in Riverside Unified School District have access to technology to enhance their understanding of the curriculum. Prior to being allowed access to the Internet at school, students and their parents must sign the RUSD Acceptable Use Consent Form. The RUSD Acceptable Use Policy and Rules and Regulations list rules for use of the Internet and computer technology. If a student violates any of these rules, his/her use shall be terminated and future access may be denied. Disciplinary action may also result. If possible criminal activity is discovered, the proper authorities will be notified. Disciplinary action for students shall be in accordance with existing discipline policies and may include suspension or expulsion. 1.The Internet shall only be used to access educational information. Purchase of any items or services is not allowed through the district network. 2. Students shall not load personal software or programs on District computers nor shall they download programs from the Internet without the approval of their instructor. 3. Vandalism shall not be tolerated. 4. Although the district uses a filter to block inappropriate Internet sites and prohibits access to harmful matter [defined in Penal Code 313(a)] on the Internet which may be obscene or pornographic, some inappropriate material may appear. If this occurs, it is the responsibility of the student to report the inappropriate site to the supervising teacher, instructional assistant, or librarian. 5. Not all access to the Internet can be supervised. Students agree not to access, submit, publish, display, or print over the Internet/Intranet any defamatory, inaccurate, abusive, obscene, profane, sexually oriented, threatening, racially offensive or illegal material. 6. Students shall not use the Internet/Intranet to send any information that would threaten or offend others or promote any activity that is against the law or district policy. Appropriate language is to be used at all times. 7. Copyright laws must be followed. All materials from the Internet, including graphics, which are used in student projects or reports, must be properly cited. Copyrighted materials may not be placed on the Internet/Intranet without the permission of the author. 8. Riverside Unified School District denies any responsibility for the accuracy of information obtained from the Internet. 9. 26 Student Code of Conduct Important Information for Students and Parents Students at Martin Luther King High School are expected to be aware of and accept personal responsibility in the following areas: Forbidden or Illegal Activities Use, sale or possession of alcohol, drugs or related paraphernalia Smoking or possession of tobacco products Possession of any type of weapon including necklaces, chains, rings, and other jewelry that could be used as a weapon. This also includes possession of real or replica weapons or explosive devices Possession of inappropriate printed material that depicts vulgar, sexually suggestive, racist or violent subject matter Possession of matches, lighters or other incendiary devices Possession of inappropriate devices, toys or materials not intended for relevant educational purposes Fighting or instigation of an altercation Food or drink in classrooms or other non-food service areas Hazing Inappropriate display of affection Defiance of authority Possession of illegal advertisements (party flyers etc.) Forgery or cheating Use of obscene language or profanity Gambling or possession of cards, dice or other gambling paraphernalia Being off campus during the school day without written authorization Disruptive classroom or campus behavior Sexual harassment Possession of spray paint or marking pens Defacing or destruction of school property Use of Electronic Devices/Prohibited Items No pagers, play stations, electronic toys, or CD players are permitted to be on school grounds at any time. Students may only bring personal devices to campus in order to access their textbooks and assignments on them. Students found in possession of prohibited items shall be subject to regular school discipline procedures, including: assigned detention, referral to Saturday School, suspension and/or expulsion, for a violation of school rules as permitted by Education Code Section 48900(k). Parents and students are hereby notified that school staff assume no liability whatsoever for electronic devices brought on school grounds. In addition, school staff will not search for, investigate nor attempt to recover any such item that is lost, stolen or broken on school grounds. Cell phones must be off and put away during class time, unless used for instructional purposes. Jurisdiction The high school has the obligation to enforce the rules and regulations and to act on a violation at any school activity at any time including but not limited to: While on school grounds While going to or returning from school During or while going to or coming from any school-sponsored activity, both on and off campus During lunch period

27 Closed Campus Students may not leave campus once they arrive during the regular school day unless a parent/ guardian provides a written request. All students must sign out at the Attendance Office before leaving campus during school hours. Non-students are not allowed on campus without prior administrative approval. Medications All medications must be checked in and dispensed through and under direction of the health office. This includes all prescription medication as well as all over the counter medications such as aspirin, antihistamines and asthma inhalers. Whenever possible medications should be taken at home under supervision of a parent or guardian. Identification Cards All students are required to carry an official King identification card on their person at all times. Should a school staff member request to see a student s identification card, students are to comply immediately without question. It is essential that the school personnel have the ability to determine student identity in the event of accident or injury. District Regulations for Drugs, Alcohol, and Tobacco Riverside Unified School District has adopted strict policies toward drugs and alcohol. Possession, use, furnishing, selling, or transporting for sale of drugs and alcoholic beverages, controlled substances, or look-alike substances is against district and state rules and regulations. Consequences are as follows: Using or possessing alcohol or intoxicants of any kind First offense 5-day suspension Second offense recommendation for expulsion Furnishing, selling, or transporting intoxicants of any kind First offense 5-day suspension and recommendation for expulsion Possession or use of nicotine products First offense Saturday School Second offense 2-day suspension and parent/guardian notified School Resource Officer may issue a citation for these offenses Mandated Recommendation for Expulsion Any student who has committed any of the following violations while under school jurisdiction shall be immediately suspended and expelled for one calendar year. This expulsion is effective in all schools in the district and in the State of California. Possession of a fire arm Brandishing a knife Selling any drug Attempting/Committing sexual battery or assault Possession of an explosive Intentional Harassment Intentional harassment is defined as threats or intimidation directed against students or a group of students that is sufficiently severe or pervasive and disrupts class work, creates disorder, and invades the rights of that student or a group of students. Students are subject to suspension and/or expulsion for harassment when: other means of correction have failed to bring about proper conduct, if the student s presence causes a continuing danger to physical safety, or the student s presence threatens to disrupt the education process.

