Course Rationale The purpose of this course is to provide a foundation of legal knowledge for students to apply to the sport industry and opportunities for students to engage with the legal information through assignments and examinations. Course Description Areas of study include, but are not limited to, negligence law, intentional torts and criminal acts, risk management, contract law, constitutional law, and sport and legislation. Attendance/Participation The quality of the course is largely dependent on the contribution of students present. Missing class will negatively affect your evaluation, as you will be unable to contribute to the class due to your absence. Individual classroom participation will be monitored throughout the semester and can impact the attendance/participation grade. 2. Legal Analysis Assignment Students will pick a sports law issue and will write a short paper (approximately 5 pages) briefly summarizing the issue and the history of same and will propose solutions or augmentations to existing legislation. Students will briefly present their issue in class. Presentations will be expected to last 3-5 minutes. An additional handout will be provided at a later date. 3. Exams There will be two exams in this course. The Midterm Exam will consist of an in-class and take home examination, whereas the Final Exam will be strictly in-class. The in-class Autumn 2015 Page 3

7 midterm exam will test students understanding of concepts through Multiple Choice, True/False, and Fill in the Blank questions. The take-home midterm exam will consist of critical thinking and reflection through short answer/essay questions. The final exam will contain multiple choice, True/False, and fill in the blank questions as well as critical thinking and short answer/essay questions. Classroom Policies 1. Attendance / Participation Students are expected to attend class. Students should listen attentively while in class and demonstrate respect for the learning environment. A student s presence is indicative of their professional attitude and is necessary to derive maximal benefit from the class. The intent of this class is to offer students a means for professional development, assist students in obtaining their career objectives, and provide a foundation of legal knowledge to assist decision making. Students are expected to be fully prepared for class and fully engaged while in class. Students are expected to have read all assigned readings, take notes as applicable, and come prepared and willing to discuss all readings in detail and take part in group work to the fullest extent. All cell phones must be on silent and stowed away. Students should not have their cell phone on their desk; it is distracting to both the instructor and fellow students. If a student must take an emergency phone call during class, please step outside to answer the phone. Students are permitted to use laptops or ipads to follow the lecture; however such devices should not be used for anything unrelated to the class lecture. 2. Excused Absences There are four situations, which constitute an excused absence from the class meeting time. They are: 1) Students who participate in a documented University sanctioned event. 2) Students who have a documented death in the family. 3) Students who are observing a religious holiday. 4) Students who are too ill or injured to participate in class. In accordance with Faculty Rule , students who will be participating in University sanctioned events must provide the instructor with a copy of the scheduled events and those classes which will be missed. This documentation must be typed on University letterhead, signed by the coach/supervisor, and given to the instructor within the first two weeks of the semester. Students who will be observing a religious holiday must provide date/event written notification to the instructor within the first two weeks of the semester. Students who are too ill or injured to attend class must provide written documentation from a physician stating that the student will not be able to attend class. Students who are observing a death in the family are excused from 1 class. 3. Tardiness Autumn 2015 Page 4

8 Students should be on time and stay for the whole class. Any student who arrives greater than 10 minutes late or leaves greater than 10 minutes early will be marked as absent. If you arrive after class has started, please be respectful of the learning environment and find your seat quietly. 4. Extenuating Circumstances If a student anticipates an absence due to extenuating circumstances, they will have the opportunity to appeal in advance of the absence by communicating the extenuating circumstances to the instructor during the first week of the semester and providing written documentation to verify the excuse. Outcome of the appeal will be up to the discretion of the instructor. 5. Assignments Students are expected to exert effort in their work, complete assignments on their own (apart from group assignments), and submit all assignments on time. I expect students to advise me if they will miss class. Assignment rubrics will be available on Carmen that breakdown the expected criteria and corresponding evaluation points. Any work missed due to an unexcused absence may not be made up. All late assignments result in a 10% penalty per day (not class day, every day). Academic Misconduct The Ohio State University s Code of Student Conduct (Section ) defines academic misconduct as: Any activity that tends to compromise the academic integrity of the University, or subvert the educational process. Examples of academic misconduct include (but are not limited to) plagiarism, collusion (unauthorized collaboration), copying the work of another student, and possession of unauthorized materials during an examination. Ignorance of the University s Code of Student Conduct is never considered an excuse for academic misconduct. If I suspect that a student has committed academic misconduct in this course, I am obligated by University Rules to report my suspicions to the Committee on Academic Misconduct. If COAM determines that you have violated the University s Code of Student Conduct (i.e., committed academic misconduct), the sanctions for the misconduct could include a failing grade in this course and suspension or dismissal from the University. Technology The use of Carmen is employed in this course for receiving the syllabus, course materials, assignment distribution and submission, and communication (via Carmen ).
