2 Letter from CEO David Loewe Dear Animal People, What a great year for the pets we love! In May, Tuxes & Tails raised $5.5 million to support the animals and our capital campaign the most funds raised in event history at Seattle Humane. Then in August we teamed up with local shelters for Catapalooza weekend to find homes for 300 cats and kittens another record! The buzz from Catapalooza led us to yet another major milestone 774 pets adopted into loving families in a single month, in August. Our accomplishments are shared with you our supporters and friends to highlight the life-saving work that s only possible because of animal people! In addition to the success of our events, we ve also launched two new websites, and an advertising campaign to support our building project. Maybe you ve seen our billboards in Seattle? Or the full-page spreads in both Seattle Magazine and Seattle Met? See more, stay updated, and get involved in the capital campaign at animalpeoplecan.org. Looking for ways to support the animals this holiday season? Join us for Santa Paws during the weekend of Dec We ll have a pet-friendly photo studio set up just in time for holiday cards and all proceeds will benefit the animals at Seattle Humane. Don t forget to donate to our annual holiday pet food drive! This drive helps low-income seniors, families in crisis, and AIDS and cancer patients feed their pets, keeping their families together. Look for our red pet food collection barrels at King County Safeway stores beginning Nov. 27, and support our holiday drive to keep these programs going strong for both the people and pets in our community. As Seattle Humane continues to expand our reach, offer more services, and save more lives, we re reminded of the generous animal lovers who make our work possible. 3 Humane Happenings News & Updates 774 Reasons to Celebrate! Thanks to your generous support, our dedicated volunteers and some creative promoting, we found loving homes for 774 pets in August. That s an all-time record for pet adoptions in Seattle Humane s 118-year history! The record-breaking month kicked off with Catapalooza, a cat adoption extravaganza, with waived adoption fees for cats one year and older and reduced fees for kittens resulting in 300 adoptions in one weekend! A winning combination of adoption discounts and support from our animal-loving community made August a smashing success. More Families Completed During Blitz Weekend Seattle Humane s mission is to make companion pets available to all who have the heart to care for them, and that s exactly what we did during our Pet Adoption Blitz, with 249 pets placed in loving homes. Word spread quickly about our fifth annual free adoption weekend and it brought in thousands of pet lovers to our shelter Oct During this amazing matchmaking weekend we found homes for nearly 100 puppies and kittens and over 20 senior pets, including Mister Bigfoot, a handsome 14-yearold cat, and Caroline, a 13-year-old Labrador mix. This successful weekend was filled with love and happy tears from new adoptive parents and staff alike. One of our most touching adoption successes over the weekend was Bart, a 1-year-old Pit Bull Terrier mix, who had been a shelter guest for over 10 months. Bart has Spina Bifida, which requires extra care, attention and a special adopter. His adoptive mom researched Spina Bifida starting in July, when she first learned about Bart and decided to meet this special pup. It was love at first sight and their connection couldn t be denied. Bart met his perfect match, and the two will share many happy years together. Thank you to everyone who came out and made this event a huge success! 4 Animal Advocates A Tribute to Constance Leahy Constance L. Dunham Leahy, also known as Connie, was a dedicated volunteer and donor to Seattle Humane and a lover of animals. When she passed away last October at age 86, the former Issaquah resident bequeathed a portion of her estate to the care of pets at Seattle Humane. Connie helped with a wide variety of community outreach activities at Seattle Humane. For many years she took Seattle Humane pets to visit seniors in nursing centers. She also helped grieving pet owners mourn their lost pets as a volunteer leader with the Pet Loss Support Group. Connie s daughter, Susan, shared that Connie s journals were filled with stories about her beloved dogs and her activities with Seattle Humane. She attended an early Tuxes & Tails gala with a friend, often brought her dogs to the shelter for Santa Paws pet photos, and participated in the annual dog wash run by fellow volunteers. Planned Giving As you think about your estate plans, don t forget the animals. She made her own plans and left a wonderful gift to Seattle Humane to continue her legacy of caring for animals. 