Petroleum Geo-Services Type of site: Data centre Location: Weybridge, Surrey Ashley Shopping Centre Type of site: Shopping centre Location: Epsom, Surrey Efficient cooling system of data centre designed for 1MW computer processing load. Efficient air containment system. Passive infra-red (PIR) lighting to ensure lights switch off when area is not occupied. Passive ventilation - a simple but effective building design uses doors and ceiling vents to draw fresh air into the centre. LED lighting is being fitted in place of old spot lights and fluorescent tubes. These not only save energy, but have a longer life expectancy of between 5 to 10 years. Cooling system now installed has reduced annual power consumption by 15.8 million kw-h which equates to a reduction in emissions of 6.8 million kgco2 per year. The passive ventilation system has produced such consistent and large energy savings over the years, that the management company is able to maintain service charges at 30% lower than the national average (at 4.50/sq ft compared to 6/sq ft). The lighting is estimated to pay back within 3 years, through energy savings and avoiding purchasing replacement fittings.

Harlequin Theatre Type of site: Theatre and car park Location: Redhill, Surrey iguzzini Type of site: Office and product showroom Location: Guildford, Surrey Efficient lighting using LED striplights have replaced T8 fluorescent tubes Theatre foyer and corridors has 'warm white' and 'pure white' Car park uses 'cool white' LEDs Frosted tubes uses to diffuse light. Showroom featuring a wide range of products including new energy efficient designs for a range of indoor and outdoor settings. Building designed to make optimum use of natural light to reduce energy demand from artificial lighting and reducing glare and excess summer heating Outdoor lighting designs to reduce light pollution and energy wastage The lighting upgrade is estimated to reduce annual lighting power consumption by 60% reduction. Total power consumption at the site has reduced from 310kWh to 180kWh per day. Modern efficient lighting has many advantages over older standard fittings such as T8 and T12 fluorescent tubes, including reducing power demand up to 60%, providing improved clarity with whiter light. Lower Operating Costs

Leatherhead Leisure Centre Type of site: Leisure centre with swimming pool Location: Leatherhead, Surrey SAV Systems Type of site: Factory and office Location: Woking, Surrey Gas fuelled combined heat and power (CHP) system supplies electricity and heating to swimming pool and rest of leisure centre building Under floor heating Pool covers to prevent heat losses from water when pool is not in use. Gas fuelled combined heat and power (CHP) system generating 15kW of electricity and 30kW heat. Variable speed pumping for efficient heat distribution Heat interface unit for efficient and instant hot water Smart metering of subdivisions of building zones The building refurbishment has been recently completed and data is not yet available for the impact of the energy features. Healthier Indoor Environment 40% energy cost and carbon savings has been achieved at this site, due to the installation of the additional heat distribution and energy monitoring systems. Increased Environmental Awareness

Birtley House Nursing Home Type of site: Nursing home Location: Bramley, nr Guildford, Surrey Coulsdon Audi Type of site: Car showroom Location: Coulsdon Woodchip fuelled 150kW boiler, in operation since 2008 Woodchip is supplied from the nearby Albury Estate and the site also uses a small amount of wood from its own woodlands across its 48 acre site. Biomass boiler feeds into heating system across sites including care homes and independent living apartments. 12% of site energy requirements from renewable energy Intelligent lighting with motion and daylight detection to maintain optimum lighting levels Biomass boiler using wood pellets for heating and hot water Cooling provided by gas converted air conditioning Rainwater harvesting collecting water from roof, instead of using water from the mains water network. By working closely with local estates, the wood chip is supplied at a price cheaper than the gas it has replaced. Biomass boiler should prove a more cost effective heating system. BREEAM Excellent rating 12% of site energy demand is generated by renewable energy which exceeds the 10% level that was required to be granted planning permission.

Guildford Borough Council Type of site: Office Location: Guildford, Surrey High Ashurst Outdoor Learning Centre Type of site: Outdoor Education Centre Location: near Dorking, Surrey Biomass boiler (250kW) for heating and hot water. Wood chip is currently used but the council has plans to switch to wood pellets. Motion sensor controls for energy efficient lighting Timer controls on hot water urns in office kitchens to reduce wastage of energy Wood pellet boiler system of two Broag boilers rated at 140KW each Heat distribution network of insulated underground pipes (pipes not viewable, but buildings served are) It has been projected to save between 230 and 300 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, because the biomass fuel is carbon neutral. The wood pellet boilers replaced an oil boiler and the new system is already achieving fuel savings. Lower Operating Costs

Ashley Primary School Type of site: Primary School Location: Walton-on-Thames, Surrey Mayford Grange Retirement village Type of site: Retirement village and Nursing home Location: Woking, Surrey Electricity consumption monitoring Carbon Countdown challenge to keep school electricity consumption under 100kWh of electricity per week Natural lighting using solar tubes to bring natural light into centre of building Efficiency measures including energy efficient lighting, light and motion sensors and double glazing Solar thermal evacuated tubes for hot water Solar photovoltaic (PV) electricity panels and a recently installed solar PV membrane 35KW biomass boiler for space heating Solar photovoltaic (PV) panels Modular gas combined heat and power (CHP) system, which is currently providing heating, hot water and electricity to the communal areas and will be linked to the Nursing home. 51% reduction in electricity use and 18% reduction in gas use comparing 2007 before measures were installed with 2008 after installation. Lower Operating Costs Increased Environmental Awareness

Space Air Type of site:warehouse, office and product showroom Location: Slyfield, Guildford, Surrey Hydromill Type of site: Restored water wheel in heritage mill Location: Guildford, Surrey Air source heat pump - own product installed for warehouse and office heating and cooling Historic water wheel, restored in 2006 by Guildford Borough Council Electricity generated by harnessing the power for water in the River Wey is fed into national grid Energy generation display for communication purpose The Mill Studio of the Yvonne Arnaud Theatre is the original mill building that the water wheel used to provide power to for producing flour. The new air source heat pump installed in the Space Air warehouse and office has reduced energy consumption by 28% over the year, compared with the older system. The mill generates around 260,000KW hours of electricity per year, which is enough to run 50 homes with renewable water-powered electricity.

Woking Energy Station Type of site: Purpose built for energy generation Location: Woking, Surrey Priory Park Pavilion Type of site: Cafe Location: Reigate, Surrey The energy station is a combined heat and power (CHP) system serving Woking town centre customers including Holiday Inn, Woking Borough Council s Civic Offices, Quake Nightclub, Big Apple Entertainment Centre, H.G.Wells Centre, Victoria Way Car Park and the Lightbox Gallery The Albion canopy is a grid connected 80kW solar photovoltaic system integrated into the canopy over the station plaza area between Albion House and Woking railway station. Ground source heat pump: water flows through pipes that are buried in the ground around the pavilion, from which heat is extracted. Then using electricity, the temperature of the water is raised, as required to provide heating and hot water. Heat pump connected to underfloor heating Passive solar gain is optimised, using a large glazed area, but with high reflecting properties and highly insulated roof, to minimise overheating in summer. The system is estimated to have saved 13 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions, compared to a conventional gas boiler.
