2 Page 2 A SPECIAL STORY Anyone who has pets will really like this. You ll like it even if you don t and may decide you need one. Mary and her husband Jim had a dog, Lucky. Lucky was a real character. Whenever Mary and Jim had company come for a weekend visit they would warn their friends to not leave their luggage open because Lucky would help himself to whatever struck his fancy. Inevitably, someone would forget and something would come up missing. Mary or Jim would go to Lucky s toy box in the basement and there the treasure would be, amid all of Lucky s favorite toys. Lucky always stashed his finds in his toy box and he was very particular that his toys stay in the box. But panic soon gave way to laughter when Mary realized the problem. She was covered, literally blanketed, with every treasure Lucky owned! While she had slept, the sorrowing dog had made trip after trip to the basement bringing his beloved mistress all his favorite things in life. He had covered her with his love. Mary forgot about dying. Instead she and Lucky began living again, walking further and further together every night. It s been 12 years now and Mary is still cancer free. Lucky? He still steals treasures and stashes then in his toy box, but Mary remains his greatest treasure. It happened that Mary found out she had breast cancer. Something told her she was going to die of this disease; she was just sure it was fatal. She scheduled the double mastectomy, fear riding her shoulders. The night before she was to go to the hospital she cuddled with Lucky. A thought struck her...what would happen to Lucky? Although the threeyear old dog liked Jim, he was Mary s dog through and through. If I die, Lucky will be abandoned, Mary thought. He wouldn t understand that I didn t want to leave him. The thought made her sadder than thinking of her own death. The double mastectomy was harder on Mary than her doctors had anticipated and Mary was hospitalized for over two weeks. Jim took Lucky for his evening walk faithfully, but the dog just drooped, whined and was miserable. Finally the day came for Mary to leave the hospital. When she arrived home, Mary was so exhausted she couldn t even make it up the steps to her bedroom. Jim made his wife comfortable on the couch and left her to nap. Lucky stood watching Mary but he didn t come to her when she called. DEADLINE FOR ARTICLES IN THE CONTACT IS FRIDAY MORNING BY 10:00 AM. ST. 5 Page 5 CHRISTIAN SERVICE AND EVENTS HOMEBOUND/NURSING HOME MINISTRY There is a growing number of parishioners who are unable to worship with us, but who long to stay connected to the parish through the Eucharist. To meet the requests we receive from the homebound and those in nursing homes, we are looking for parishioners to join the parish team of lay ministers who bring Communion to their home or nursing facility. We also have received calls for parishioners in need of transportation for appointments and errands. If you feel called to share your faith in these ways, please call Therese Tardiff in the parish office at WE ARE GOING TO ST. LEO S SOUP KITCHEN We will be serving a delicious lunch at St. Leo s on July 26, that is if you will be willing to make some hamburger with Manwich. I m sure you remember the recipe. Just brown some meat, add one can of Manwich per pound, then put it into a zip lock bag. Please call the Rectory at and let us know if you would like to participate. Bring the prepared meat to the Rectory on Friday July 24. The folks who come always enjoy your cooking so we are looking for a good response from our AT HOME volunteers. If you would like to come and serve the lunch, please call Barb at Thank you so very much. If you are unable to come to the soup kitchen with us but would still like to help out, we are asking that you bake some cookies, brownies, cupcakes, etc., so that we can take them with us. Just call the Rectory at and let them know that you want to help by baking or just bring them in by July 24. Thank you so much for your help of time and baking. JULY FOOD COLLECTION Each month we collect non-perishable food items for a local food pantry. Donations should be placed in the large wooden bin located in the Narthex. This month we are collecting for NEW HOPE PANTRY. LET S TAKE A TRIP AND EXPLORE OUR CORNER OF THE WORLD Have you heard about ArtPrize, the public art show in Grand Rapids that highlights the creativity of more than 1,500 artists from around the world? For two weeks each fall, art fills exhibition halls, museums, churches restaurants, hotels and street corners as part of the world s largest open art competition. Would you like to experience ArtPrize this September in the comfort of a tour bus? Years ago, there was a parish travel group that organized day and overnight outings through a local travel agency, and there is discussion about bringing it back. Before plans go any further, we would like to know what you think about the idea. What kind of trips appeal to you: Dinner and a show? Lunch and a matinee? Shopping excursions? Gardens? Museums? Historical? Spiritual? Local or farther afield? What is too close/ too far? Price range? In the space below, please share your thoughts and return the form to the parish office. And, do let us know if ArtPrize appeals to you we think it would be a great start to the program. NAME: PHONE NUMBER: PLACES YOU WOULD LIKE TO VISIT: MONEY AND WEALTH What can be bought with this money that we desire? Can it be anything of value? Anything that is permanent? If not, what do we want it for? All that it provides is a dismal ease which costs us very dear. What it obtains for us is hell; what it buys is fire everlasting and torments without end. -Teresa of Avila, Life YES, I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN ARTPRIZE.

God bless you St. Frances Cabrini Conference Society of St. Vincent de Paul BEAUTIFUL WORDS TO LIVE BY You can t change the past, but you can ruin the present by worrying over the future. God always gives His best to those who leave the choice with Him. A hug is a great gift..one size fits all. It can be given for any occasion and it s easy to exchange. If you fill your heart with regrets of yesterday and the worries of tomorrow, you have no today to be thankful for. Home is the place where we grumble the most, but are often treated the best. Patience is the ability to idle your motor when you feel like stripping your gears. The best thing parents can do for their children is to love each other. Take time to laugh for it is the music of the soul. If anyone speaks badly of you, live so none will believe it. Harsh words break no bones, but they do break hearts. You are richer today if you have laughed, given or forgiven. To get out of a difficulty, one usually must go through it.

Here are some real examples: As you exit the plane, please make sure to gather all of your belongings. Anything left behind will be distributed evenly among the attendants. Please do not leave children or spouses! Last one off the plane must clean it! From the pilot during his welcome message: We are please to have some of the best flight attendants in the industry...unfortunately none of them are on this flight. We hope you enjoyed giving us the business as much as we enjoyed taking you for a ride.

8 Page 8 DEATH WHAT A WONDERFUL WAY TO EXPLAIN IT A sick man turned to his doctor as he was preparing to leave the examination room and said, Doctor, I am afraid to die. Tell me what lies on the other side. Very quietly, the doctor said, I don t know. You don t know? You re a Christian man and don t know what s on the other side? The doctor was holding the handle of the door. On the other side came a sound of scratching and whining, and as he opened the door, a dog sprang into the room and leaped on him with an eager show of gladness. Turning to the patient, the doctor said, Did you notice my dog? He s never been in this room before. He didn t know what was inside. He knew nothing except that his master was here, and when the door opened, he sprang in without fear. I know little of what is on the other side of death, but I do know one thing... I know my Master is there and that is enough. May today there be peace within you. May you trust God that you are exactly where you are meant to be. I believe that friends are quiet angels Who lift us to our feet when our wings Have trouble remembering how to fly. FOR WIDOWED MEN AND WOMEN DINNER, SUPPORT & GAMES AT G.
