2 University of North Carolina Pembroke Department of Nursing Discover Nursing: Living Learning Leading Community (DNL³C) Introduction The Discover Nursing: Living Learning Leading Community (DNL³C) is an on-campus residential learning community for all levels of nursing majors. The community creates a unique opportunity for nursing majors to live, network, and study together in an engaging and supportive academic and social environment. Participating in the DNL³C provides nursing majors with the opportunity for guaranteed admission to the pre-licensure BSN program and a chance to be part of a community of peers, faculty and staff who share similar academic aspirations and career interests. The resident assistant for DNL³C is a junior or senior nursing student who works closely with the faculty and staff in the Department of Nursing. Community residents receive assistance from a DNL³C faculty coordinator in addition to their academic advisor from the Department of Nursing. The DNL³C is conveniently located across the street from the Department of Nursing within the Courtyard Apartment Complex. Students co-enroll in critical pre-nursing prerequisite coursework, participate in special events and activities designed to introduce students to the nursing profession, and network with the Department of Nursing faculty, nursing student leaders, and peer nursing student colleagues. Overall, the Discover Nursing: Living Learning Leading Community provides students with the opportunity for academic support, career exploration and integrated social experiences. Resident freshman pre-nursing majors are required to live together and participate in scheduled academic and special community activities. Resident sophomore pre-nursing majors are strongly encouraged to continue to live in the community after the freshman experience and participate in scheduled academic and special community activities. Commuter pre-nursing majors are also strongly encouraged to participate in scheduled academic and special community activities. Students admitted to the pre-licensure BSN program are encouraged to continue to be a member of the community throughout their enrollment in the nursing program. Mission of the DNL³C The mission of the DNL³C is to create and extend student learning opportunities outside of the classroom that heighten student intellectual and personal growth. The DNL³C is an attempt to integrate curricular and co-curricular experiences that complement and extend classroom learning. The community fosters peer, faculty, and resident interaction that enhance both intellectual and personal growth of the residents. Goal of the DNL³C The goal of the DNL³C is to provide an engaging and supportive academic and social environment that provides opportunities for developing the 1) skills necessary to succeed in the challenging nursing curricula and 2) level of professionalism associated with a career in nursing. 2
3 Academic and Social Benefits Live and learn with other nursing majors in a rewarding academic and campus experience Take selected critical pre-nursing prerequisite courses together during freshman and sophomore years Attend academic advising, tutoring for specific pre-nursing courses (biology, anatomy and physiology, chemistry, logic), review sessions, and small group discussions throughout the year to better prepare for the rigors of the pre-licensure BSN program Complete a Nursing Freshman Seminar course that is tailored to pre-nursing majors Get to know upperclassmen who have been successfully admitted into the pre-licensure BSN program at UNCP Meet Department of Nursing faculty prior to enrolling in the pre-licensure BSN program Interact with members of the Department of Nursing Association of Nursing Students Participate in special events and activities designed to introduce students to the nursing profession (for example: community trips to health care facilities and presentations by speakers from a variety of areas in the field of nursing) Guaranteed admission of pre-nursing majors to the pre-licensure BSN program pending completion of admission and DNL³C requirements Expectations as a Resident of DNL³C Declare and maintain nursing as major Agree to live, as a resident freshman, in the DNL³C located at the Courtyard Apartments Participate in scheduled community events Enroll in the Nursing Freshman Seminar designed specifically for pre-nursing majors Earn a minimum GPA of 2.8 by end of the freshman year and maintain GPA of 2.8 or higher until admitted to pre-licensure BSN program Expectations for Guaranteed Admission to Pre-Licensure BSN Program You are guaranteed admission to the pre-licensure BSN program as long as you meet the following criteria: Successful completion of Nursing Freshman Seminar course designed specifically for prenursing majors Completion of all required pre-nursing courses with a grade of "C" or better with no more than one course repetition due to failure Have a cumulative GPA of at least a 3.50 at time of being considered for admission to prelicensure BSN program and maintain this GPA throughout completion of remaining coursework Have a science GPA of at least 3.50 in completed science and math courses at the time of being considered for admission to nursing program and maintain this GPA throughout completion of remaining science and math coursework. The following courses are considered in the calculation of the science and math GPA: Anatomy & Physiology I and II, Microbiology, Chemistry I & II, College Algebra or higher Status as an active member of the DNL³C by participating in activities as scheduled (must earn a minimum of 85/100 points annually prior to admission to pre-licensure BSN program) 3
4 Classes Together Students in the Discover Nursing: Living Learning Leading Community will take several prerequisite classes together. By participating, students get to know their classmates more quickly and feel at ease faster than if they were facing a new group of peers in each class. These classes are linked together and organized in a way to increase the opportunity for student preparedness and academic success while developing the skills necessary to succeed in the challenging nursing curricula. Students may add up to three other classes to the set schedule as they wish.
