The Nordic Ecoabe moduar system for paper products Nordic Ecoabeed paper products may be made of wood fibre, fibres from other pants and recyced fibre. The criteria for Nordic Ecoabeing of paper products encompass a wide range of requirements, most of which reate to pup and paper production. The Basic Modue (this document) contains genera requirements concerning forestry management, emissions, energy use and waste disposa in regard to pup and paper production. The Chemica Modue contains genera requirements in regard to the uses of chemicas in the manufacture of pup and paper. Suppementary Modues contain those requirements in regard to specific paper products which must be fufied in order that a icence to carry the Nordic Ecoabe may be granted. The requirements eves in a suppementary modue may be more stringent or more enient than those of the basic or chemica modue. If the standards required in the modues differ, the requirement eves specified in the appicabe suppementary modue are to be appied. For a product to be granted a icence to carry the Nordic Ecoabe, the reevant requirements in the Basic Modue and Chemica Modue, in addition to the requirements in the appicabe suppementary modue, must be fufied. Version 1 of the moduar system incudes the foowing documents regarding paper products: Genera criteria Basic Modue (Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper Products Basic Modue) Chemica Modue (Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper Products Chemica Modue) and the foowing suppementary modues Nordic Ecoabeing of Copy and Printing Paper Suppementary Modue Nordic Ecoabeing of Tissue Paper Suppementary Modue Nordic Ecoabeing of Greaseproof Paper Suppementary Modue Nordic Ecoabeing of Coffee Fiters Suppementary Modue Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper Enveopes Suppementary Modue Version 2 of the moduar system incudes the foowing documents: Basic Modue (Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper Products Basic Modue) Chemica Modue (Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper Products Chemica Modue) Other Nordic Ecoabe criteria may refer to the moduar system, such as the Criteria for Copying and Printing Paper (version 4), the Criteria for Tissue Paper (version 5) and the Criteria for Sanitary Products. 4 What is Nordic Ecoabeed paper? The Nordic Ecoabe is an officia eco-abe with absoute requirements. Nordic Ecoabeed papers have ess impact on the environment than most other papers in their product groups and the Nordic Ecoabe signifies that the product fufis strict environmenta requirements. This means that the paper has minimum environmenta impact with regard to production, use and waste. This is achieved by using certified raw materias, by imiting the use of environmentay harmfu chemicas, by producing ow emissions to air and water and by reducing energy consumption. Nordic Ecoabeing environmenta requirements provide individua manufacturers guidance on how they can contribute to the deveopment of a sustainabe, ecoogica society. The Nordic Ecoabe on a paper product confirms that resources have been used efficienty and that environmentay suitabe production methods have been empoyed. The raw materias used in the product have been evauated by Nordic Ecoabeing and ony raw materias of the highest quaity in environmenta terms may be used in Nordic Ecoabeed products. Why choose the Nordic Ecoabe? The Nordic Ecoabe is a performance standard with absoute requirements. The Nordic Ecoabe is a cost-effective and simpe means of communicating environmenta work and commitment. The Nordic Ecoabe enjoys high credibiity and famiiarity in the Nordic countries. Recognition of the Nordic Ecoabe in 2010 was 98% in Sweden, 95% in Norway, 88% in Finand, 93% in Denmark and 73% in Iceand. Environmenta issues are compex. It can take a ong time and extensive resources to gain an understanding of a specific area. Nordic Ecoabeing faciitates this work. The Nordic Ecoabe aso sets requirements on quaity and recycabiity. This means that a Nordic Ecoabe icence can aso be seen as a mark of quaity. A Nordic Ecoabe aows manufacturers to communicate to purchasers in the pubic and private sector that the manufacturer is environmentay conscious. 20 Appendix 1C Guideines for forest certification, CoC certification and organic production Requirements on forestry standards Nordic Ecoabeing sets requirements on the standards to which forestry is certified. These requirements are described beow. Each individua nationa forestry standard and each certification system is reviewed by Nordic Ecoabeing as to fufiment of the requirements. When a forestry standard is revised, it is re-reviewed. Requirements on forestry standards The standard must baance economic, ecoogica and socia interests and compy with the Rio Decaration s forestry principes, Agenda 21 and the Forest Principes, and respect reevant internationa conventions and agreements. The standard must contain absoute requirements and promote and contribute towards sustainabe forestry. Nordic Ecoabeing paces specia emphasis on the standard incuding effective requirements to protect the forest from iega feing and that the requirements protect the biodiversity of the forest. The standard must be avaiabe to the genera pubic. The standard must have been deveoped in an open process in which stakehoders with ecoogica, economic and socia interests have been invited to participate. The requirements reated to forestry standards are formuated as process requirements. The basis is that if stakehoders agree on the economic, socia and environmenta aspects of the forestry standard, this safeguards an acceptabe requirement eve. If a forestry standard is deveoped or approved by stakehoders with ecoogica, economic and socia interests, the standard may maintain an acceptabe standard. Accordingy, Nordic Ecoabeing requires that the standard baances these three interests and that representatives from a three areas are invited to participate in deveopment of the forestry standard. The standard must set absoute requirements that must be fufied for the certification of the forestry. This ensures that the forest management fufis an acceptabe eve regards the environment. When Nordic Ecoabeing re quires that the standard sha promote and contribute towards sustainabe forestry, the standard must be assessed and revised reguary to initiate process improvement and successivey reduce environmenta impact. Requirements on certification system The certification system must be open, have significant nationa or internationa credibiity and be abe to verify that the requirements in the forestry standard are fufied. Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper products - Basic Modue 2.1

