1 TRADITIONS IN GIVING Spring 2013 Young Traffic Offenders Program Receives High Honors at Statewide Conference The Research Foundation s program honored with Show-Me Safety award Congratulations to The Research Foundation s Young Traffic Offenders Program, the recipient of the Kansas City Regional Show-Me Safety Award from Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety and AAA. Bestowed this prestigious honor during the Missouri s Blueprint to Save More Lives Conference, The Research Foundation s President Cynthia Randazzo and Director of Development Rose Simone accepted the award on behalf of the Young Traffic Offenders Program. Upon receiving the Regional Show-Me Safety Award, Randazzo said, The Research Foundation is honored to receive this regional award for its Young Traffic Offenders Program. Since 1997, the Young Traffic Offenders Program has successfully educated thousands of young drivers on the importance of safety. During the 6-hour program, participants learn the grave consequences of reckless driving from healthcare professionals, Missouri State Highway Patrol and their fellow peers who have suffered a crash-inflicted brain or spinal cord injury. This sobering first-hand approach serves Now and Then: The Research Foundation Continues to Serve Kansas City Community This spring marks 10 years since The Research Foundation concluded its affiliation with Research Medical Center due to the sale of the hospital to HCA, a for-profit health care company. 3 From R.N. to Nurse Educator, Scholarship Recipient is Committed to Serving Community Scholarship Paves Path to Long Awaited Dream For many, pursuing lifelong dreams can come at a high cost. The financial burden of continuing education almost held Christy Fornal, a wife and mother of two children, back from receiving her MSN in Nursing Education. However, Fornal was able to leap over this financial hurdle with assistance from The Research Foundation, who awarded her with a $5,000 scholarship. This scholarship allowed me to return to school without financially burdening my family, Fornal said. It gave me the means to be a student as well as a wife and mother. Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to finish school as quickly or even have the opportunity to further my education. Working as a Registered Nurse for many years, Fornal always knew she wanted to become a nurse educator as her career aspiration allowed her to live out both of her passions, nursing and teaching. Fornal said, I always knew I wanted to help people. I love nursing and I love teaching. Being able to combine the two to become a Nurse Educator was a dream come true for me. I love my job. Now an Assistant Professor at Kansas City Kansas Community College s Nursing School, Fornal finds joy in giving back to the healthcare community by teaching prospective nurses. Today s nursing students are the future of our nation s healthcare system, Fornal said. Helping them develop their skillsets and providing guidance is an important component in nursing education. As a nurse educator, I am always looking for new innovative methods to teach. The MSN in Nursing Education Christy Fornal, recipient of the Foundation s MSN Scholarship provides up to $5,000 in Nursing Education Scholarship. in monetary funds to individuals seeking a master s degree in Nursing Education. This scholarship, as well as a variety of other scholarships offered by The Research Foundation, is made available by generous donors and through fundraising events. State Farm Insurance Awards ThinkFirst with $15,000 Grant helps program educate area students Last summer, State Farm Insurance provided The Research Foundation with a $15,000 grant for its ThinkFirst program. The grant was awarded to ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City due to the program s long history of demonstrated success among area students and its goal to increase safety while driving. The Research Foundation President Cynthia Randazzo said, ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City is committed to educating area students on the importance of safety. The grant provided by State Farm Insurance assists this program in continuing to promote traffic safety and prevent injury and deaths among youth. In conjunction with receiving this monetary grant, The Research Foundation and ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City participated in State Farm Insurance s Celebrate My Drive event last fall. This event, which brought families with young ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City participated in State Farm Insurance s Celebrate My Drive event last fall. drivers together to vote for their school to receive a $100,000 grant and a chance to win a new car, was another outreach method for ThinkFirst to educate young drivers on the importance of driving safely. 