2 130 YEARS OF TRADITION AND TRANSITION A message from the CEO and Board Chair 2014 was a year that afforded us the opportunity to look back and celebrate! As Spokane s oldest non-profit, we reveled in our 130th year of service and mission impact to our community. In an age of start-ups where businesses, both for profit and non-profit, come and go, 130 years of continuous success is nothing short of extraordinary. Tradition however, demands something greater it demands the capacity to change, the ability to evolve, the commitment to understand the needs of a community, and to ultimately answer those needs. Consider the springboard for the most recent example of our evolution when we launched an ambitious capital campaign in 2007 culminating with two brand new facilities opening in We forged an incredibly successful partnership with the YWCA to build a joint facility, efficiently using our collective resources to serve a community. We constructed a new facility in north Spokane which previously didn t have a YMCA presence. We grew our membership from 15,000 to over 40,000 and we became one of this community s largest employers growing our workforce from a few hundred to over eight hundred. We look back proudly on 2014 as another year of transition where our magnificence was less about our brick and mortar and more about our people and mission. We listened to the community and deployed our staff and volunteers to answer community need and to ensure we ll always give everyone a safe place to learn, grow, and thrive at the YMCA. The community told us there was an achievement gap with too many children falling behind in academics. We committed to providing the very best in Early Learning programs at both our Central YMCA and Early Learning Center on the campus of Eastern Washington University. We served over 150 children a day, a vast majority financially assisted, ensuring that they would be ready for kindergarten. We eased the transition to high school for ninth graders at North Central High School with our Outside the Box program mentoring for greater success and higher graduation rates. Our partnership with Gonzaga and Whitworth Universities through the Act Six program provided eight area high school students from ethnically and economically diverse backgrounds the opportunity to attend those universities on four-year full-tuition scholarships. Health disparities continue to plague our community there is as much as an eighteen year difference in life expectancy between neighborhoods in Spokane. Our Membership For All program bases membership fees on household income ensuring everybody has access to quality health and wellness programs and state of the art facilities. Cancer has become part of our vernacular, something we couldn t have envisioned even several years ago. Yet our transition gave life to the LIVESTRONG at the YMCA program, providing cancer survivors the chance to get their life and health back on track by working with certified coaches in our facilities, free of charge. When the American Cancer Society made the difficult decision to no longer provide camp for kids affected by cancer, Camp Goodtimes returned to its original home at YMCA Camp Reed and we made certain that young people in treatment or post treatment would enjoy a week at our 100-year-old camp free of charge for many years to come. HISTORICAL FACT: The Spokane YMCA had been operating for 25 years before the arrival of the Looff Carousel in This extraordinary blend of art and machinery, now operating in Riverfront Park, has been located in Spokane since it was manufactured and delivered to its original location at Natatorium Park. Unfortunately, diabetes continues to wreak havoc on our health care system and the lives of many. The YMCA s Diabetes Prevention Program offers individuals the chance to make lifestyle changes that will prevent the onset of this pervasive illness. After 130 years, we truly believe our community is healthier and better poised for success thanks to the commitment of our board and staff to our charitable mission. We look forward to positive community impact in what will be, the many years ahead. Steve Tammaro YMCA President/CEO Holly Montgomery YMCA Corporate Board Chair 2 3

Yingst Brenda Zehm * In Memorium LEAVING A HISTORY A OF LEGACY GIVING In 1887, noted evangelist Dwight Moody held a series of evangelistic meetings in Spokane. One was a fundraiser that collected $2,500, enough to enable the Young Men s Christian Association, in 1899, to secure a meeting place in the Blake Building at the northwest corner of Riverside and Post. After five years in the Blake Building successfully meeting the physical, social, and emotional needs of nearly 10,000 young men living in Spokane, YMCA trustees voted to raise $100,000 toward a new building in honor of Spokane youth. In 1906, 2,000 supporters joined a celebration to commemorate the new YMCA on the southeast corner of First and Lincoln. It contained a gymnasium, pool, craft shop, cafeteria, coffee shop, billiard rooms, youth department, adult lounge, three floors of dormitories, and many meeting rooms. The facility cost $75,000. Before the cornerstone was laid, W.S. Gilbert, on behalf of the YMCA board declared, I am proud to live in a town where there are men with foresight to see this obligation and the courage and manhood to meet it by supplying such a building as this. In those early years, the Association focused on physical education, businessmen s activities, and technical training schools. The aquatics program was established early on and became an integral part of the YMCA. Over the years, thousands of people have learned to swim at the Spokane Y. On its literature, the local Y embraced the popular symbol of the international organization: a triangle representing the threefold purpose of spirit, mind, and body. 4 5

HISTORICAL SNAPSHOT When the United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917, John Mott, a leader of the YMCA movement in America, involved the Y in running military canteens. At its national meeting that year, a YMCA featured speaker reported that in the European war the Y is doing work that the churches could not do. He spoke of YMCA workers serving among the prison camps in England, France, Germany, Russia, and Mesopotamia, bringing cheer and comfort to hundreds of thousands of men languishing in these camps (The Spokesman-Review, March 22, 1917). The YMCA was also appointed as the official agency to serve the soldiers and sailors in the training camps in France. Here at home, the Association was rendering excellent service to men in the Armed Forces. The Spokane YMCA organized a Y War Council of 100 members, according to historical documents dated from The YMCA locally threw its entire strength behind the war effort, noted one unsigned document. Following the war, Spokane fell in line with the national Y to make returning servicemen feel welcome. The Spokane YMCA gave six months of free membership to all returning servicemen as part of a national Mobilizing for Peace program to help servicemen readjust to civilian life.
