1 Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Distance Courses The Arctic FASD RTC is offers a series of three, intensive, one-credit courses during the spring semesters through distance delivery via the Department of Psychology at the University of Alaska Anchorage. The course content covers FASD-related topics and is based on the CDC s Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders Competency-Based Curriculum. Each course is offered at both an undergraduate (A490) and graduate (A690) level. All UAA admissions and tuition policies and requirements apply. The course are Competency One: FASD Foundations Historical, biomedical, and clinical background of fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) and other disorders related to prenatal exposure to alcohol, known collectively as fetal alcohol spectrum disorders (FASDs). Competency Two: Screening and Brief Intervention Services aimed at preventing alcoholexposed pregnancies in women of childbearing age through screening and brief interventions for alcohol use. Competency Three: Models of Addiction Concepts and models of addiction to women of childbearing age, including those who are pregnant, to provide Describe the basic biomedical foundation of FAS. Explain the basic clinical issues related to FASDs. Provide an overview of the epidemiological and psycho-social-cultural aspects of FASDs. Screen women of childbearing age for alcohol use at the appropriate time during patient care. Use demographic and other risk factors appropriately in prevention and screening activities. Use screening methods, screening tools, and assessment methods appropriately as part of prevention and screening activities. Conduct brief interventions with women. Appreciate the use of more extensive interviews to evaluate alcohol consumption during pregnancy. Define risk drinking and differentiate types of drinkers by patterns of alcohol use. Assess for referral to treatment. Explain past and current models of alcohol use. Describe the categories of alcohol use in women. Describe stages of alcohol use, dependence, and addiction. Recognize characteristics of alcohol-dependent families. Competency Four: Biological Effects of Alcohol on developing Embryo and Fetus The effects of alcohol on the developing embryo and fetus. Competency Five: Screening, Diagnosis, and Assessment of FAS Screening, diagnosing, and assessing infants, children, adolescents, and adults for FAS and other prenatal alcoholrelated disorders. Define the amount of alcohol in a drink. Explain alcohol metabolism and pharmacology (absorption, distribution, metabolism, and elimination). Describe birth defects associated with alcohol use. Describe alcohol-induced injuries on developing organ systems. Describe cellular responses to alcohol exposure. Explain putative biomedical mechanisms. Explain the effects of ethanol exposure on neurobehavioral outcomes, specifically those that are cognitive and psychiatric/behavioral. Describe genetic variants and markers for susceptibility for FASDs. Describe the Framework for FAS Diagnosis and Services. Explain the diagnostic criteria for FAS. Understand appropriate criteria for referral for an FAS diagnostic evaluation. Understand the assessment, evaluation, and feedback process Course Two Section 253 Course Two Section 253 Competency Six: Treatment Across the Lifespan for Persons with FASDs Long-term case management/ case coordination for persons with FASDs. Competency Seven: Ethical, Legal, and Policy Issues Ethical, legal, and policy issues related to FASDs. Describe developmental and functional concerns for individuals with FASDs and their families across the life span. Explain various treatment approaches. Explain family support services and resources. 4 Course One: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Basic Foundations, Screening, and Brief Interventions Course Information: PSY A490/A690 Section 252 Special Topics in Psychology Course Timeframe: 1/11/11-2/15/11 Course Description: This one-credit course will cover basic biomedical foundations of FASDs, screening and brief interventions for alcohol use during pregnancy, and current models of addiction. Basic biomedical foundations and clinical issues, overview of epidemiological and psycho-social-cultural aspects of FASDs, effective screening and brief intervention strategies, and overview of current models of alcohol use and addictions will be addressed. Content is useful for various disciplines (i.e., psychology, social work, human relations, nursing, education, and allied health.) 5 Course Two: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Biological Effects, Diagnosis and Assessment, and Treatment across the Lifespan Course Information: PSY A490/A690 Section 253 Special Topics in Psychology Course Timeframe: 2/16/11-3/23/11 Course Description: This one-credit course will cover the effects of alcohol on the developing embryo and fetus; processes for screening, diagnosing and assessing FASD and other prenatal alcohol-related disorders; and various treatment and family support services and resources. Special focus will be placed on the developmental and functional concerns for individuals with FASDs and their families across the lifespan. Content is useful for various disciplines (i.e., psychology, social work, human relations, nursing, education, and allied health.) 6 Course Three: Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders: Ethical, Legal and Policy Issues Course Information: PSY A490/A690 Section 254 Special Topics in Psychology Course Timeframe: 3/24/11-4/26/11 Course Description: This one-credit course will take a social action perspective in exploring ethical, legal and policy issues related to FASDs in Alaska. Content will include, but not be limited to, confidentiality issues, fetal rights and maternal-fetal relationship, limitation of coercive and punitive approaches to FASD prevention, and public health approaches (education and substance abuse treatment). Content is useful for various disciplines (i.e., public health, psychology, social work, human relations, nursing, education, and allied health.) Course Goals and Student Learning Outcomes: Through this course, course participants will achieve the following goals and objectives: Describe the basic biomedical foundation of FAS Describe birth defects associated with alcohol use Understand current professional knowledge and attitudes regarding prenatal alcohol exposure Describe basic ethical principles for health care Identify ethical principles in relation to FASDs Recognize patient confidentiality in relation to FASDs Discuss fetal rights and the maternal-fetal relationship Discuss limitations of coercive and punitive approaches toward alcohol and drug use in pregnancy Identify elements of a public health approach to FASDs Instructional Methods: This is a web-based distance education course. All of the content, activities, and student-tostudent/student-to-faculty interactions for this course will be facilitated online through Blackboard.
