4 To My House Of Hope Atlanta Family, It is with divine love that I greet you! Amazement overwhelms me when I reflect on the immeasurable favor of God! We are continually sustained by His divine power and protection! To Jehovah alone be all glory, honor and praise! Exactly one year ago, my expectations were clear that 2016 would be a legendary year. Although my anticipation was primarily concerning incredible opportunities that I was envisioning, multiple deaths in January cemented that 2016 would be absolutely unforgettable! Though 2016 has been the most difficult year of my entire life, Jesus words regarding the prerequisite of a seed falling to the ground, dying, being buried and inevitably producing fruit, lifted me from the doldrums and renewed my strength. This year taught me much about SEED and I m the better for it! As we have endeavored to truly be Kingdom Citizens this year, I stand in awe of the spiritual growth that has taken place in us corporately and in many of us individually! The testimonies and praise reports about how the messages and ministries that emanated from our church this year have empowered me in unfathomable ways! The support, love and commitment of many of our members puts wind beneath my wings and makes me want to do more and grow stronger! The global mandate that God has placed on my life and this ministry cannot be reached without trusted leadership and support! I m eternally grateful to God for allowing my son-in-ministry, Pastor Nathaniel Stewart to serve us with such professionalism and faithfulness. The work that Pastor Stewart and Deacon Ron Clemons consistently provide will position this church for unimaginable heights! God be praised for these men of God! In closing, 2017 will be The Year of T.I.M.E.! We are determined to Transform, Impact, Minister and Equip all who are in covenant with our church! We anticipate total victory in every area of our lives and will not accept anything less than God s best for our lives and our ministry! Please re-commit yourselves to our mission and always remember, if you will be good to God then God will be good to you! Consumed By The Call, E. Dewey Smith, Jr. Senior Pastor/Teacher 4
5 OUR CHURCH The House of Hope Atlanta (The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church) is located in South DeKalb County in Decatur, Georgia. It is a body of baptized believers united as instructed by scripture: You were all called to travel on the same road and in the same direction, so stay together, both outwardly and inwardly. You have one Master, one faith, one baptism, one God and Father of all, who rules over all, works through all, and is present in all. Ephesians 4:4-6 (MSG) The vision of this ministry is to help people come to the realization that life with God is better in every way, every day. #LIVEBETTER. The church is under the leadership of Dr. E. Dewey Smith, Jr., a renowned man of God and a prolific preacher of His Word. Some noteworthy facts about this ministry are: The church was awarded the Darkness to Light Partner in Prevention TM distinction for the year due to its efforts to prevent and respond to child sexual abuse. Total active membership of more than 14,917 representing five generations*: o 3% (448) Builders (born before 1946) o 19% (2,768) Boomers (born between ) o 36% (5,430) Busters (born between ) o 34% (5,078) Bridgers (born between ) o 5% (799) Blossoms (born 2004 and later) The church made the 2014 Top 100 Fastest-growing and largest churches in America according to Outreach magazine. Dr. E. Dewey Smith, Jr., was named the 2007 Most Inspirational Person of The Year and the 2006 Up and Coming Broadcaster of The Year by viewers of the StreamingFaith.com Community. Received Qualified Audits (The most complete type) of our financial position from an independent audit firm each year since Television broadcasts, Internet webcasts, social networking websites and publications are some of the media used in our local and global ministry outreach. In October 2015, Dr. E. Dewey Smith, Jr., ministered to over 5,000 women in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, at the Prophesying to the Nations Ministry Conference. *Age data unavailable for approximately 3% of the membership. 