5 ...YTOP Receives Award at Annual Conference continued from page 1 ing Kansas City s young drivers, District Engineer with Missouri Department of Transportation Laurel McKean said, The Research Foundation was most recently awarded with the Show-Me Safety Award for the Kansas City region for their dedication to impacting the lives of our youth. I look forward to working with them in the future to continue the effort of educating youth on the impacts their driving choices make on themselves and others. The Young Traffic Offenders Program is offered to young drivers ages This program aims to change the lives and driving habits of youth by encouraging young drivers to confront the consequences of poor choices while driving a vehicle. Meet Barbara Anne Washington, one of 23 Advisory Directors currently serving The Research Foundation. The Advisory Directors is a volunteer service organization dedicated to the support of The Research Foundation. A lifelong resident of Kansas City, Washington Barbara Anne Washington, a practicing attorney and Advisory Director to The Research Foundation, proudly displays her daughter s artwork at her office. Since then, she s been actively involved in helping The Research Foundation achieve its mission; to strengthen the community and empower people to live healthier, productive lives through our health education and scholarship programs. For Washington, serving as an Advisory Director is another way to give back to the community - a value that was instilled in her at a very young age by both her mother and grandfather. In fact, she still lives by the verse that her grandfather often preached, To whom much is given, much shall be required. She said, I m a person who believes in giving back to the community. When I was growing up, I watched my grandfather and mother give back. I wanted to do the same thing. Growing up in the urban core of Kansas City, Washington always knew she wanted to invest back in the community that helped raise her. I ve seen how The Research Foundation has benefited the urban core of Kansas City with holding events like the annual Block Party and Health Fair, Washington said. Being raised in the innercity, I wanted to help my neighborhood. I found that assisting the Foundation is a way of continuing to help this struggling community. Are you interested in making a difference to the community by serving as an Advisory Director to The Research Foundation? If so, please call the Foundation at (816) Spring

YTOP Transforms Young Driver s Need for Speed Attitude Now he pledges to wear his seatbelt, go the speed limit When police sirens began to sound behind his car, 23-year-old Nick Snider knew he was in trouble. He had been pulled over for speeding - his third driving offense within 18 months. With this latest ticket, his driver s license became indefinitely suspended. For many young drivers this would spell trouble to their social lives, but to Snider this meant much, much more. Employed at a local Harrisonville car dealership, not having a license meant he could lose his full-time job. Seeking advice from his attorney, Snider pled guilty to speeding, paid his ticket and signed up for The Research Foundation s Young Traffic Offenders Program. By successfully completing this class, he could drop two points off his record and get his driver s license back. continued on page 9 6 Spring 2013 During YTOP, Nick Snider talked to Jenny Scheve, healthcare professional and YTOP moderator, on the permanent physiological changes caused by a brain or spinal cord injury.

7 ...10 years later, The Research Foundation Remains Dedicated to Serving Community continued from page 1 solve community problems. Keeping the spirit of the original Foundation founded in 1965, The Research Foundation intends to continue offering needed programs to the community. Over the last decade, The Research Foundation and its programs have touched thousands of lives. The numbers below detail the number of people served through this 10-year span. Harmon Diabetes Center educated 6,442 patients ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City reached 277,359 students 4,938 young drivers have completed Young Traffic Offenders Program 367 undergraduate nursing scholarships have been awarded 2,224 healthcare professionals attended symposiums. TRADITIONS IN GIVING In addition to serving the community, The Research Foundation has received several honors for its programs over the years. Most recently, the Missouri Coalition for Roadway Safety and AAA presented the Young Traffic Offenders Program with the Show-Me Safety Award. In 2011 and 2008, Think- First of Greater Kansas City received a variety of awards including Chapter of the Year by the