3 Dear Reader, Euroguidance Hungary started operating in Szeged in 2000 in the framework of the Leonardo da Vinci Programme of the European Commission. Presently it operates as a unit of the Public Employment Service and the National Office for Employment and Social Affairs and as a member of the international Euroguidance network of the European Union. Our main objectives are to support vocational guidance, life-long learning and international mobility as well as to promote language learning and employability. On our website, you can find lots of information on European education opportunities, higher education institutions, vocational trainings as well as data on the conditions of entering the tertiary education. This brochure provides useful information, tips and tricks for those who intend to study in Hungary. 4 National symbols Since 1990 Hungary is an independent democratic state. The form of state is republic; the official name of the country is Hungarian Republic. The capital city of Hungary is Budapest. Flag: The national flag of Hungary is the tricolour with three horizontal stripes: red, white and green and the historical coat of arms. Red: symbolizes strength White: symbolizes faithfulness The Hungarian coat of arm and flag Green: symbolizes hope. The role model of the Hungarian flag was the French tricolour and became very popular during the revolution of 1848/49. Since 20 August 2000 the flag has to be used on official buildings. The Hungarian crown The Hungarian crown: The Hungarian crown was given to Saint Stephen, the first Hungarian king on the occasion of his coronation in It is the oldest crown in Europe. The national anthem: the lyrics of national anthem of Hungary were written by Ferenc Kölcsey and its music was composed by Ferenc Erkel in the 19th century. The anthem refers to the most important historical events of the country and is played at various events. The poem and song titled Szózat can be considered as a second national anthem of Hungary. The poem was written by Mihály Vörösmarty while Béni Egressy composed the music to it. Szózat is sung at the end of the various ceremonies. The Hungarian coat of arms: The national coat of arms consists of the crown of St. Stephen, the state-founder king and the silvers stripes are said to represent the four rivers (Duna, Tisza, Dráva and Száva) while the hills are said to represent the three mountains (Mátra, Tátra, Fátra) but this theory is not historically founded. Further medical treatment depends on the person s insurance. Since 15 February 2007 it is obligatory to pay a visit-charge at the doctors. The common European Health Insurance Card replaces the following forms: E111, E110, E109 and E128. The EHIC entitles EU citizens to reduced medical costs on the territory of the European Union, Switzerland and the European Economic Area. The quickest and easiest way to get an EHIC is to apply online; the card is valid for 3 to 5 years and patient will be treated on the same basis as the citizens living in the visited country. 3
6 Residents of Non-EU countries: Non-EU member states residents will be treated on the basis of the various bilateral socio-political or medical-care agreements. Socio-political agreements: with Serbia and Montenegro, Croatia, Macedonia, CIS except for the Baltic states Citizens of these countries are provided with emergency care and treatment free of charge in Hungary. The treatment is limited to emergency health care. Medical-care cooperation agreements: with Sweden, Finland, Norway, Jordan, Kuwait, Angola, Iraq, Mongolia, South Korea, Cuba. Citizens of these countries are entitled to thorough medical treatment including emergency health care. In case of medical help they are required to produce a proof of identity proving that they are entitled to such service by law. Telephoning in Hungary Telephone: The international access code for Hungary is +36. The outgoing code is 00 followed by the relevant country code (eg to the United States of America). Usually the places that accept credit cards mark it on the door. Money exchange can be done in banks, travel agencies, or at the various exchange offices in the main shopping areas. Giving tips is very common in Hungary. Tips are given in restaurants, in cabs and at the various services; tips should be 10% of the costs of the services, but only if you are satisfied with it. 8 Public Transport in Hungary Hungary has an extensive public transport system, particularly in the capital. The domestic fares are well under the European average. Travelling inside the country: By train: The centre of the railway system is the capital, Budapest. The city has three main railway stations, Southern, Eastern and Western Stations. There are scheduled intercity and express lines to all the main cities and towns of Hungary. For further information, check the schedule of the Hungarian State Railway: By bus: Hungary has a very well developed bus network, with which you can reach any part of the country. Budapest has three main Bus stations: Erzsébet tér bus terminal - Direction Western-Hungary Népstadion bus terminal - Direction Eastern-Hungary Árpád híd bus terminal - Direction Danube-bend The local bus transportation is also extensive in most towns. Buses run usually from early morning until late in the evening. There are also some bus lines travelling 24/7 in Budapest. For further information, check the schedule of VOLÁN, the Hungarian bus system: City public transportation: The public transportation of the cities is well developed. In the main cities of the country (Budapest, Debrecen, Szeged, Miskolc) there are buses, trolleys and trams that provide convenient and rapid transport inside the towns. In Budapest you can also use the underground and HÉV (suburban railway). By plane The main airport of Hungary is Ferihegy which has two terminals (Ferihegy 1 and Ferihegy 2A and 2b). Beside Ferihegy Airport there are altogether 19 smaller airport borders in Hungary. These airports welcome flights from other cities of Hungary, but the price of this type of travelling is quite high in Hungary. 6
