Using the Bureau of Reclamation Equipment Inspection and Cleaning Manual WORKSHOP 17 th International Conference on Aquatic Invasive Species
This Manual Has broad application for many organizations Guidance for equipment inspection and cleaning Audience is facility & equipment operators Builds understanding of prevention Developed with U.S. Army Corps of Engineers assistance
What Does the Manual Do? Terrestrial and aquatic environments Broad equipment types Rubber-tired vehicles Tracked vehicles Personal use equipment Construction equipment Facility equipment Unable to discuss all equipment types General protocols
A Logical Connection Establishes a logical connection of mission, equipment, operator actions, invasive species and impact to the mission Mission Invasive Species Equipment (all types) Equipment Operator
Outreach Tool Mission rather than regulatory centered Education and Information based Photos and drawings Online only, active links, updatable andcleaningmanual2010.pdf
Reads Like a Newspaper The first photo Mission Detail Location Aspect
Reclamation s Mission FAST FACTS: Manage water in 17 USA Western States Deliver water to 31 million people 44 billion kwh hydroelectric power 58 powerplants serving 6 million homes
Reclamation s Mission FAST FACTS: 16,000 miles (25,749 km) canals 280 miles (459 km) transmission tunnels 1,400 miles (2,253 km) pipelines 37,500 miles (60,350 km) channels 17,000 miles (27,358 km) irrigation drains 348 storage reservoirs 254 diversion dams 268 pumping plants >1,000 hp (746 kw)
Transportation and Dreissenid spread in the Western U.S. Establish a Logical Connection:
Prevention Focused Introduce the reader to the problem Inspection protocols first Cleaning protocols next Biological information last Crafted for the equipment user and facility operator community not the biologist A communication bridge from our community to their community
How Was the Manual Developed? Surveyed Reclamation personnel Interviewed other agency personnel, equipment users, facility operators, biologists and others Professional editor and graphic artist
Clean, Drain and Dry and More Inspect, clean equipment at last location High risk invasive? inspect, clean, inspect Re-inspect at new location new eyes Invasives found on equipment after move: Don t clean at new location Return to original location or send to a specialty cleaning facility Special considerations for watercraft
Why Was the Manual Developed? What the biologist said: Contaminated equipment spreads invasives Equipment must be inspected and cleaned What the equipment user said: Okay we cleaned it see it shine What this biologist thought: Be careful what you ask for!

Inspection and Cleaning all Types Equipment Combined - Real World MORE CLEANINGS FEWER INSPECTIONS MORE INSPECTIONS X FEWER CLEANINGS
Comments on Equipment Inspection What the biologist said: Inspection is a careful examination of equipment and is the primary tool for preventing the introduction of an invasive species into uninfested locations.
Comments on Equipment Inspection What the equipment user said: We check and top off all fluids before start of work; lubricate fittings we do a walkaround and inspect for leaks; look at belts and hoses, and check the gauges on engine startup.
Personal Use Equipment Terrestrial Aquatic
Comments on Equipment Cleaning What the biologist said: Cleaning, actually I prefer to call it decontamination, is a process to remove any visible plant or plant fragments, as well as mud or other debris. Plant material, mud, and other debris routinely contain other organisms that may be an aquatic nuisance species.
Comments on Equipment Cleaning What the equipment user said: I leave it (the tractor) outside all year I guess the rain washes the dirt off (M. Northrup, farmer in California)