Requirements on certification body The certification body must be independent, credibe and capabe of verifying that the requirements of the standard have been fufied. The certification body must aso be abe to communicate the resuts and to faciitate the effective impementation of the standard. The purpose of certification is to ensure that the requirements regarding forestry standards are fufied. The certification system must be designed to verify that the requirements of the forest standard are fufied. The method used for certification must be repeatabe and appicabe to forestry. Certification must be in respect to a specific forestry standard. The forest must be inspected prior to certification. Requirements on Chain of Custody (CoC) certification Chain of Custody certification must be issued by an accredited, competent third party (as for forest certification). The system sha stipuate requirements regarding the chain of custody that assure traceabiity, documentation and contros throughout the production chain. If recyced fibre, wood shavings or sawdust are used, the pup manufacturer must verify that this originates from recyced materias. Requirements on organic production With regard to certified organic fibre raw materia or production that is in the transition to organic production, the vegetabe raw materias must be produced and checked in accordance with Counci Reguation (EEC) No 2092/91 or 834/2007, or produced and checked in an equivaent way according to an equivaent reguatory system such as KRAV, SKAL, IMO or OCIA. NB! Bamboo may either be certified according to a sustainabe forestry standard or organic production. Documentation Copy of forestry/ fiber raw materia standard, name, address and teephone number to the organization who has worked out the standard and audit report. References to persons who represents stakehoders with ecoogica, economic and socia interests who have been invited to participate. Nordic Ecoabeing may request further documents to examine whether the requirements of the forestry standard and certification system in question can be approved. Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper products - Basic Modue 2.1

Appendix 1D Summary of certified wood and fibre raw materia The proportion of certified wood or fibre raw materia sha be cacuated using one of the foowing three methods: 1. Using the tota proportion of fibre raw materia from certified forestry operations/organic production purchased annuay by the factory, assuming that fibre raw materia from certified forestry operations/organic production is present in a pup types. In this case the proportion wi be the same for a pups produced by the mi. 2. Cacuation of the input in each individua pup type on an annua basis. Here, documentation must be submitted on the system used for tracing fibre raw materias from certified forestry operations/organic production within the mi. In the case of pups containing severa wood/pant fibre types, the proportion of fibre raw materia from certified forestry operations/organic production is cacuated as the tota of the weighted proportion of each wood type based on an annua average. (The proportion of fibre raw materia from certified forestry operations/organic production is mutipied by the proportion of the wood/pant type in question in the pup. The figures for a wood/pant types are then added up.) 3. Using the tota proportion of fibre raw materia from certified forestry operations/organic production purchased annuay by the trade company (company or group) in the country in question, assuming that fibre raw materia from certified forestry operations/organic production is present in the appicabe pup type. It must be possibe for an independent third party to verify the traceabiity of the fibre raw materia from the feing site to the trade company. Appendix 1C provides guideines that the Nordic Ecoabeing Board uses as a basis for the evauation of certification standards, systems and bodies. Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper products - Basic Modue 2.1

Appendix 2 Energy and CO Guideines to energy cacuations Requirements govern the use of energy in the form of fue and eectricity. The requirement is based on information on actua energy use in production in reation to a specified reference vaue. The ratio between the two represents the energy score. The energy cacuation encompasses the entire production process both paper manufacturing and the constituent pup. The cacuation for paper does not incude fier. Energy cacuations do not incude energy consumed in transporting raw materias or in converting and packaging. Energy consumption: State the tota energy consumption in processes used in pup or paper production per tonne of product, specified as fue and eectricity. Fue: Purchased fue, fue produced within the pant and waste products must a be specified. This means, for exampe, that ye, bark and woodchips must be incuded in the cacuations to the extent that their therma vaues contribute to the energy suppied to the process. The fue used to produce both heat and eectricity on-site must be stated. Fue consumption cacuations are based on the effective therma vaue of the dry matter. Cacuations may be based either on measured therma vaues or the vaues specified in Appendix 2.5. If the fue contains water, the cacuation method specified in Appendix 2.6 can be used. If fue is used for interna eectricity generation, the equivaent quantity of fue must be subtracted from the actua fue consumption (= 1.25 * internay generated eectricity). This wi ensure that energy information reating to fue used in interna eectricity generation is not counted twice. Eectricity: Purchased eectricity and internay generated eectricity must both be reported. ( The consumption of eectricity and fue sha be based on bis and eectricity meter readings. The cacuated points must be passed on by the pup manufacturer to the paper manufacturer and to Nordic Ecoabeing. The paper manufacturer can then perform a cacuation of the tota energy score for the finished paper. The cacuation incudes energy scores for a pups used and energy scores for the paper production. Internay produced eectricity can be documented on the basis of readings of the mi s own eectricity meters. In the case of purchased fue the purchased quantity must be reconcied in reation to the quantity at the start and end of the year in question. Interna consumption of residua products such as ye, bark, chippings etc. is cacuated on the basis of the estimated therma vaue of the fue used (see Tabe 2.3 in Section 2.5). Accordingy reporting encompasses the tota (purchased) eectricity consumption and consumption of fue. Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper products - Basic Modue 2.1