5 So you re metropolitan. You navigate crowded crosswalks like a pro and love the convenience of being within a six-block radius of your favorite coffee shop, happy hour spot and the office. The hustle and bustle of the urban masses hold an undeniable appeal for you, and yet something s missing. A certain floppy-eared presence that you long to wind down with after a busy day. A hound dog. Yes, the melodic sounds, soulful eyes, lazy sprawl and goofy antics of your very own hound. Hounds are typically associated with the rural life acres of land to roam and sunny porches on which to sprawl. So is it possible for your urban lifestyle to mesh with that of a dog more commonly found outside of the city? With the proper plan in place, some creativity and dedication, you can peacefully coexist with your hound in the big city. Exercise While physical exercise is critically important for every dog, depending on their age and health, there are other ways to supplement mental stimulation for the curious mind of a hound (or any high-energy breed for that matter!) Hounds are known for their keen sense of smell and it s important to allow them to use this sense to its fullest to keep them content. If you don t have acres to safely roam with them, you can easily set up nosework activities within the walls of your home. A box or puzzle filled with highly-desirable treats (hounds are often very food-motivated!) will utilize their sharp mind and sensitive nose at the same time. Mental stimulation can often wear a dog out as successfully as a long walk or jog. This will also help stave off unwanted boredom behaviors such as chewing or digging. Meet the Neighbors! Get to know your neighbors. Hounds are typically very social animals who do well in a pack (animal and human alike) and are devoted to their people. Socializing your hound regularly is not only beneficial for them, it introduces them to others unfamiliar with the breed and allows your neighbors to know the face behind the bay. All hounds have a beautiful singing voice called a bay that, in apartment settings, is not always welcomed or enjoyed. By making friendly introductions, you may learn that your neighbors secretly love the melodic sound! Laugh it Up Finally, be patient and always keep a sense of humor. Hound dogs can be stubborn, making training something that requires a little extra patience and time. Don t let their stubborn ways fool you, however hounds are incredibly intelligent and sensitive dogs. 6 Veteran Finds Healing I saw a decent amount of combat in Iraq, says Adam Householder, Seattle Humane s Foster Program coordinator, in his characteristic understated way. In 2007, when Householder returned from his tour, he was 22 years old, a new dad, and in search of a job. On top of that, he had just lost his mom. It was six months of feeling lost before he was diagnosed with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He says he felt disconnected and didn t like people hard to imagine given his friendly and helpful reputation at Seattle Humane. I never in my life considered working with dogs...that s when the true healing began. Service dog Ally accompanies Householder on errands. He spent two years foundering owning and selling a coffee business and working with a (VA) Therapist. He also adopted Ally, a Valley Bulldog (Boxer/English Bulldog) puppy, and remembers a poignant turning point. One day, my 6-year-old daughter and I were on the couch with Ally watching an Animal Planet show and she asked why I wasn t working with dogs, Adam said. I never in my life considered working with dogs but I started volunteering at Seattle Humane. That s when the true healing began. At the same time, Householder s therapist suggested he get a service dog to help him deal with anxiety, night terrors and fear of crowds. The therapist agreed that Ally could meet the requirements. Ally who had a unique ability to wake me up when I had night terrors and distract me when I became frustrated was trained to shield Householder in crowds, as well as exhibit good service dog manners in public. Once Ally was a certified PTSD Service Dog, they started going places Householder hadn t been in years. I was able to take my best friend everywhere. Back at Seattle Humane, Householder signed up for dog behavior training and started fostering dogs. I couldn t get my hands on dogs soon enough, he said. After volunteering for a year, he was hired as a behavior specialist. One year later, he became the foster care coordinator where he works to this day. In his new position, Householder hopes to pursue programs that connect vets with dogs. Vets can empathize with a dog that is scared and hiding in the back corner. There is definitely a connection between vets and shelter dogs. In his personal life, he s engaged to be married and says one the greatest gifts of working at Seattle Humane is the 6