28 Student Dress Code As you prepare for the upcoming school year we offer the following shopping guidelines. Inappropriate Clothing: Students are expected to wear clothing that is appropriate for school. Garments that are a distraction to the educational environment are not permitted. Examples of inappropriate items include, but are not limited to the following: Bare mid-riff or bathing suit tops Halter, strapless or tube tops (tops must have two shoulder straps that connect the front to the back of the garment) See through clothing and tops with oversized neck or arm openings Low cut or revealing blouses or shirts (tops must have straps and considered within boundaries of good taste) Clothing not sufficient to conceal undergarments Sleeveless undershirts, muscle shirts Dresses, shorts and skirts too short to be considered within the bounds of good taste Pajama bottoms and/or bedroom slippers Clothing that the Riverside Police Department has identified, as current gang attire is restricted and cannot be worn on campus. Also, clothing that makes reference to drugs, sex, alcohol, tobacco products, violence, weapons, vulgarity, nudity, racial supremacy or other anti-social behavior is not permitted Undergarments: Undergarments are to be covered by outer garments at all times. Bras and muscle shirts are considered undergarments. Absence of undergarments is not permitted. Shoes: Shoes must be worn at all times. Bedroom slippers are not permitted. Clothing Fit and Style: Students must wear clothing that is appropriately sized. Pants must fit and are to be worn around the waist, and in such a manner that undergarments and/or shorts do not show. Sagging is not permitted. Hats and Other Headwear: Headwear may be worn in classrooms at teachers discretion. The school administration, at its discretion, may approve head coverings worn for medical or religious purposes. Inappropriate headwear will be confiscated and will only be returned to the parent or guardian. Jewelry and Accessories: Chains (wallet chains are not permitted), spiked necklaces, bracelets, rings, belt buckles or other dangerous objects or jewelry that can readily be used as a weapon may not be worn or carried. Clothing or accessories that are likely to provoke acts of violence, create a clear and present danger, disrupt instruction or incite students may not be worn. Bandanas, hairnets, do-rags, wave caps worn or carried, are not permitted. Sunglasses may not be worn indoors or in classrooms (prescribed Irlen filters excepted). Final approval of appropriate clothing is left to the discretion of the school administration. Fall sports practice begins Monday, August 12, Conditioning for Cross-Country begins July 15, Football begins Thursday, August 15. With 21 different sports, the head coaches of Varsity sports will develop criteria that must be met by each participant in order to receive a Varsity letter. In anticipation of the coming year, there are a number of requirements that must be met prior to athletic practice and competition: Each athlete must have a physical, which may be obtained from their family doctor or through the S.P.O.R.T. Clinic at 4444 Magnolia Avenue in Riverside at a cost of $30. Please call (951) for further information. Physicals are not provided by the high school. Each athlete must have proof of medical insurance provided to King High School before practice begins. Pacific Educators Insurance is available to students and coverage starts when Pacific Educators receives payment. The school does not provide insurance coverage. We ask that each athlete purchase an ASB card since athletic programs are ASB-funded. Equipment, uniforms, letters, awards, tournament fees and officials are examples of ASB support. The cost is only $50 for an ASB card. ASB cards and Athletic Clearance Packets can be purchased and returned at registration. See page 2 for registration dates. Academic eligibility: To be scholastically eligible, a student must have earned at least a 2.0 GPA during the grading period immediately preceding the quarter in which the activity is held. If the student fails to achieve the 2.0 GPA requirements at the end of any academic quarter, the student shall be academically ineligible until the next grading period indicating that the 2.0 GPA standards has been met. There is a possible probationary period for each student. Students must request the probationary waiver, have parents and coach agree and have documentation signed and approved. The student s GPA at the end of the 4th quarter or at the end of the summer session shall determine his/her eligibility for the 1st quarter of the school year. Receipt of the student s report card by the school shall determine the date of eligibility for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th quarters of the school year. This is determined by the Riverside Unified School District.

30 RIVERSIDE UNIFIED SCHOOL DISTRICT Educational Accountability Department June 3, 2013 CALIFORNIA HIGH SCHOOL EXIT EXAM (CAHSEE) Special Notice to Parents and Guardians Students in the class of 2006 and each succeeding graduating class must pass the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) to receive a high school diploma. Students take the CAHSEE for the first time in the spring of tenth grade. What the CAHSEE will cover. The exam is divided into two parts: (1) reading and writing and (2) mathematics. All questions on the test are based on the California State Board-adopted standards. Students must pass both parts to receive their high school diploma. Students also must meet the district s requirements for graduation (215 credits). The reading and writing test measures standards through grade 10. In reading, this covers vocabulary, comprehension, and analysis of informational and literary texts and in writing, it covers writing strategies, applications, and the conventions of standard English. The mathematics test covers standards through grade 8 and includes fundamental skills in mathematics as well as Algebra 1. Student Testing The CAHSEE will be given at the school site on the designated dates. Students will: receive results of the exam within eight weeks after testing is completed have opportunities to retake either part previously not passed receive additional instruction, if needed, in summer school CAHSEE Practice Tests Available on the Internet Students can print out practice tests for the California High School Exit Exam on the Internet.