6 The House of Hope (The Greater Travelers Rest Baptist Church) had its beginnings in a little house that was used as a rest house during the Civil War. Under the leadership of the first pastor, Rev. Sam Stinson, the fellowship was formed by a Sunday School and prayer meeting group and was later orgeorgianized in Atlanta, Georgia, in May 1876, by Rev. William Tillman. In 1920, the church building was destroyed by fire. Rev. T. T. Gholston led an effort to purchase land for a new building and in 1923, a house of worship was erected at 119 Mason Avenue, N.E. in Atlanta, Georgia. Eleven years later, in 1934, the church was rebuilt under the leadership of Rev. J. W. Tate. The core of our history lies in the Edgewood Community, for it was there on Mayson Avenue that the church stood for many years. Some of our noted pastors include Rev. T. T. Gholston, Dr. Martin L. King, Sr., Dr. Sandy F. Ray, Dr. J. W. Tate, and Rev. Hubert Floyd Shepherd. OUR HISTORY and in March 1994, a ground-breaking service was held to mark the start of construction on a new building. Two years later, in September 1996, a new 2,200-seat sanctuary and building was dedicated at 2600 Whites Mill East (later renamed H. F. Shepherd Drive) in Decatur, Georgia. On March 26, 2003, Rev. H. F. Shepherd retired as pastor. In November 2003, God sent a Spirit-filled man in the person of E. Dewey Smith, Jr., and on December 21, 2003, he was installed as the 22nd pastor of the church. Under Dr. Smith s leadership, the church has grown phenomenally in membership, attendance, and finances. Additionally, a myriad of capital improvements and enhancements have been made. By Dr. Smith s fifth year as pastor, the membership had quadrupled and today is nearing 15,000. In 2009, the ministry purchased and relocated to a new campus. Located on 60 acres of land, the property has more than 300,000 square feet of space in seven buildings, and features a 7,000-seat neo-gothic cathedral. With this acquisition, the church is well-positioned for expansion and Kingdom building opportunities. Rev. H. F. Shepherd was extended the call to pastor the church in October The church s membership flourished in the Edgewood community of Atlanta, Georgia so much so that in December 1973 the ministry moved to 2589 Tilson Road in Decatur, Georgia. Greater Travelers Rest continued to grow Surnamed The House of Hope, the church offers hope to those desiring a respite from the trials and tribulations of life and guidance to those earnestly seeking a relationship with Jesus Christ. The church welcomes those in metro Atlanta and beyond to worship God, share the gospel of Jesus Christ with others, and execute the business of the Kingdom with excellence. 6

8 2016 Information System Accomplishments The Information Systems Department (ISD) supports the overall mission of the HOHA and its ministries on an ongoing basis as the church provides support to its staff, members and the community. In 2016, we continued that support in several areas that included: First time ing of year-end parishioner contribution statements Maintaining and improving the HOHA WiFi, server and database Installing and updating computers and printers Providing help desk services for all server, telephone, computer and database related challenges encountered by HOHA staff and ministry leaders. In addition to providing comprehensive technical assistance to HOHA staff, the ISD provided support and training to Worship and Arts, Hope Student Ministries (HSM), Marriage, Life University, Media and Assimilation Pastor Ministries. We implemented a new check-in system for Hope Kidz ministries beginning with an online registration which connected kids to their parent s household. Student information was gathered to identify allergies, health and custodial situations and the gathering of cell phone numbers so parents can be texted if needed. Volunteers were trained on the new check-in procedures and process to ensure correct information was entered into the database, student attendance captured, and student and parent information could be updated. Computers and printers were configured to allow label printing with check-in and out labels to improve child identification and security during check-out. The additional computer stations allowed for Hope Kidz to implement multiple check-in in the cathedral, nursery and the Edgewood center. Approval was also obtained for Phase I of Fiber Optics implementation to solve worship service streaming challenges on Wednesdays and Sundays, increase internet speed in our Administrative buildings and replace the existing server with one that will be cloud based. 8
9 STARTING POINT An important aspect of membership development is to fully assimilate new members into The House of Hope Atlanta. Once an individual responds to the invitation to Christian discipleship, he/she embarks upon a 10-week Spiritual Bootcamp Orientation that incorporates Christian foundational teaching and culminates with a graduation ceremony. New Member s Starting Point orientation provides New Members with the ability to fulfill their requirements to become members of the church. New Members also learn the Life University pathway for community. The Link provides the opportunity to complete the additional membership requirement of selecting a ministry to attend. As of October 2016, 419 adults have successfully completed Spiritual Bootcamp Orientation this year. 9
