6 It~ Most Americans spend most of their hours up... sitting down. Which is kind of tough on the body. Because it tends to wither away. Physical exercise treats your body right. It pays. It tones up the muscles. Encourages the heart. Blows the cobwebs out of your brain. You don't have to be a pro. Or knock yourself out in competition. Just get moving. Pick up a sport! Golf. Hiking. Swimming. Bicycling. Badminton. Get your family moving with you. It's fun. It's fitness. You'll all feel better. And your body will last anger, too. PHYSICAL EXERCISE PAYS TRAVELERS PRESENTATION

23 The 1972 National Bicycle Championships were hosted by two cities with two separate championship committees. This was the fir st time that such a promotion of the nationals has occurred. And, as all who attended will attest, the championships were a smashing success. The spectators were treated to some of the best racing seen in many years on both the road and track. Few will forget the final event of the track championships as Bobby Phillips of Baltimore, captured his second Ten Mile Championship with a come from behind move rem ini scent of that famous race horse, Carry Back. Other outstanding performance on the track came from Gary Campbell in the matches. In the first round of the final for the sprint championship, Camp be ll caught Hans Nuernberg in an embarrassing situation. With 3/4ths of a lap to go, Nuernberg looked over his inside shoulder to keep his eye on Gary. But, Gary was no where to be see n. He had mad e a surprise move around the top of hi s o pponent. By KENOSHA, MILWAUKEE HOSTED '72 CHAMPIONSHIPS the time Hans recuperated, the fleeting Campbell was lengths ahead. But, Nuernberg was not to be out done as he captured the second ride. Then came the exciting finale with the two youngsters shoulder to shoulder with Campbell tak ing the top honors. On the road, the events were equally exciting. Seventeen year old Debbie Brad ley of Iowa stunned the crowd as she sped to the line just nipping vete ran Jeanne Omelenchuk in the Womens title event. Andre Berclaz of New York became the first official veterans' road champion breaking away from the field for a solo victory. The junior race had to be decided by photos as Ted Waterbury of Ohio and Dave Spohn of Wisconsin crossed the tape in what appeared to be a dead heat. But, when the polaroid was developed it was cl ear that Wate rbury was the new champion. The senior event was no different. As the field e ntered the fi na l 500 meters, a large group remained to contest the title dash. Wayne Stetina of Indiana, riding in his first senior title event, put on a furious sprint for the tape. Bob Schne ider of Wi s consin was right on his tail. With 25 yards to go, it looked as if Stetina would hold off the challenge by Schneider. And then, out of nowhere (or so it appeared) John Howard of Missouri rocketed to the front to nip the 19 year-old Indiana flash by inches. And so another exciting National Championsh ips was brought to a fitting close. As usual, the riders put forth tre mendous efforts wh ich make every race well worth the time to watch. The League and its members would like to thank those individuals who made the 1972 Championships the success that they were. We look forward to returning again to the Kenosha track as it is one of the finest in the States. And, we did not have long to wait for our return to Milwaukee as the local committee is now sponsoring and promoting the 1973 Road Championships. MI DGET BOYS TRAC K 1 ml x& mi. y, mi. 24 Why do so many athletes congregate each year at the host site of the National Cycling Championships? Why do they spend so much money for these events? Why do they spend so many hours in preparation each day for the championships? This can only be answered by each individual athlete_ For each athlete has his own personal reason for participating in cycling competition_ If you want the true answers, ask some of the competitors as you meet them during the week long competition_ The athletes who are competing got to the nationals in one of two ways_ Most of them have qualified through their own state championships which were held on July 7th and 8th_ Each state is allowed a certain number of qualifiers according to the number of registrations that they have in a particular class_ A ve ry se lect number of riders are allowed to ride the nationals each year w ithout qual ify ing th rough their state championships_ These riders are the defending National Champions_ And, this year, certain juniors will be allowed to ride without competing in the state championsh ips _ They were selected for the THE NATIONALS!I! WHAT'S IT ALL ABOUT? European Junior Championship Team and were competing in Munich, Germany with our National Junior Team from July 3rd to the 8th_ National Championships are held for the following classes of riders: Midgets (boys and girls). Intermediates (boys and girl s). Junior Men, Senior Women, Senior Men, and Veteran Men_ The Midget boys and girls compete for track championships only_ The intermediate girls also compete for a track championship only wh il e the boys have both road and track championships. T he juniors also c o mpete for both titles. Th E: senior men and women have a more varied sel ection of championships. The women compete in match springs, 3000 meter pursu it, a nd road. The men compete for the kilometer, the pursuit, t he match sprint, the team pursuit, and the ten m ile titles as well as the road championsh ip. The veterans go for broke on the road only. The track titles for the midgets, inter- mediates, and juniors have a series of races_ Riders finishing in the top five places in each event score points, 1st 7 pts_; 2nd-5 pts.; 3rd-3 pts.; 4th-2 pts_; 5th-' pt. The rider with the largest total points at the end of the series is declared the class champion. The men's and women's track events are separate championships within themselves with the first three finishers in each receiving medals,, st-gold; 2nd-silver; 3rdbronze. The road championsh ips are also for th ree places with only one event to decide the championship. The vets go 40 miles, the women 32, the men 120, the juniors 48, and the intermediates 12. The annual championships pack six exiting days of racing into nine days_ In between the racing, new friendships are made, old ones revived, and past ones remembered_ League meeti ngs abound with the National Convention and Board of Direc t ors meetings in the li melight. And, the finale of each championship, the Banquet of Champions, at which time the champions and the runners-up receive their awards and recognitior.. And then its home to begin planning for the next nationals. See you all next year. ~
