7 Circle 2510 S. Robinson December 18 th ? Momand Theaters, Inc Paramount-Publix, Joe Cooper & Warner Bros. Partnership 1940 * pcw & Standard Theaters Corp. Continental 5725 Mosteller Drive seats This theatre was demolished in All three Continental Theatres (Tulsa, OKC, Denver (still open)) were built by my grandfather R.L. Barton who owned Barton Theaters. It was his attempt to bring back audiences by providing a "classy" movie experience. My father served as the original manager for the first Continental in OKC and had to wear a Tuxedo eveny evening. The concession served juices not sodas and imported candy not popcorn to try and enhance the upper class experience. It was designed with state-ofthe-art equipment and featured a cinerama screen composed of hundreds of vertical strips of reflective material set on a curve to precisely reflect the picture onto the audience. I watched it being built and went to the grand opening. Cove 2321 W seats Cozy 8 N Main? seats Continental 7650 e Skelly ,000 seats One example of the kind of problems the Continental experienced was when they spent a lot of money booking and promoting an exclusive, reserved seat engagement of Julie Andrew's new big budget, road show attraction "STAR", at advanced prices. I was a high school student when I went to see this movie on opening night. Surprisingly there were only about a hundred people in attendance. One of the ushers told me advanced tickets sales were sluggish for every performance, and since the film had been promoted as reserved seating, no walk in trade was showing up. By the time the Continental got radio spots and newspaper ads out announcing open ticket sales at popular prices, word had spread that "STAR" was a stinker. Excet copies of this theatres were built in Oklahoma City and Denver,CO (still open, greatly expanded) 51
