2 The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, founded in 1959, is an independent, nonprofit, scientific, and educational organization dedicated to reducing the losses deaths, injuries, and property damage from crashes on the nation s roads. The Highway Loss Data Institute, founded in 1972, shares and supports this mission through scientific studies of insurance data representing the human and economic losses resulting from the ownership and operation of different types of vehicles and by publishing insurance loss results by vehicle make and model. Both organizations are wholly supported by auto insurers.

8 People drive more safely because of IIHS research Click It or Ticket campaigns, pioneered by IIHS, increase safety belt use Studies of graduated licensing have greatly improved teen licensing laws and continue to drive further improvement Research showing that automated enforcement reduces speeding and red light running has led more communities to adopt speed cameras and red light cameras Research on alcohol-impaired driving has been instrumental in maintaining the alcohol purchase age of 21 and in supporting recent initiatives for alcohol interlocks for all drivers convicted of a DUI or DWI offense