Steam: If excess energy from other production (for exampe from other industria sources) is used, the energy content of the steam must be used in the cacuation. The steam tabe in Appendix 2.5 shoud be used for this purpose. If steam from eectric boiers is used, the energy content must be converted to fue in the same way but the energy content must be mutipied by 2.5. Aocation: Aocation is required if the pup or paper manufacturer produces products that wi not be ecoabeed as we as those that are to be Nordic Ecoabeed and cannot distinguish the energy requirements of the process types. Energy consumption must be aocated to the Nordic Ecoabeed product. Tabes 2.1 and 2.2 contain reference vaues for the process types not used for the Nordic Ecoabeed product. It is assumed that contribution from these process types to the tota energy requirement is equa to the tota reference vaue for energy. Which process ines that are not used for Nordic Ecoabeed paper must be ceary stated. In exceptiona cases the average vaue for ecoabeed products and nonecoabeed products may be appied. However, the products must be of equivaent quaity and be produced with equivaent processes within the same production unit. Integrated production: The reference energy vaues for both pup and paper mis sha be used for integrated production (Tabe 2.1 and 2.2). In the case of integrated mis that function both as suppiers of market pup and pump pup for Nordic Ecoabeed products, the reference vaue for drying market pup (but not pump pup) must be used. Surpus energy: Surpus energy sod off in the form of eectricity, steam or heat, is subtracted from tota consumption. The quantity of fue used to generate eectricity or heat that is sod off is cacuated by dividing the sod eectricity or heat by 0.8. This is equivaent to the average energy efficiency for tota production of eectricity and heat. As an aternative the actua energy efficiency of the pant in converting fue to therma energy may be used, provided that this is documented to Nordic Ecoabeing. Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper products - Basic Modue 2.1

2.2. Energy cacuation, paper manufacturer Energy scores for paper production Energy scores P paper(eectricity) and P paper(fue) for paper production in paper machines are cacuated using the foowing formua: and Vaues for Eectricity reference and Fue reference can be found in Tabe 2.1. Due to spiage and differences in water content, the sum of pup i may be greater than 1. P pup(eectricity)i is the energy score for eectricity for pup i. P pup(fue)i is the energy score for fue for pup i. A more detaied description of the energy scores (e.g. regarding integrated production) is provided in Section 2.1 of the guideines to the energy cacuations. ( Cacuation of point score using the spreadsheet provided by Nordic Ecoabeing. Nordic Ecoabeing of Paper products - Basic Modue 2.1

2.2.3 Tota energy score for paper and pup production The tota score for both eectricity and fue consumption is based on the weighted scores for the pup and paper mis (X = weight of the reference vaue from the pup or paper production): Where Where In the case of mixtures of pups, the reference vaue for eectricity and fue must be weighted using the proportion of pup, pupi, in the formua for X. ( Documentation sha incude cacuations with sub-totas. It sha be cear which base vaues are used for consumed fue and eectricity. Nordic Ecoabeing aso provides a worksheet that is to be used for these cacuations. 2.3 Energy cacuation, pup manufacturer Energy scores P pup(eectricity)i and P pup(fue)i for producing a pup, i, is cacuated with the aid of the foowing formuas: and Vaues for Eectricity reference and Fue reference can be found in Tabe 2.2. Paper manufacturer. The emission of CO 2 from purchased eectricity and fossi fue used for heating and eectricity must not exceed: 1,000 kg CO 2 /tonne paper for paper made of 100% DIP/recyced fibre; 900 kg CO 2 /tonne paper for paper made of 100% ceuose pup; and 1,600 kg CO 2 /tonne for paper made of 100% mechanica pup. For paper comprising a mixture of ceuose pup, recyced fibre and mechanica pup, a weighted imit vaue is cacuated, based on the proportion of each pup type. Fiers are excuded from this cacuation. The cacuations sha incude the weighted average of the CO 2 emissions of a pups in the pup mix. This average sha be totaed with the CO 2 emissions from paper production. The paper manufacturer sha specify the quantities of fossi fue used for heat production and eectricity generation. The paper manufacturer sha cacuate CO 2 emissions for pup and paper using the vaues provided in Section 2.5, Tabe 2.5. CO 2 from surpus energy that is sod off in the form of eectricity, steam or heat, is subtracted from tota emissions. CO 2 emissions from purchased eectricity are cacuated by mutipying the actua figure for purchased eectricity, kwh/tonne paper, (as specified in the energy requirement), by 385 g CO 2 /kwh. Regarding CO 2 emissions from purchased heat energy, information sha be attained from the heat suppier. CO 2 emissions from purchased eectricity are added to the CO 2 emissions from consumed fossi fues for in-house/purchased heat and in-house eectricity generation.