National ThinkFirst Injury Prevention Program. The success of The Research Foundation is owed in part to its generous donors. Hoeper said, The Research Foundation is able to continue offering programs to the community because of the generosity of our donors. The Foundation remains strong because our supporters believe in our mission. For more information on The Research Foundation, please visit the Foundation s website at The Research Foundation Hosts Hoeper Primary Care Symposium Program made possible through legacy of Dr. Sam Hoeper, Sr. On February 1st, The Research Foundation hosted the Hoeper Primary Care Symposium held at the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel. The 6-hour program was attended by over 90 area physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals who learned from members of the medical community on how to identify and treat various health conditions found in their patients. The Hoeper Primary Care Symposium was made possible through the legacy of Dr. Sam Hoeper, Sr., who established the Hoeper Bixby Fund through The Research Foundation. A family physician in Kansas City for decades and a strong advocate for continuing education, Dr. Hoeper, Sr. established this fund in order to ensure the Kansas City medical community had opportunities to learn from experts in the metropolitan area and across the country on a variety of health-related topics. With Dr. Hoeper, Sr. s passing five years ago, his legacy to assist the healthcare community remains alive today as the Foundation continues to host Hoeper symposiums. His son and Chairman of The Research Dr. Sam Hoeper, Jr., Dr. Diane Harper and Dr. Anne Sly at the 2013 Hoeper Primary Care Symposium. Foundation, Dr. Sam Hoeper, Jr., said, Education was always important to my father as he was a high school teacher and principal before attending medical school. He wanted to ensure that all physicians, nurses and healthcare professionals can stay upto-date on new therapies and interventions for the care of their patients. Spring

8 Gestational Diabetes Diagnosis Brings Mother to Harmon Diabetes Center Education Proves Pivotal in Restoring Health to Mom and Child Gestational Diabetes brought this mother not once but twice to the Foundation s Harmon Diabetes Center. Experiencing symptoms including weakness and fatigue during her first pregnancy nearly four years ago, Jeanie Klinger waived these warning signs off as typical side effects of pregnancy. A visit to the physician during her third trimester proved otherwise with the diagnosis of Gestational Diabetes. Klinger was shocked upon hearing the news. It was a surprise, Klinger said. I never imagined I would get diabetes. After getting diagnosed, I found out that my father s family has a long history of diabetes. After her diagnosis, her physician referred her to Harmon Diabetes Center to receive diabetes education. With the assistance from the Center s staff, Klinger learned how to adequately control her Gestational Diabetes during the remaining weeks of her first pregnancy. During the individualized counseling appointments, staff members at the Center showed her how to read food labels including counting carbohydrates and proper exercise during pregnancy. During my appointment at Harmon Diabetes Center, they taught me how to read food labels, Klinger said. They told me what I needed to watch, not just sugars but carbohydrates and fat content. I found it really helpful in coping with Gestational Diabetes. As a result of proper care and diet control, Klinger s first pregnancy ended with a healthy baby. Now currently pregnant with her second child, Klinger has once again been diagnosed with Gestational Diabetes....They told me what I needed to watch, not just sugars but carbohydrates and fat content. I found it really helpful in coping with Gestational Diabetes. - Jeanie Klinger 8 Spring 2013 Her physican encouraged Klinger to return to Harmon Diabetes Center to get a refresher on diabetes care. Meeting Jeanie, Travis and Ariana Klinger with the Educators the second time reemphasized what I needed help with - especially when it comes to knowing my diet limitations, Klinger said. Now, I eat 6 meals a day and limit myself to 30 grams of carbohydrates per meal. I also test my blood sugar 4 times a day. Klinger hopes with proper care her second child will be born free of complications. She said, When Arianna was born, she was of ideal weight and height. Now in my second pregnancy, I m hoping for the same thing. Harmon Diabetes Center offers group classes and individualized appointments for patients with Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes, Gestational Diabetes and Prediabetes. A program of The Research Foundation, the Center has educated 6,442 patients since October 2004.

