1 Government of Western Australia Department of Health Child and Adolescent Health Service SPEECH PATHOLOGISTS IN PRIVATE PRACTICE WORKING WITH CHILDREN Some families choose to use private therapy for their child while they wait for their appointment with the Child Development Service. Private therapy services are provided outside of the Child Development Service on a fee for service basis from a clinician working in private practice. Your child can still receive our child development services if you decide to access private services. If for any reason you no longer want to be considered for our Child Development Service, it is important that you let us know by calling This will not exclude your child from being referred to the service at another time. The attached list provides details of private clinicians that may be relevant to the needs of your child. The list is provided as an information resource for parents and carers and is collated from publicly available information. Inclusion on the list is not a recommendation by the Child Development Service or the Department of Health, and the list may not be inclusive of all private services available. Further information regarding private speech therapists can be found on the Speech Australia website (external website). Speech Pathologists work with children and their families to develop children s communication skills. This includes improving children's ability to understand and use speech and language appropriately, and to be understood by others. When choosing a private clinician, it may be helpful to ask some of the following questions: What are your qualifications? What is your area of specialty? What age group do you usually see? What is your appointment availability? Where will the service be provided; home, school, clinic? What programs are offered? Is it on a group or individual basis? Will you provide me with a written report? What will the appointment cost? Do you bulk bill? Are you registered with Medicare and/or my private health insurer to provide rebates? Can you tell me how much the rebate is? Medicare Rebates: Some children may be eligible to receive a Medicare rebate for a limited number of private appointments. There may be a gap between the Medicare rebate and the fee for the private service. You will need to discuss eligibility with your GP, who will provide you with a referral if your child is eligible. For more information please discuss with your GP, or phone Medicare on or visit The following are examples of funding initiatives (including Medicare Benefits Schedule): Better Start for Children with Disability, Helping Children with Autism, Chronic Disease Management, Better Access, Better Outcomes in Mental Healthcare, Medicare Follow-up Allied Health Services for People of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Descent, National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) and NDIS My Way. If you are a private practice speech pathologist and would like your details to be included or amended, please complete the web form through the following link If you need further information or the request is urgent please contact Child Development Services on or via [email protected].