7 fact that his daughter is so proud of him. She loves what I do and loves to be part of it. Being your kid s hero is something I never imagined I could be. And Ally? Today, he s less a service dog for Householder and more of an emotional support companion for Tally, an American Staffordshire Terrier with special needs who was recently adopted by Householder. Visiting Pet Friends Program Veterans in health care facilities have the opportunity to interact with volunteers and their certified pets through Seattle Humane s Visiting Pet Friends (VPF) program. I realized pretty quickly he would be a good fit... One VPF volunteer is Abby Wolfe and her cat Roger, a certified therapy animal who was adopted from Seattle Humane in Roger has his own traumatic story, which Wolfe thinks may be the reason why he s so patient and loving in his VPF role. A rescue from a hoarder house with 70 other cats, Roger had a major infection that cost him his eye and most of his teeth. When I got Roger, I realized pretty quickly he d be a good fit for VPF. Not only does he have the temperament and personality, but he has a back story that s fascinating to folks, and it s a way for him to give back for all the care he received. 8 Letters Hi! We adopted a little YorkiePoo from Seattle Humane last July. At that time his name was Parker. He is now Reginald Jeeves Speigel, but you can call him Reggie. He s been with us for about 10 months now, and while he is a handful at times, we love him deeply and he loves us. He goes lots of places with us, and is responding to training. We thought you might like to have an update on Parker and how he is adjusting. Thanks for helping bring him into our lives - he is a very special little creature. ~Reggie s family Hello, Just a quick note to let you and the loving staff at Seattle Humane know that Zeke is settling into his new home beautifully and quickly! He enjoys peering out the windows at squirrels, birds and other creatures. He slept on my bed last night and is curled up next to me now as I ve napped on and off trying to get rid of a cold. Zeke has made fast friends with my daughter and is not phased one bit by her 3-year-old ways - he actually runs around the house with her like a dog and checks on her when she s throwing a fit. ~Christa Brandt 8

9 from Adopters Dear Seattle Humane, We understand that organizing and managing such a huge operation as the animal welfare, rescue, foster care and adoption of hundreds of animals is not an easy feat by any stretch of the imagination, and we appreciate all that you and your staff do. As requested, here are a few pictures of Ginger Snap (now called Lucy) in her new forever home! ~Lucy s family Greetings, We adopted Whiski at about 7 years old from Seattle Humane. When we met her, she had been at the shelter quite awhile, returned once, and in and out of foster care. She was a staff favorite, and I remember how happy everyone was to see us adopt her. We had originally gone in looking at kittens, and with one little sleepy pink-tongued yawn, Whiski had us wanting to meet her instead. She marked both our chins and curled up in my lap, and we knew we had found our cat. She passed away suddenly at age 16 last weekend, and truly, we lost our best friend. She gave us more love and joy than we could have imagined (she was a nurse kitty, a studying companion, a playmate, the inspiration for a young adult novel, and a nanny cat to our son) and she was loved beyond measure. I can t say thank you enough for helping her find her way to us. She has changed all our lives for the better, and even though she s gone now, we will never ever stop loving her. 10 Letters Hello, I m writing to thank you all at Seattle Humane. On the evening of Oct 22, I checked your website. My cat passed away two years ago and, prior to that, my dog five years ago. I m 61 and really felt that my life with pets was over. However, a dear friend coaxed me. Going to your website, I had no idea if I d want a cat or a dog? I just decided to window shop! Well, there he was - Raymond. My heart stopped and I knew I had to adopt this guy. Cut to the chase, Friday (the 23rd) I came to your facility excited, yet nervous at the same time. Would we click? The minute Max brought Raymond out to meet me, I cried. I knew he was the perfect fit and the kind of dog I always imagined in my life and one who would be my own. All my other dogs belonged to my siblings and me and later to my children. I fell in love in an instant. It has now been over three weeks since Raymond came home. A challenge? Yes. But one I think, he and I are both enjoying. This dog is SO smart! He learns quickly and is just so loving. I have a bud for life. Just wanted to share some photos and thank you ALL! My true gratitude is really hard to express. I thought you would like to know that one of your animals is doing well... and is well loved and spoiled. Thank you Seattle