3 Milan, 19 th May 2012 Dear reader, In the name of the MILMUN Association it is our pleasure to present you the MILMUN 2012 Conference Report. This document will provide you with all the relevant information collected during this year s MILMUN preparation and during the event itself. The Executive Committee, together with a devoted Secretariat and the support of the Association s Advisory Board, managed to attract more than 150 participants, with 25 different nationalities and representing 37 universities to Milan, Italy. This success would not have been possible without the continued strong support of our Patrons and Sponsors! As in previous years, we were honoured by the presence of world-class representatives of the academic and professional sectors relevant to this year s theme Reaching Sustainability and Empowerment through Education. Their input guaranteed energetic discussions in all committees and provoked interesting suggestions on how to solve some of today s most pressing global issues. We will provide you with a complete summary of the debate outcomes in our Annual Report later this year. We hope that our activities will continue to attract as many interested young professionals from all around the world in the future and look forward to the MILMUN 2013 conference. A Model United Nations (MUN) is an academic simulation of International Institutions, such as the United Nations and European Union, where the mainly student-level participants assume the role of a diplomat and represent a country other than their own nationality. The aim of this alternative education approach is to allow participants to familiarize themselves with the UN & EU system, investigate possible solutions to global issues and to research about another country s culture, economy and political positions. Background With its seventh edition in 2012, the Milan International MUN (MILMUN) conference is the longest lasting annual, university-level simulation of international institutions in Italy. It was first held in May 2006 and has since attracted more than 750 young academics with over 70 different nationalities and representing 133 universities from all over the world. 6
