4 HISTORY Deaf Christian Ministry Africa (DCMA) was born out of a great need. The most Deaf people in South Africa (almost in total) is cut off from the normal means of spiritual care due to their communicational needs. The four Dutch Reformed churches and a few small Deaf groups cannot serve the needs of this big group of people. In 1998 the law for schools in South Africa changed to limit the religious education in schools to giving of information on all the different religions. Deaf learners seldom have a home where they can learn about God outside the school. This was the place where they had the opportunity to get to know God in a Sign Language environment. The Lord has touched the hearts of Geoff and Eileen Stenekamp to start something to reach the thousands of isolated Deaf people in South Africa. This was the beginning of DCMA which started on 10 April 2006 in Worcester, Western Cape, South Africa, with the dedication of its first Deaf students. DCMA functions as part of the National Institute for the Deaf in Worcester. N I D D E A F C H R I S T I A N M I N I S T R Y A F R I C A 4
5 VISION, MISSION AND VALUES Our Vision JESUS CHRIST TO THE DEAF BY THE DEAF Our Mission Training and placement of Deaf ordained ministers and pastors of the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ for the Deaf in a Deaf friendly way, by qualified, experienced persons and organizations who are involved in the world of the Deaf for sustainable ministry and community transformation to the Deaf in Africa in their own language and culture. What we believe We believe in the Holy Trinity (Father, Son and Holy Spirit), as revealed by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God. We believe that God wants to save all people, including the Deaf, by grace through the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord Jesus Christ. We believe that the church is the living body of Christ consisting of those who confess Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior and that the Lord uses His church to spread the gospel amongst the nations. Language Language in class is Sign Language. Reading and writing language is either Afrikaans or English depending on the needs of the student. Dogma We believe in the Holy Trinity, as revealed by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God. We believe that He wants to save all people, including Aim Based on this foundation, we aim to train Deaf students to minister the Gospel in their own distinctive manner to different Deaf communities and denominations in order to lead them to Christ so that they can form part of the body of Christ.
