Assessed exposure to dusts and metals from the handling of solid petroleum catalysts used in the processing of crude oils, and evaluated claims that these exposures may have caused mixed-dust pneumoconiosis and led to increased risk of future lung cancer in refinery workers. Page 4
5 Evaluated claims that nearby residents were exposed to styrene during installation of a cured-inplace pipe for rehabilitating a culvert, which allegedly caused adverse respiratory health effects and led to increased risk of future lung cancer. Assessed exposure and subsequent risks of mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis in building trades that handled or were around others that handled chrysotile asbestos-containing coatings, glues, mastics, and sealants. Evaluated claims that a paint manufacturer did not adequately warn a furniture company, whose manufacturing site was partially destroyed in a fire, that the paints being used were pyrophoric. Assessed whether or not it was plausible to be exposed to airborne concentrations of chrysotile asbestos while drilling finger holes into polyester and rubber bowling balls and evaluated claims that these exposures may have caused pericardial mesothelioma. Evaluated claims that exposure to chlorine gas that was inadvertently generated during mixing of phosphoric acid and bleach may have caused interstitial lung disease in a hospital custodian. This case also involved evaluating claims that the hospital and manufacturers of the cleaning products did not adequately warn on the potential hazards from mixing cleaning products. Assessed whether or not it was plausible to be exposed to airborne concentrations of chrysotile asbestos while manipulating finished products made out of Bakelite, and evaluated claims that these exposures may have cause mesothelioma, lung cancer, or asbestosis in electricians and other building trades. Exposure Science/Environmental Epidemiology Research Conducted several analyses on various exposure science issues relevant to epidemiology studies concerning exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields and adverse reproductive health. These issues included temporal variability of magnetic field exposures, relationship between physical activity and magnetic field exposure, and correlation of magnetic field exposures within male-female couples. Analyzed data collected from Mexican children and pregnant Puerto Rican women to estimate distributions of and identify demographic and lifestyle predictors of urinary levels of bisphenol A/phthalate metabolites and insecticides/herbicides, respectively. Performing data management and analysis for a multi-institutional, longitudinal epidemiology study of exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields and adverse reproductive health among couples recruited at a fertility clinic. Efforts include compiling reports, presenting recruitment data and preliminary analyses at scientific meetings, and publishing peer-reviewed papers. Performed a review and critique of the literature on potential relationship between exposure to power-frequency magnetic fields and adverse reproductive health outcomes in women and men. Page 5
6 Conducted several cross-sectional epidemiologic analyses of relationships between biomarkers of exposure to metals, organophosphate insecticides, and perfluoroalkyl substances and serum levels of various reproductive and thyroid-related hormones in men, women, and/or adolescents associated with the U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Environmental Health & Safety Conducted field-based industrial hygiene surveys to characterize noise exposures and inhalation exposures to various airborne chemical agents among workers during operations in the railroad, steel manufacturing, cement, and wood products industries. Conducted field-based industrial hygiene surveys to identify problems associated with welding fume exposures control strategies in shipyard confined spaces in Singapore. Performed field-based indoor air quality assessments in various residential and office buildings to investigate complaints of mold growth on building materials and to evaluate progress of mold remediation efforts. Provided on-site waste management assistance for a contact lens research & development and manufacturing facility to help maintain ISO certification, ensure regulatory compliance, and increase employee awareness. Efforts included walk-through audits of operations, tracking waste manifests, and performing employee training on waste management practices.
