Khan, MD, MPH, PhD Department of Biomedical Informatics 3189 Graves Hall 333 W. 10th Avenue Columbus, OH (614) yosef.khan@osumc.edu Office Hours: nesday 11 am 12:30 pm 3189 Graves Hall D. Required Textbook O Carroll, Yasnoff, Ward, Ripp, Martin. Public Health Informatics and Information Systems. London: Springer, E. Rationale and Overview The goal of this course is to introduce students to the emerging and interdisciplinary field of Public Health Informatics. Informatics is in integral part to the foundations and success of public health initiatives and policies, and is utilized in a unique and critical way to enhance public health goals. This course will examine the wide use and scope of informatics in the field of public health and allow students to focus on the core competencies of public health informatics, and really examine how informatics is used in the realm of public health. It is meant to be an awakening to realize how the two fields of informatics and public health are vital to each other. The fundamental public health theories of environmental health, health behavior and health promotion, and epidemiology will be discussed in the context of how informatics can be applied to these areas to enhance their experiences, methods, and tools and ultimately achieve their goals. Other topics will include the use of GIS in enhancing epidemiological surveillance,

2 informatics use in disaster relief efforts, informatics use in public safety and hospital communications, and the use of health information exchanges for public heath purposes. Students will be expected to complete a course project, the details for which will be posted to the Carmen site by Week 3. F. Course Objective and Learning Goals The objectives of this course are to provide students with an understanding of the broad scope of the field of Public Health informatics, and to come to a realization that the two fields of informatics and public health are very much intertwined with each other. Key challenges and opportunities in the applied use of informatics to public health will be highlighted. In addition to discussing the core competencies of public health informatics and specific genres of public health, the role of strategic stakeholders in public health will be discussed to gain insight on how applied informatics principles, methods and tools can enhance the goals of public health workers and agencies. At the completion of the course, students will be able to: 1. Describe the mission and practice of public health and identify opportunities to advance public health using informatics methods and tools. 2. Explain fundamental informatics principles and their application to public health. 3. Describe current and evolving public health surveillance systems. 4. Explain the current and evolving relationship between clinical and public health systems, including needs, challenges, and opportunities. 5. Describe the impact of informatics on public health. 6. Describe public health workforce and how informatics can be utilized to enhance their experiences. G. Prerequisites and Requirements 1. Graduate student status. 2. Prior course work or understanding of Biomedical Informatics or Clinical research Informatics principles, methods and tools.

3 H. Grading Students will be evaluated based upon four weighted axes, as summarized in the table below: Graded Item Class Participation Assignments Course Project (details will be posted to Carmen) Final Presentation Contribution to Overall Grade 15% 25% 40% 20% Letter grades will be assigned using the following criteria (using a 100- point scale, based upon the preceding weighted axes): = A; = A- ; = B+; = B, = B- ; 79-78= C = C; = C- ; = D; < 60 = Fail. I. Accommodation for special needs: If you need an accommodation based on the impact of a disability, you should contact me to arrange an appointment as soon as possible. At the appointment we can discuss the course format, anticipate your needs and explore potential accommodations. I rely on the Office for Disability Services for assistance in verifying the need for accommodations and developing accommodation strategies. If you believe you need accommodation and have not previously contacted the Office for Disability Services, I encourage you to do so (more information available at state.edu/). J. Academic integrity Academic integrity is essential to maintaining an environment that fosters excellence in teaching, research, and other educational and scholarly activities. Thus, The Ohio State University, the College of Public Health, and the Committee on Academic Misconduct (COAM) expect that all students have read and understood the University s Code of Student Conduct and the College s Student Handbook, and that all students will complete all academic and scholarly assignments with fairness and honesty. The Code of Student Conduct and other information on academic integrity and academic misconduct can be found at the COAM web pages ( Students must recognize that failure to follow the rules and guidelines established in the University s Code of Student Conduct, the Student Handbook, and in the syllabi for their courses may constitute Academic Misconduct. The Ohio State University s Code of Student Conduct (Section ) defines academic misconduct as: Any activity that tends to compromise the academic integrity of the University, or subvert the educational process. Examples of academic misconduct include (but are not limited to) plagiarism, collusion (unauthorized collaboration), copying the work of another student, and possession of unauthorized

4 materials during an examination. Please note that the use of material from the Internet without appropriate acknowledgement and complete citation is plagiarism just as it would be if the source were printed material. Further examples are found in the Student Handbook. Ignorance of the Code of Student Conduct and the Student Handbook is never considered an excuse for academic misconduct. If I suspect a student of academic misconduct in a course, I am obligated by University Rules to report these suspicions to the University s Committee on Academic Misconduct. If COAM determines that the student has violated the University s Code of Student Conduct (i.e., committed academic misconduct), the sanctions for the misconduct could include a failing grade in the course and suspension or dismissal from the University. If you have any questions about the above policy or what constitutes academic misconduct in this course, please contact me. K.
