2 ANTHROPOLOGY Programs Offered Min in Anthropology Anthropologists stress the holistic relationship between humans and their environment using culture as the ganizing theme. As such anthropologists study human biological igins and adaptations, as well as cultural adaptations. Although anthropology had its roots in studying hunting and gathering societies and agrarian ones, today anthropologists study modern industrial societies. Because of the ecological, holistic approaches anthropology provides a solid basis to understand the difficult choices facing modern humans, like overpopulation, dwindling resources, and environmental degradation and pollution. By using the knowledge and perspectives gained from many cultures, anthropology is in a position to offer great insight into solutions f the future. Anthropology is a key discipline contributing to multiculturalism, environmental studies, and globalization. Careers The anthropology program prepares students f graduate school in anthropology, careers in government service, consulting, international relations, the professions (law, medicine), and teaching social sciences. 3 APPLIED PHYSICS Programs Offered Bachel of Science in Applied Physics Emphasis in Technology Emphasis in Physical Sciences Min in Applied Physics Applied physics is the interface between science and technology, between the labaty and industrial practice. It applies the concepts and models of physics to practical technological applications. Applied physics is essentially an interdisciplinary undertaking, interacting with mathematics, computer science, engineering, the life sciences, medicine and other disciplines. Applied physicists use their understanding and skills at the new scientific and technological frontiers that are developing rapidly at the interface between me traditional disciplines, e.g. biophysics, biomedical engineering, bioinfmatics, materials science, and medical imaging. They have the flexibility to adapt to changing technological requirements and the ability to make meaningful contributions to modern, interdisciplinary investigations. Careers Graduates from the Bachel of Science in Applied Physics will receive an excellent preparation f securing professional employment in industry in the public sect. The Bachel of Science in Applied Physics with an Emphasis in Technology is designed to produce graduates with strong problem-solving, technical, industrial and management skills. This will enable them to obtain professional employment on graduation in research and development in industry in the public sect in, f example, electronics, semiconducts, medical technology and telecommunications. Through appropriate selection of electives, students can concentrate on selected areas within applied physics and pursue further study in graduate professional schools, f example in Experimental Physics, Computer Engineering, Materials Science, Biomedical Engineering, Medical Physics. The Bachel of Science in Applied Physics with an Emphasis in Physical Sciences is designed to provide students with a broad foundation in applied physics as part of a liberal education in the sciences. The program is particularly appropriate f students interested in such careers as teaching, public service, business, scientific equipment sales science journalism. It can serve as the depth and breadth of study necessary f securing a single Subject credential in Science f teaching at the high school and middle school level. The Applied Physics Min provides non-majs with the background in science and technology that is needed to pursue a career graduate study in an interdisciplinary field. Students majing in Mathematics Computer Science, in particular, should consider obtaining an Applied Physics min because of the considerable overlap with these fields. Program Learning Outcomes Students graduating from the Applied Physics program will be able to: Explain the fundamental concepts of physics; Analyze and solve problems by applying infmation in a novel context; Fmulate hypotheses and devise and perfm experiments to test hypotheses as individuals and in a team; Apply current technology and scientific methodologies to analyze and solve problems in various scientific, professional and community settings; Use and critically evaluate current technical/scientific research literature, online infmation, and infmation related to scientific issues in the mass media; Communicate in written and al fms key concepts in physics and general scientific issues with interested citizens and professionals; Wk co-operatively as part of a research team; and Learn independently and maintain life-long learning in the sciences and technology. Careers The Bachel of Science in Biology is designed f students who wish to enter medical, dental other health professional graduate schools, to seek careers in business, industry government. The Bachel of Science in Biology with an Emphasis in Cell and Molecular Biology offers students an opptunity to study the exciting developments in genetics, molecular biology, cloning, biotechnology and bioinfmatics. This program leads to careers in medical sciences, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, research and development, intellectual property and patent law. Bachel of Science in Biology with an Emphasis in Clinical Labaty Science prepares students f further clinical training and Califnia License Exam in Clinical Labaty Science f training and certification in Public Health Microbiology. The Bachel of Science in Biology with an Emphasis in Ecology, Evolution and Organismal Biology allows students to exple biodiversity at multiple levels of ganization, from molecules to the biosphere. Students will gain an understanding of the complex interactions among ganisms and between ganisms and their physical environments. The emphasis prepares students f environmental studies conservation, research, education. It also provides preparation f graduate study in biology. The Bachel of Science in Biology with an Emphasis in Medical Imaging prepares students f graduate professional study in the medical sciences (medical imaging, medical physics, health physics, dosimetry, nuclear medicine, radiotherapy, oncology, biomedical engineering), f entry into professional positions in the clinical environment and in medical imaging research and development. The Bachel of Arts degree is designed to obtain a general background in both the concepts and the technical skills of modern biology. Students completing the Bachel of Arts maj will find that their strong general background will allow them flexibility in both completing min fields of study and career choices. The degree prepares graduates f careers in medical and other health professions Emphasis in Pre- Professional Studies, science education Emphasis in Subject Matter Preparation in Teaching Biology, industry government (Emphasis in General Biology). Biology as a discipline has been rapidly advancing in the last decade. With the infmation derived from the sequencing of the genomes of many ganisms, it will have far-reaching impacts on the environment, public health, and on local, regional, and global economies. The Biology Min allows students in majs other than biology to gain an understanding of these exciting developments. It will provide a solid background in biology and the opptunity to exple selected area(s) at a greater depth. Equipped with a min in biology, students with a maj in other disciplines will have a greater understanding and knowledge of the latest advances in many areas of biology and will therefe be me versatile in their career paths. The requirement f a Min in Biology is 21 units. The Clinical Training Certificate Program in Clinical Labaty Science will be offered at several local hospitals partnering with CI which will lead to careers in clinical labaty science. Program Learning Outcomes Students graduating from the Biology program will be able to: Explain the basic structures and fundamental processes of life at molecular, cellular and ganismal levels; Identify the evolutionary processes that lead to adaptation and biological diversity; Describe the relationship between life fms and their environment and ecosystems; Collect, ganize, analyze, interpret and present quantitative and qualitative data and incpate them into the broader context of biological knowledge; Effectively apply current technology and scientific methodologies f problem solving; Find, select and evaluate various types of scientific infmation including primary research articles, mass media sources and wld-wide web infmation; and Communicate effectively in written and al fms.
