Hamit Altıntop spent four seasons with Schalke, his hometown club, while teammates Hakan Balta, Engin Baytar, Ceyhun Gülselam and Furkan Özçal were also born in Germany. Both clubs have cause for confidence, with Schalke unbeaten at home in this season's UEFA Champions and Galatasaray looking to complete a hattrick of away victories in the competition. Victorious in their last two group stage away fixtures, at CFR Cluj and SC Braga, Galatasaray's UEFA Champions record on their travels since September is W D L. A fringe player in the Bundesliga, he moved to second division Wolfsburg and again won promotion, subsequently becoming a topflight regular and earning a return to Stuttgart, where he played in the / UEFA Cup. Joined Köln in but relegated two years later, prompting a switch to Eintracht, whom he helped into the Bundesliga only to miss most of the season with cartilage damage; relegation and further injury problems led to retirement in.
