Louisiana is investing hundreds of millions of dollars state-of-the-art transition into four-year schools local workforce development good-paying jobs Louisiana is investing hundreds of millions of dollars into its community and technical colleges, including to align facilities with training needs and expand capacity. These new state-of-the-art, high-tech, multi-use facilities will be used to educate and train over 220,000 Louisiana citizens for good-paying jobs in the 21st century workforce. On average, for each bachelor s or professional degree, most states need three to four people earning technical certificates, technical diplomas and associate degrees in health care, manufacturing and processing, engineering, specialized construction and other fields. 3 What is Dual Enrollment? Dual Enrollment is a pathway that allows high school students to enroll in college courses while still in high school and receive college and high school credits at the same time. The college credits that students earn can be used toward both a high school diploma and a college degree. Courses are taught at the high school by high school faculty certified to teach college courses, online by faculty, at s main campus or at a extension site. For example, a student can graduate from high school with Dual Enrollment credits and use those credits to complete a Technical Competency Area (TCA), Certificate of Technical Studies (CTS), Technical Diploma (TD) or an associate degree. What are some of the benefits of Dual Enrollment? What are the requirements to participate in Dual Enrollment? How many college credits can you earn? Enroll in college courses taught at your high school, online or at Receive instruction from high school teachers who meet technical or community college certification requirements Earn college credits while taking high school courses and apply those credits toward a technical certificate, technical diploma or associate degree Transition from high school to college more easily Lower college expenses by reducing the amount of time spent in college Access college resources and services such as advising, career counseling and mentoring Expedite entry into the workforce (start earning real money sooner) Earn general college education credits that may be accepted at a four-year college or university Meet college entrance requirements by completing developmental coursework prior to high school graduation Each high school determines its minimum participation criteria. Students must meet the admission standards of the college awarding the credit. Admissions standards vary among technical and community colleges. Students participating in Dual Enrollment through : Must be at least 16 years of age Must be currently enrolled in the 11th or 12th grade Must have taken either the PLAN, ACT or SAT assessment with scores on file at the high school Must be in good standing as defined by the high school Must have permission from the high school administration Must have permission from parents/guardian Must meet enrollment criteria Through Dual Enrollment, high school students, on average, earn about 24 credits before graduating.

Therefore, Dual Enrollment students may not be eligible to participate in programs such as Practical Nursing, etc., until they have earned their high school diploma. 5 Where, How & Can I afford it? I saved at least $3,500 in college expenses thanks to Dual Enrollment. By taking welding courses while I was in high school, I finished the Welding Program about six months ahead of schedule. Now, I m working at Union Tank. Courses can be taken at the student s high school if available, online, at s main campus or at a extension site. How do you enroll? High school students seeking Dual Enrollment at s main campus or an extension site must complete a student application with all the necessary signatures. Additional applications may be required depending on the students courses and financial aid requirements. Parental information also may be required, including the parents social security numbers. How much does it cost? The fees for Dual Enrollment are substantially lower than normal tuition. The cost to participate in Dual Enrollment is based on the partnership has with your school district. Students taking courses at s main campus or at an extension site also are required to pay additional fees not covered by tuition (e.g., parking tag, ID card, etc.). Do we have to purchase textbooks? You may or may not be required to purchase textbooks. It will depend upon your program of study. Your cost for textbooks, if any, is based on the partnership has with your school district. Is financial aid available? administration will work with high schools to determine funding sources for Dual Enrollment students. Are any scholarships available? will work with your school district to determine if any scholarship funding is available. Any available funding will be utilized to lower program costs for eligible students.
