4 Student Mentorship Program Overview Four month program that runs FEB-MAY each Spring Volunteer mentors a mix of government and industry professionals Job Fair company participants volunteer and have early access to student recruits Intended to be the beginning of entre into the profession Technical skills important, but soft skills emphasized (ethics, networking, professionalism, communication, etc) 4
5 Student Mentorship Program Program Goals Teach professional skills and prudent behaviors that increase likelihood for career success in the health informatics and IT domains Develop peer relationships with individuals having similar career ambitions Create a knowledge sharing environment that advances understanding of health informatics and IT opportunities Provide a safe and non-threatening environment for learning and sharing Support the transition from student to HIT/informatics professional 5
6 Student Mentorship Program Eligibility HIMSS NCA members or student members (student membership $30/year) Local graduate students majoring in healthcare informatics and health IT-related degree programs (graduating in 2014) Academic and personal schedules allow for the necessary time commitment to participate in 80% or > meetings/activities Meet all initial program timelines for acceptance to the program 6
7 Sample Spring Schedule Group Meetings 4 group meetings Three are held prior to the monthly HIMSS NCA chapter meetings Attendance is strongly encouraged (mentors and mentees should make at least 3 of the 4 meetings) Possible worksite visits At the discretion of and in coordination with the Mentor Clear objectives to be identified and documented in advance 7
8 First Steps 1) Mentees: Prepare and forward a one paragraph bio (sample will be provided; include Name, School & Program, Work Experience, Interest in health IT and/or health informatics, and something interesting about yourself) Sign mentee pledge and block all program dates on calendar Both due NLT January 27, 2014 (for distribution in advance of 1 st meeting) 2) Mentors: Send a one paragraph bio that includes Name, Position, Short Bio ( speaker bio ) Block all program dates on calendar 3) Program Co-Chairs: Distribute bios to cohort 8
9 Speed Dating Mentor Program Kickoff & Pairing Exercise Review of bios in advance of meeting Get to know you! Mentors and peers participate in a speed dating exercise Start crafting the learning agenda 9
10 Post Kick-Off Key Dates & Activities NLT 10 FEB 14: Students to submit mentor preferences (top five) NLT 14 FEB 14: Mentor/Mentee pair assignments announced Prior to 20 FEB 14 Program Meeting: Hold first 1:1 mentor/mentee meeting and discuss/document goals and objectives for the program NLT 20 FEB 14: Mentees provide copy of goals and objectives, signed by Mentor, to Program Co-Chairs 10

20 Roles & Responsibilities Mentee Be an active participant and an active listener Meet your deadlines Assess your needs and set your own objectives Undertake self-development tasks within a timeframe Show initiative, be assertive about what you want Be willing and able to look inward to identify strengths and weaknesses Be open to your mentor s influence and ideas Understand that the mentor is a busy professional Mentor Be accessible Show initiative Listen actively to the mentee Promote responsible decision making Motivate and support the mentee to achieve their goals 20

22 Lessons Learned Program fills a niche real world experience and issues Set and maintain high expectations (attendance, appearance, advance preparation, due dates, communications, spelling/grammar, professional conduct, networking, work ethic, etc.) Screen and select your mentors with discernment Not all pairs will bond and work well leverage others Feedback to local schools/faculty valued and appreciated Partner with Govt/Industry to cut costs and build the program Not everyone is going to make it (and that is OK) This is time intensive if you are going to do it well 22