Humane. ~Garit Hey there, In May we adopter Gunner, a 10-month-old black Labrador/Australian Shepherd mix. I thought I d update you guys on how he s doing. He s such a sweetheart and he s so much fun to play with. Although he can play rough and be very stubborn, he s learned a lot and is extremely loving. He s a bundle of joy and energy, to say the least! He s grown a lot, too! We didn t think he d grow much more but man... we were wrong. He s very muscular, strong, and built. My family and I love him so much and we re so thankful we got him. He brings a lot of joy to our family and everyone he meets loves him. Thank you for all you guys do and how caring and loving you are to those dogs. They are lucky to be in such an incredible temporary home. ~Gunner s Happy Family 11

12 Happy Tails From Diamond in the Ruff to Shining Star! At Seattle Humane, we give every pet as much time as they need for us to find them a new home, and time was exactly what Morgan, a nearly 2-year-old Shepherd/Hound mix, needed to conquer her fears. Morgan came to us from another shelter after being found as a stray. We didn t know much about her past but soon found that this little one was afraid of the world. Trucks, bikes, hats, beards, doors you name it, it scared her! Seattle Humane s talented behavior team and volunteers knew this was no way to live, and got right to work using positive reinforcement (and lots of treats, too!) to boost Morgan s confidence. Several volunteers affectionately known as Team Morgan worked tirelessly to desensitize her to all the things that brought her fear. For more than a year, Morgan got daily hikes, intentional walks with opportunities to face her fears using positive reinforcement, nights with foster parents, and of course her favorite toys. Team Morgan never gave up and she continued to make great strides in her training, and when the time came for Morgan to hit the adoption floor, she was ready to join a family of her own. In no time, we found Morgan s ideal match. Within the first hour of meeting each other, Morgan and Jacob were inseparable. Morgan is now adjusting to her new life with her new best friend Jacob, who cherishes her companionship. 12

13 Happy Tails Sugar, Spice & Everything Nice Lula quickly became a staff and volunteer favorite at Seattle Humane thanks to her unique purrsonality: she s an independent kitty with a little bit of sass and a lot of love to share. Lula was surrendered when her owner wasn t able to take care of her medical and behavioral needs. In her previous home she was overwhelmed by her environment and shut down. The stress from living with other cats became too much for her, and we knew that she needed to be the lone feline in a family to feel safe. While her stay with us was long, we remained determined to find the perfect home for this special kitty. Lula was able to relax in the comfort of a foster home as we continued to gain knowledge about her condition and provide the proper care. In foster care she also became a super star and received extra exposure by being featured in our Pet Spotlight and in the Busy Lizzie posts on our blog. She harnessed a lot of interest, but due to the fact that Lula needed to be an only pet hindered most adoptive parents. After 464 days of being in our care, we found Lula her match! Nicholas visited Seattle Humane with an open mind and immediately fell in love with this sassy and independent kitty. Lula has blossomed and is now a happy and loving cat in her new home. A mais ing Maisie Maisie is definitely a dog who proves it takes a village, says Jenny Black, dog training and behavior associate at Seattle Humane. Aside from being well into her senior years, the 11-year-old Schnauzer mix had chronic skin allergies and an eye condition when she came to Seattle Humane in December But Maisie had an even bigger obstacle to overcome: she couldn t be touched. After having her medical needs met and spending four months in a loving foster home to help her overcome her fear and touch sensitivity, Maisie was finally ready for adoption. The senior lady had few suitors until one day a couple who had just lost their own Schnauzers came looking for a pup. They didn t want a senior, let alone another dog with existing medical problems, but there was just something about Maisie they couldn t resist. We couldn t be more thrilled or more in love with our little Mai, says mom Melissa. We absolutely adore her and are a maise d at what a great family we make. Maisie is proof that there is someone out there for every dog. It might take a bit longer to find the right match, but when you do, it s a mais ing. Thank you Melissa and Steve for proving that senior dogs make great pets and inspiring others to take a chance on opening their home and hearts to animals who may need a little extra care, but have so much to give in return. 13