Not pictured: Chris Duncan, RN and Dr. Brad Sullivan Are you ready to hit a hole-in-one? Register for The Research Foundation s 24th Annual Research Medical Center Golf Classic on Monday, August 19th at Blue Hills Country Club! Starting at 12:30 p.m., the Golf Classic features an 18-hole, 4-person scramble with a shotgun start. This annual event also includes lunch, cocktail reception, food buffet and awards ceremony. The entry fee for each golfer is $275. Proceeds raised from this event will support The Research Foundation s ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City program, which provides free school-based assemblies to area students in grades K-12. Featuring a brain or spinal cord survivor and healthcare professional, this 45-minute assembly stresses the importance of making safe decisions like wearing your seatbelt, using a bicycle helmet and not diving into shallow water. ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City has reached thousands of area students since it was first established in 1987, ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City Co-Director Rose Simone said. Funds raised from the Annual Golf Classic will provide much needed resources to ThinkFirst. For your steadfast support, thank you in advance for helping the Foundation achieve its goal; to educate as many children and teenagers as possible on the importance of making safe decisions. To register for the Golf Classic, please visit the Foundation s website at or call (816) Young Driver Commits to Safe Driving After Attending YTOP continued from page 6 On the day of the program, Snider s expectations were low as he entered Meeting Room 1 inside Research Medical Center. Like so many young drivers, he felt invincible behind the wheel despite routinely not wearing a seatbelt and possessing a long history of driving infractions. However, sometime throughout the 6-hour program that followed the hospital path of a crash victim as well as learning from healthcare professionals, Missouri State Highway Patrol and two young people who have sustained a brain or spinal cord injury, Snider s nonchalant attitude on obeying traffic laws forever changed. Snider said, Now I know it s important for me to drive safely, not just for my sake - but for my family. I would hate for my family to see me in the ER because I was speeding and got into an accident. Now educated and aware of the dire consequences of not driving safely, Snider has pledged to not speed and wear his seatbelt. I am cruise control 100 percent now, he said. Before YTOP I did not wear my seatbelt, but I will now. Be safe, drive safe and don t act stupid. I have to protect myself. The Research Foundation offers the Young Traffic Offenders Program throughout the year on select Fridays at three Kansas City hospitals including Research Medical Center, Truman Medical Center and Centerpoint Medical Center. 10 Learning to ThinkFirst: Metro Schools React to Assemblies on Safety Provides lifesaving information to community s youth For over 25 years, ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City has educated area youth on the importance of making safe decisions. This 45-minute assembly features both a healthcare professional and brain and spinal cord injury survivors. The topics include promoting seatbelt usage, sports and recreation safety, helmet usage, motor-vehicle safety, water safety and avoiding violence. Reaching nearly 40,000 youth last year in the Greater Kansas City area, ThinkFirst has repeatedly proven to transform the attitudes of students when it comes to safety. Grandview Middle School Teacher David Devaney said, For over a decade, ThinkFirst has visited Grandview Middle School once every school year. While there s no way to quantitatively calculate the benefits from ThinkFirst, I believe this assembly is crucial to teaching our students about the importance of safety. The survivors of brain and spinal cord injuries have especially made a profound impact on them. Thanks to their firsthand testimonials, students have put into action what they learned during the assembly by making smart decisions like wearing a seatbelt. There s no doubt that ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City has made a difference at Grandview Middle School. St. Teresa s Academy Teacher Kathy McCarthy also praised the ongoing efforts by ThinkFirst and said, School assemblies offered by ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City have made a strong impact on our students. From the first visit ThinkFirst made to St. Teresa s many years ago, students have been very receptive to hearing from healthcare professionals and crash victims. I believe hearing these stories makes the students think first and prompts them to make good decisions in the future. Free ThinkFirst assemblies offered to local schools are available due to the generosity of The Research Foundation s patrons and funding provided by Missouri Department of Transportation and Kansas Department of Transportation. During the last academic year, ThinkFirst visited 91 schools and educated 38,976 students. Speakers for ThinkFirst of Greater Kansas City at a school assembly. Jackson, a ThinkFirst Voices for Injury Prevention (VIP) speaker, talks to students about his injury. 10 Spring 2013
