4 Barcelona Solar Thermal Ordinance Aim: to promote and regulate through local legislation the installation of low-temperature systems for collecting and using active solar energy for the production of hot water for buildings. According to this bylaw all new buildings (with a demand > 296 MJ/day) and buildings undergoing major refurbishment are obligated to use solar energy to supply 60% of their running hot water requirements. Area of application: City of Barcelona
5 The sun in Barcelona ü hours of sunshine/year ü Solar radiation1.502 kwh/sqm (flat surface) ü The hours of sunshine of Barcelona are equal to: - 10 times the total energy consumption, and - 28 times the total electric consumption.
6 Barcelona solar thermal ordinance: Approval process July 1999 Solar thermal ordinance approved by the Barcelona City Council Year of non application (moratorium) August 2000 Entry into force and application of the ordinance.
7 Barcelona solar thermal ordinance: evaluation as of April 2004 Before the Ordinance: sqm installed. 1,1 sqm/1.000 inhabitants with the Ordinance: (April 2004) sqm of solar panels (licenses requested) 13 sqm/1.000 inhabitants

Why is it renewable? Well, the sun will always be there for us, and we can use as much of the sun s energy as we want and it will never run out.
6. Solar Energy So far we have been looking at how to reduce CO 2 emissions by cutting down on our use of fossil fuels. Now let s look at getting renewable energy from the sun. Why is it renewable? Well,
Solar energy is available as long as the sun shines, but its intensity depends on weather conditions and geographic
Solar Energy What is Solar Energy? The radiation from the sun gives our planet heat and light. All living things need energy from the sun to survive. More energy from sunlight strikes the earth in one
