Fnancal Modelng Notes Basc Excel Fnancal Functons Professor Iordans Karagannds
Excel Functons Excel Functons are preformatted formulas that allow you to perform arthmetc and other operatons very quckly and convenently There are more than 300 functons n excel, n 9 major categores Can combne more than one functons together You can be qute good knowng around 50 or so You can also buld your own functons n Vsual Basc for Applcatons (VBA) - Later
How to nsert an excel functon Clck on the fx con on the formula bar Sl Select a functon from the formulas menu: Type drectly n the excel cell the = sgn followed by the functon name
Future Value (FV) Functon Calculates the future value of a sngle cash flow or a seres of equal cash flows (annutes). FV PV 1 FV Sngle Cash Flow Annuty PV 1 N N 1 perodc nterest rate, N number of perods
Present Value (PV) Functon Calculates the present value of a future cash flow or a seres of equal future cash flows (annutes PV FV 1 PV Sngle Cash Flow Annuty 1 FV 1 N N perodc nterest rate, N number of perods
Other Smlar Fnancal Functons PMT Functon Solves for the annuty PMT that s equvalent to a sngle future of present cash flow NPER Functon Solves for the number of perods RATE Functon Solves for the nterest rate Notes on fnancal functons For some of them you need to nput cash flows as negatve f you want the output to be a postve number Can use the functon when you have non-annual compoundng but you have to make sure that all varables (number of perods, nterest rate, etc.) refer to the same tme perod (year, month, quarter etc.)
The NPV Functon n Excel Used to fnd the Present Value of a seres of uneven cash flows. (we are gong to use ths functon a lot!!!) Two major nputs: a) nterest rate, b)seres of cash flows Accepts up to 254 cash flows You can nput cash flow one by one or as a range or cells Cash flows have to be sequental Cash flows can be negatve or zero The NPV Functon calculates the present value of all the seres of cash flows entered, one perod pror to the occurrence of the frst cash flow NPV Functon does not correspond to the standard use of the term Net Present Value
The IRR Functon n Excel Calculates the nternal rate of return (IRR) One major nput: seres of cash flows Cash flow must be selected as a range Frst cash flow has to be negatve Cash flows have to be sequental Cash flows can be negatve or zero The IRR s the rate of return that makes the Net Present Value equal to zero. IRR Functon does correspond to the standard use of the term Internal Rate of Return
The XNPV and XIRR Functons What happens f cash flow do not occur n fxed tme ntervals? use the XNPV and XIRR functons Smlar to the NPV and IRR functons, however there are some dfferences Input both cash flows and the specfc dates the cash flows occur (dates do not need to be at even ntervals) The XNPV functon calculates the present value of all cash flows at the tme of the frst cash flow and not one perod pror to the frst cash flow as NPV functon does The XIRR functons outputs an annualzed return XIRR=(1+DalyIRR) 365-1
Other Functons to Know Logcal: IF, TRUE, FALSE, AND, OR Math: INT, MOD, ROUND, SUM, SUMIF Statstcal: AVERAGE, COUNT, COUNTA, MIN, MAX Lookup and Reference: CHOOSE, HLOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, OFFSET, VLOOKUP Date and Tme: DATE, DAY, MONTH, NOW, YEAR Informaton: ISERROR, ISNUMBER, ISTEXT, ISBLANK Text: LEFT, LEN, MID, RIGHT
More Advanced Functons to know Math and Trgonometry: ABS, CAILING, FLOOR, ROUNDUP, ROUNDDOWN, SUMIF, SUMPRODUCT Statstcal: COUNTIF Lookup and Reference: INDIRECT Date and Tme: DAYS360 Text Functons: LOWER, PROPER, TEXT, TRIM, UPPER, VALUE Fnancal Functons: XIRR, XNPV
